Me and OH were talking last night. He was saying that there's a 'big thing' made about FGM, YET hardly anything about MGM eg surely when baby boys are curcumsized, nothing much ( if anything ) is said. Thoughts?

Brava mrsTP, very very well said.

dadshere · 30/07/2018 23:33

It is criminal how few convictions there are in this country for FGM, despite ample evidence of it. Some estimates have it that 90% of somali women in this country have undergone FGM to some degree. There needs to be a clear and unambigious message via the courts sent out, that if you subject your daughter to FGM, you will serve a very long prison sentence and lose custody. These girls need protecting.

parklives · 30/07/2018 23:37

I agree, it's disgusting how little the authorities do about this problem, instead they try and blame teacher somehow?

DaisyDreaming · 30/07/2018 23:41

How common is male circumcision in the uk these days (for non medical reasons)? I’m against it but as others said it doesn’t have the devastating effect fgm has.
I don’t understand why it’s done for religious reasons, surely if god was against the foreskin he wouldn’t of invented it

OftenHangry · 30/07/2018 23:48

I will probably get battered here but.
If I have a son, he will be circumcised.
Howewver
I wholeheartedly agree something MUST be done about FGM!
It is a hortible practice causing humiliation and pain for basically no sane reason! Male circumcision does NOT do damage if done properly. While FGM is just what nightmares are made from...
The most distressing thing for me is that it's other women doing it. I just can't comprehend that

Zadig · 30/07/2018 23:54

I was horrified to read that in present-day Egypt, 91% of married women between the ages of 17 and 49 have undergone FGM. 91%!!!! In Egypt!!! I’ve been there 3 times and am ashamed to say I had no idea. They say that if FGM was eradicated in Egypt, that would account for 25% of its eradication worldwide. Over 70% of “operations” are carried out by doctors! Can this be true? Is there anyone Egyptian on here to confirm because I could hardly believe it?

OftenHangry · 30/07/2018 23:58

@Zadig

It's cultural ghing (not religious) anfd it's way too common in that region. It's just so horrible K had no ideaaboyt Egypt stats. Are we sure they are real? I sincerely hope not

OftenHangry · 31/07/2018 00:07

Oh my god. I am so sorry about the spelling there! I have no idea what happened. 😑

DaisyDreaming · 31/07/2018 00:10

Ofengangry- can I ask why you want your baby to be circumcised? Who even does them? A dr? Someone you know? Do they give a local and pain relief?

HolyPieter · 31/07/2018 05:09

I agree, Often.

I've always preferred the appearance and feel of circumcised to uncircumcised, and if I were to ever had a son then he'd definitely be getting the snip.

SpiritedLondon · 31/07/2018 07:07

Errr you would be circumcising your son because you prefer the look of his penis? That sentence is all kind of wrong.

BananaToffo · 31/07/2018 07:12

OftenHangry & HolyPietor

You should be ashamed of yourselves for wanting to mutilate your children. You won't be ashamed, of course, because you're far too fucking thoughtless.

I look forward to the day when people like you are arrested.

BananaToffo · 31/07/2018 07:14

And for those of you saying...."But, but, but....FGM is worse!" So? Murder is worse than assault, so assault is OK?

pinkmagic1 · 31/07/2018 07:36

I have family in Egypt Zadig and sadly it's true.
Despite education programmes and it being illegal there is so much social pressure on women to get their daughters done. There have been a few high profile court cases in recent years where girls have died.
The type of fgm generally practiced is type 1, so removal of the clitiros. The more severe forms are not done, not that this makes it right.

CholloDeNombre · 31/07/2018 07:56

Cutting any healthy baby's genitals is wrong, of course. The casual way MGM is discussed (especially in American circles) is shocking. I didn't know the full extent of FGM until this thread and it makes me rage. Men really do hate us.

Timeisslippingaway · 31/07/2018 08:32

HolyPieter
Why would it matter what you prefer? It's not about you its about the child. So you want to circumcise your son so you will prefer the look and feel of his penis? Do you realise how wrong that is?

As someone else said, I just cannot get my head around the fact that it's women doing this to girls, their mothers don't tell them what's about to happen. There should be very long prison sentences for anyone found having a part in this horrific crime, it's disgusting that so many women are treated like this.

Soubriquet · 31/07/2018 08:37

My Dh always thought fgm was terrible but never knew just how bad it was.

He thought it was just the clitoris removed until I told him everything

Maybe your Dh doesn't know either

OftenHangry · 31/07/2018 08:37

I wouldn't be doing it for the looks...
Mixed religion family. Obviously will be done by a dr in a hospital... Some NHS trusts do them for non medical reasons.
I know hundreds of man with circumcision including my husband and there are no issues.

OftenHangry · 31/07/2018 08:39

You just simply can't compare circumcision with bloody fgm....

JacquesHammer · 31/07/2018 08:40

I've always preferred the appearance and feel of circumcised to uncircumcised, and if I were to ever had a son then he'd definitely be getting the snip

That is the single most batshit comment I’ve read on MN.

What about what your son would prefer. Do you think him potentially losing sensation is ok because “mummy likes a cut one”.

That’s beyond fucked up

Branleuse · 31/07/2018 08:47

Im so glad there is a movement to end FGM in many countries. My extended family member is an fgm survivor and said over her dead body would it ever be done to her dd

@OftenHangry @HolyPieter

Absolutely despicable. Inflicting unnecessary pain and suffering on your child is horrific. You should hang your heads in shame. I have seen so many circumcisions go wrong.

Why should it bother you how your son's penis looks and feels? It's not on your body so why does it affect you?

I literally cannot believe what I've read.

Cheby · 31/07/2018 08:50

I've always preferred the appearance and feel of circumcised to uncircumcised, and if I were to ever had a son then he'd definitely be getting the snip

WTAF, seriously?

That might honestly be the most messed up thing I have ever read. I’m hoping it’s a wind up. So because of you own personal sexual preferences, you think it’s ok to remove parts of another person’s body without their consent, making an irreversible permenant change?

So, so messed up.

OftenHangry · 31/07/2018 08:56

Note I said I wouldn't be doing it for the looks...

@Branleuse That's horrible. Hope she is ok Flowers

HolyPieter · 31/07/2018 09:42

All you MRA sympathisers who think I'm batshit for being pro-circumcision, I suggest you read this article:
