Me and OH were talking last night. He was saying that there's a 'big thing' made about FGM, YET hardly anything about MGM eg surely when baby boys are curcumsized, nothing much ( if anything ) is said. Thoughts?

OP posts:
JamPasty · 30/07/2018 19:19

The amount of damage done is orders of magnitude different. That said, I think male circumcision is wrong too.

PermanentPortakabin · 30/07/2018 19:19

I don’t think ‘nothing much is said’. circumcision is not acceptable to anyone I know, although I know it is acceptable in some communities.

The two are also not (in general) remotely comparable in terms of the after effects and long lasting damage.

LimboLuna · 30/07/2018 19:20

I have heard a bit about mgm actually.
But is your oh aware of what they actually do during fgm? The consequences of it?

Cleaningthefours · 30/07/2018 19:20

There are loads of previous threads on this on MN. It gets very heated.

InspectorIkmen · 30/07/2018 19:20

Agree with Jam. Circumcision does not render the man incapable of either having or enjoying sexual relations. FGM does.
Did you really not know that OP?

Candyflip · 30/07/2018 19:21

Yeah, it’s all about the menz. Can your DH really not see why FGM is such a “big thing”?

IfYouDontImagineNothingHappens · 30/07/2018 19:22

Both are wrong. FGM creates much more damage and long term pain though. I disagree with both and wish both to be illegal unless required for medical circumstances.

VickyEadie · 30/07/2018 19:23

OP, I assume your response to your OH was "And in what ways are you campaigning against MGM, then? If you feel so strongly about it?"

The actuality, as others have already indicated, is that circumcision does not prevent men enjoying full sexual enjoyment at all.

FGM, however, is (a) hideously painful, (b) can result in appalling infection and even death, (c) removes women's capacity for sexual pleasure and (d) makes sex hideously painful, ditto childbirth.

I may have missed some details there...

LonnyVonnyWilsonFrickett · 30/07/2018 19:24

I disagree with both. But the consequences of FGM are far, far worse.

EnthusiasmIsDisturbed · 30/07/2018 19:24

Ask most men who have been circumcised are they in constant pain does it impacts their sex love and vast majority would say no that is why it still practised

For women if for men’s benefit only

AssassinatedBeauty · 30/07/2018 19:24

Circumcision is nearly always frowned upon very strongly on here, so I disagree that nothing is said. Is he aware of what is actually done to girls through FGM and what the long term health implications are?

Seasawride · 30/07/2018 19:26

Both are abhorrent and shouldn’t not be tolerated In any decent society.

That said there is no medical or moral basis for FGM it’s a crime and should be treated as such. Circumcision for religious reasons ditto and abhorrent but may be needed for medial reasons under anaesthetic at a much older age.

I think it’s stupid to pit one disgusting life changing and devestating act of barbarity against another as both should be outlawed in this country and world wide.

It’s disturbing that literally no one is prosecuted in the uk when evidence shows it occurs regularly for both boys and girls

NewYearNewMe18 · 30/07/2018 19:26

There are various forms of FGM, nearly all of which impact on a womans sexual pleasure. MGM does not.

Forms of FGM
There are four main types of FGM:
Type 1 (clitoridectomy) – removing part or all of the clitoris.
Type 2 (excision) – removing part or all of the clitoris and the inner labia (lips that surround the vagina), with or without removal of the labia majora (larger outer lips).
Type 3 (infibulation) – narrowing of the vaginal opening by creating a seal, formed by cutting and repositioning the labia.
Other harmful procedures to the female genitals, including pricking, piercing, cutting, scraping or burning the area.

Illstartexercisingtomorrow · 30/07/2018 19:27

Add to the previous post FGM also often renders a child incapable of passing urine without pain and often takes several minutes to pass a tiny amount.

Plus pre-wedding she then has to go under the knife again to open a random hole hopefully somewhere near the vagina to allow her husband to have sexual pleasure.

FGM is one of the most hideous and disabling practices carried out routinely against women. To compare it to male circumcision diminishes the grave and devastating effects it actually has.

Hoppinggreen · 30/07/2018 19:28

Cutting off any bits of your child or making unnecessary holes in them should be illegal unless it’s advised by a properly qualified medical professional and carried out by one
Parents who do so should be prosecuted

Iggii · 30/07/2018 19:28

Has he seen or read about what fgm actually means, the different types there are? Circumcision for men can go horribly wrong (and the boy did not consent which raises other issues) but 1000s of men lead normal healthy lives when circumcised and have sexual fulfilment. This can't be said for women.

longwayoff · 30/07/2018 19:29

Your husband needs educating. Explain to him exactly what would be done to his precious bits if he were to go through having the tip of his penis removed by someone round the corner who 'does all of them, yes the. Whole village' just for starters. Not comparable although male circumcision is not something I support.

Seasawride · 30/07/2018 19:29

And of course the outcome of FGM is always totally hideous and negative. Tell your OH to do some research.

Oysterbabe · 30/07/2018 19:31

Your husband is an idiot.

Seasawride · 30/07/2018 19:32

If he can bear to u tube the heartbreaking stuff on there on FGM. My main horror was it’s women doing it to other young women. It’s hard to stomach op. Warning

JacquesHammer · 30/07/2018 19:33

He was saying that there's a 'big thing' made about FGM, YET hardly anything about MGM eg surely when baby boys are curcumsized, nothing much ( if anything ) is said. Thoughts?

I think in wider society (other than MN) circumsicion is seen as more "socially acceptable".

That said, MGM comes nowhere near the sheer horror of the practice of FGM and the long-lasting implications of the latter and the two shouldnt be compared.

Both are abhorrent practices.

We had discussions when I was pregnant surrounding the possiblity of having to circumcise for medical reasons if it was a boy and the thought was horrific, I can't imagine choosing to have it done if you didn't have to.

sexnotgender · 30/07/2018 19:33

I’m totally against circumcision of any kind but excuse my language he can fuck off with his whataboutery.

Unless they are lopping the whole shebang off with a rusty razor and no anaesthetic then MGM is in no way comparable to FGM.

SlothSlothSloth · 30/07/2018 19:39

OP, you don’t sound very female.

SlothSlothSloth · 30/07/2018 19:42

If your OH is real, the pair of you are idiots - him for being an obvious sexist with no sense of perspective, and you for thinking posting something this daft and ending with “Thoughts?”, as if his point of view merits discussion, is in any way reasonable.

daisyinatree · 30/07/2018 19:43

WOW, I can't even begin to comprehend how low an intellect someone must have to think MALE circumcision is the same as FEMALE FGM ...
Chop his knob off, (like the top 1-2 inches of his penis,) WITHOUT ANAESTHETIC - and THEN he can say they're the fucking same! Angry

Jesus wept! Hmm

He is probably one of these men who think inserting a tampon is a turn-on for a woman. Hmm And yeah - I HAVE had men suggesting that to me in the past!

@SlothSlothSloth

Hmmm, yeah, something along these lines went through my head too........... Wink
