The gin thing is getting out of hand

Bog standard gin plus ordinary tonic, dash of elderflower cordial, ice, slice of cucumber (I am trying to keep on trend). Works for me! I can't be bothered with forty different gins to choose from. They all taste the same after the third one. I'm just trying to economise.

Unless you're in Australia it's 8.30 in the morning - step away from the bottle.

DH and I hobby is to explore the world through the medium of gin.

It's a trend, although not one that looks like it's ending anytime soon.
Just buy or ask for what you want and just ignore the gin menus.

Bit early for me to think about gin but your gin and tonic doesn't sound that bog standard. If you know what you like then ask for that and I'm sure most places can sort it out for you.

Its the fad of the moment in the UK, way to many variations for me. Lots of gin makers popping up all over the shop and some are absolutely dreadful

On a slightly different note, I went to a upmarket department store looking for my preferred brand of cognac, could not get any but was offered other brandy's etc which I was told are being branded as the next big fad in alcohol, the bottles were more like vodka bottles to appeal to the younger market.

Had pink gin the other day. Couldnt for the life of me understand why it didnt taste pink (y'know, like pink berries n shit)

I felt like this as I always liked gin - well before this trend took hold, but then I took the plunge and tries a rhubarb gin - bloody lovely! Don’t get me wrong I still love a bog standard G&T but I’m a convert now.

Well there is gin and there is gin.

That £8 litre bottle of 'basics' gin you get down Sainsbury's is just compound gin, which is just neutral alcohol with a synthetic flavour added. Usually tastes like shit

The £14 bottle of Gordon's or Beefeater is distilled gin, but is made in vast quantities in continuously operating mega stills. There is nothing wrong with it, a bit bland and without character though.

The £25+ gin, usually small batch, hand made in a 1000lt or less copper stills with more emphasis on botanical selection and multistage processes. You can definitely taste the difference

£45+ gin, usually made by some hipster who was making organic pizzas out of a vintage citroen van the previous week. Dont be a mug and save your money.

Not a fan of gin at all and I've tried many different brands, flavours etc., but I still can't find one I like.

I joined a gin club and the first thing they sent was a spiced orange and cranberry gin? WTF? I want gin that tastes of gin not pot pourii. I cancelled my membership.

Hmmm....we do have quite a selection of gin for DH at home.

There are the 'go to' gins, but it is nice to try something a bit different for a change. We tried a gin club for a couple of months so got a lot of different ones to try.

If there is a gin you like then great. There are a lot of bad gins out there (Gordons!) but the good gins have such different 'flavours' even in plain. Sometimes a spicier gin is nice for a change to a more mediterranean gin.

I do second rhubarb gin though - it is really lovely for a change.

I’ve been drinking gin for about 20 years - I’m just grateful to be trendy for once rather than being told it’s an old woman’s drink.

Sharish gin is lovely

It smells like 4711 eau de cologne. Horrible.

Rhubarb gin:

1.5 litre of Sainsbury's London Dry Gin
One pack of rhubarb

Cut rhubarb up
Pour gin into a bowl
Chuck rhubarb in
Cover bowl
Leave for 3 days

Decant back into bottle
Enjoy
try not to drink the whole 1.5 litre in one weekend

Harris Gin is lovely apparently it has seaweed in it. I think there is sorcery involved. It's about £35 but the bottle makes a lovely vase the day after when you come round a bit.

I quite like bulldog. Haven’t tried many really expensive ones, though I’d love to! Gin is one of the few alcohols left I can stomach
