Me and OH were talking last night. He was saying that there's a 'big thing' made about FGM, YET hardly anything about MGM eg surely when baby boys are curcumsized, nothing much ( if anything ) is said. Thoughts?

OP posts:
lazyminimoo · 30/07/2018 20:19

Both types of circumcision are awful and wrong, I think my muslim friend will do it when she gives borth to her boy soon an it makes me annoyed thinking about it I hope she doesnt tell me anything about it as I will feel like saying something but know i am not meant to I dont even feel like i should be friends with someone who would do that

Seasawride · 30/07/2018 20:19

Why is FGM carried out later? Is it to ‘teach girls a lesson’ any ideas on this? Obviously male circ done st an age boys can’t recall the barbarity?

InspectorIkmen · 30/07/2018 20:21

Oh well what a surprise! OP has decided not to return.

Thoughts?

(I have a few. Wanker is one of them)

@HolyPieter

And of course someone called "dadshere" makes it all about the poor males.

I noticed that too. Typical man. When a woman mentions any problem or pain or suffering women endure, a man has to pipe up with something THEY suffer. And their 'suffering' is always 'worse.' Hmm

Poor iccle menz!

Anyone who thinks - or says - that male circumcision is anywhere NEAR as bad as female FGM, is a clueless pillock who needs to educate themselves, and stop spouting off such utter bollocks.

@Maelstrop

As for FGM, there is no possible reason for it, it’s criminal, done purely to suppress a woman and her ability to have/enjoy sex. Trouble is, having read many victim accounts, youngsters say that they don’t feel like a woman unless they’ve had it done, they feel ashamed etc because it’s so deeply ingrained in their culture that they feel they must have it done or they won’t get married=huge shame to their family. I think there’s an awful long way to go before this horrific practice is eradicated. It’s very underground. We’re told to watch for young girls being taken home to various African countries to see ‘aunties’ etc.

This in spades. It's all about stopping the woman enjoying sex. Some women get very badly infected, and even DIE when they have had FGM performed on them. I don't see these awful people doing stuff like this to men in any of these cultures and religions though. Funnily enough, certain cultures and religions only seem to treat women like garbage, not men.

This shit needs to stop. It's 2018, and it's time women stopped being treated like 3rd class animals.

BiologyIsReal · 30/07/2018 20:24

Both are wrong. However, when there is debate on the web about FGM you hardly ever get more than a few posts in without someone saying "what about male circumcision?"

What I don't understand is why men, rather than dragging male circumcision into a debate about FGM, don't a) start their own debates about male circumcision and b) bloody well do something about it themselves e.g. campaign,instead of forever piggy backing on women's debates and campaigns about FGM.

daisyinatree · 30/07/2018 20:26

@BiologyIsReal

Well said.

Branleuse · 30/07/2018 20:29

people bring it up every single time you talk about FGM

Its not even on the same scale. A foreskin removal whilst still retaining normally functioning genitals is not the same as FGM where a girls genitals are sliced off, sewn up, effectively castrating her and never allowing her to enjoy sex or give birth naturally in most cases.

MrsTerryPratchett · 30/07/2018 20:30

I`ve said this on other threads. I should save it somewhere.

If you only care about male circumcision when someone talks about female genital mutilation...

If you only care about male homelessness in relation to women`s shelters...

If you only raise questions about men`s MH when someone talks about PND...

If you`ve only heard of intersex people because of trans rights...

If you only talk about cultural and religious relativism when someone raises women`s rights...

You are a bigot. You dont really care about those things, you just care about suppressing womens rights. If you cared about any of those things, you`d do something about those things. Not just use them as a stick to beat women with.

Your husband is an ignorant tool. LTB

ShumpaLumpa · 30/07/2018 20:34

Male circumcision is carried out to benefit the child. FGM is carried out to punish the child for being female.

From this Guardian article:

"However, a systematic review of male infant circumcision studies led by Dr Brian Morris, professor emeritus at the University of Sydney, found the benefits of the procedure exceed the associated risks by 200 to one.

The study, published in the World Journal of Clinical Pediatrics, claims that uncircumcised males face an 80% risk of developing a foreskin-related condition requiring medical attention.

By comparison, the risk of an “associated adverse event” from the circumcision procedure – the surgical removal of the foreskin of the penis – is about one in 250, the study claims.

“Over their lifetime more than one in two uncircumcised males will suffer an adverse medical condition caused by their foreskin,” Dr Morris said"

ShumpaLumpa · 30/07/2018 20:36

@MrsTerryPratchet

Well said 👏👏👏

JamPasty · 30/07/2018 20:39

Hmm, where's the OP gone? Can't have been that interested in our thoughts I guess Hmm

Seasawride · 30/07/2018 20:42

Mutilstion of any one for non medical reasons and without their consent is abuse.

Parking that as it’s a given I think I the op and her twat have left the thread.

I hope ohdeardear comes back as she was highlighting recent concerns.

Seasawride · 30/07/2018 20:49

shumpa

Male circumcision is rife in the USA because Medicare and Medicare profit for it. It’s not crept into Australia and Canada.

There are some boys who need it due to tight foreskin most don’t. It’s generaliy an unnessary cultural thing but done young boys don’t remember and generally don’t suffer any long term concequences.

bit it’s still very wrong to mutilate any child for no medical reason without anaesthetic

DadSupportingOrchid · 30/07/2018 20:56

nc for this.

OP - this site may help your OH to understand what FGM (aka FGC) is
orchidproject.org/category/about-fgc/what-is-fgc/

Hopefully this will also make it obvious why it's in a different league from male circumcision. if not, the cutting off 2 inches from the end of the penis analogy is probably a good one.

In order to make it stop it's also worth understanding why it happens.
orchidproject.org/category/about-fgc/why-fgc-happens/

Hopefully these links may be useful for any posters or lurkers who want to do something about it.

In case the username does not make it obvious, I am a (financial) supporter of the above-mentioned organisation. No other affiliation except for having learned what they do and having become convinced that it's worthwhile to support them.

dadshere · 30/07/2018 21:26

Shumpa lumpa:

The authors of the study are members of the Circumcision Academy of Australia.

Althought this thread is about the far more disgusting practice of FGM, in the vast majority of cases, circumcision has no benefits to men in MEDCs. The only proven plus was in a study in sub-saharan africa, where standards of cleanliness are lower.

longwayoff · 30/07/2018 21:27

Seasarwide, I imagine the trauma to a baby from any attempt at fgm would simply kill her. Blood loss, infection, shock and trauma. All of it unimaginably hideous. Oh hurrah for men.

ohdeardeardear · 30/07/2018 21:39

Sorry, I'm back.

On the face of it they appear very doting. Schools were asked to counter sign passports then they became suspicious. Turns out one of the family under investigation has had older children run away. I can't go in to too much detail as it could be outing. Suffice to say, police are involved.

longwayoff · 30/07/2018 21:40

Hurrah for you mrs pratchett you are completely and utterly correct. Well said.

EdithSwanNeck · 30/07/2018 21:54

@Maelstrop

If all of this is correct then I have my facts wrong. I apologise.
