Me and OH were talking last night. He was saying that there's a 'big thing' made about FGM, YET hardly anything about MGM eg surely when baby boys are curcumsized, nothing much ( if anything ) is said. Thoughts?

All you MRA sympathisers who think I'm batshit for being pro-circumcision, I suggest you read this article

Yeah because being against unnecessary mutilation of babies especially because their parent “prefers the look” is being an MRA Confused

ShumpaLumpa · 31/07/2018 09:53

MIC is not cutting off the genitals, it's removing the foreskin. FGM is actual mutulation.

ShumpaLumpa · 31/07/2018 09:53

*mutilation

That's hardly a reason to not be a fan of the country is it?

I'm guessing he's Iranian.

Hoppinggreen · 31/07/2018 10:31

often you, your husband and the doctor should be prosecuted for mutilating your child.
You all disgust me

haribosmarties · 31/07/2018 10:48

Massive derailing. I certainly think circumcision should be banned apart from for medical need... but theres the point, sometimes circumcision can actually benefit someone and has a medical use
FGM completely mutilates women and causes serious lasting damage.

Ive had two exes who were circumcised for medical reasons and both functioned perfectly normally. You would not find that with female victims of FGM... they will at the very least suffer some discomfort and much loss of sensation... and at the most it puts their lives at risk if they fall pregnant or they are rendered completely unable to have pain free sex at all.

People DO campaign about circumcision. The urgency behind the campaign against FGM is completely understandable however as the effects of it are just horrific. Male circumcision is more of a complicated issue as there are many men who have had it done whove had no problems with it and due to their religion would want it done on their sons etc.... and then there are men who are traumatised by it and vehemently against it... its not always had a negative effect however (like I said I personally believe it to be completely morally wrong to alter a child in that permanent way for religious reasons) so the issue obviously has less urgency in the campaign. Its not a bloody competition... women havent stolen attention from the campaign against circumcision in fact I think as mothers many have campaigned against it. Its just that the two things are actually very different... to try and equate them to each other is pretty wrong.

I agree, they don't do procedures on children for no reason in any other circumstance. They don't remove tonsils now unless they are causing terrible problems (which I actually agree with as this procedure can be very dangerous. Why would they carry put this prceedure?

AngelsSins · 31/07/2018 12:25

Oh please, we hear about circumcision every time the topic of FGM is raised. It’s wrong, but not remotely comparable to FGM.

Is this just a feminist troll

daisyinatree · 31/07/2018 16:20

@soubriquet

My DH always thought fgm was terrible but never knew just how bad it was.

He thought it was just the clitoris removed until I told him everything.

Confused

And before you told him 'everything,' he thought FGM was OK, because he believed that it's only the clitoris that is removed? Confused

Would he think it OK to have his bell-end chopped off, so he has no pleasure from sex? Hmm

Words fail me!

LoveInTokyo · 31/07/2018 16:44

I disagree with both.

But circumcised men lead normal lives (and sex lives).

Women who have had FGM (particularly type 3) live with chronic pain and health complications for their entire lives. Type 3 involves stitching the woman up so sex is horrendously painful and she cannot even menstruate properly.

Your OH needs to check himself.

SlothSlothSloth · 31/07/2018 16:55

He thought it was just the clitoris removed until I told him everything

Does your husband not realise that without a clitoris it’s impossible for a woman to have a fulfilling sex life? Or does he just not think it’s all that important for women to have fulfilling sex lives?

Struggling to imagine how anyone other than a total fool or an out-and-out sexist could not think removal of the clitoris was completely appalling.

JAPAB · 31/07/2018 16:57

OP, true people in general might not get as worked up as they ought about male circumsition. But suggesting that they ought to get as worked up as they do about FGM is a bit like suggesting that people ought to have the same reaction to a slap as they would to GBH.

SlothSlothSloth · 31/07/2018 16:58

HolyPieter you shouldn’t be allowed to have kids tbh. It’s not just that you clearly don’t respect their autonomy, you’re also incredibly creepy. “Look and feel”? Grim.

PrivateDoor · 31/07/2018 17:00

FGM does not compare to MGM at all. Women globally die in childbirth due to FGM. The motive of it is to deter women from having/enjoying sex. It causes life changing adaptations to their body that causes unimaginable distress and harm. How on earth is that comparable???

Notthemessiah · 31/07/2018 17:12

HolyPieter - if you'd started off by arguing that there was a health case for circumcision then I might have had some time for you (though I would have argued that it's a decision for my sons when they are old enough, and not for me to make).

Saying though that you would get them circumcised because you prefer the look and feel though? Why would you care how your son's penis looks and feels to another woman (or man)? Really creepy and thoroughly disgusting.

Notthemessiah · 31/07/2018 17:14

As for the OP:

MGM - Bad and should be illegal
FGM - Really, really, really, etc, etc, bad and already is illegal

Other than both involving the genitals, I'm not sure they're really at all comparable though.

Takemetovegas · 31/07/2018 17:19

Google subincidion then say there is no problem with MGM. The practice of physical mutilation for both male and females deserve attention.

Takemetovegas · 31/07/2018 17:19

Typo. Subincision

Soubriquet · 31/07/2018 17:26

@daisyinatree

Did I not say he still thought it was an awful practice and needed to be stopped? Hmm

He just didn't know just but how awful it was

ShumpaLumpa · 31/07/2018 17:27

I don't think HolyPieter is creepy. It's easier to clean circumcised infants and some families do want their baby boys to look like the dad. I.e. circumcised.

Primarily it's carried because it's deemed cleaner. 55% of boys in USA are circumcised so you must think half of the USA is creepy too.
