The gin thing is getting out of hand

Bog standard gin plus ordinary tonic, dash of elderflower cordial, ice, slice of cucumber (I am trying to keep on trend). Works for me! I can't be bothered with forty different gins to choose from. They all taste the same after the third one. I'm just trying to economise.

Love gin, even before is became the new big thing. We found a gorgeous one at Winchester Christmas market last year, called Winchester gin. Really really lovely, and that was trying it neat, and I never drink gin neat. I still have a few shots left, so saving it for either this Christmas, or a special day.

I make my gin ths way. Ice in a large glass, about 4 cubes, squeeze over a wedge of lime, a double measure of gin which has been kept in the freezer, then top with full fat tonic water. I occasionally have it with a few slices of cucumber and a sprig of fresh mint, but generally its lime all the way.

I do hope rum isn't the next big thing though, as I love that even more than gin (and can't buy it as I drink it too quickly, esp spiced rum.) Grin

Sainsbury's do Gin and Tonic sorbet with a twist of lime. It's a bit light on the gin and a bit heavy on the lime, but not bad at all.

Seafoodeatit · 19/07/2018 10:25

I love the foxdenton plum gin, tastes so fruity! not keen on most other kinds though and It's the only kind I have in the cupboard. It's just the new prosecco , the fad will go away and be replaced with something else soon enough. I prefer gin with juice, I hate tonic.

MikeUniformMike · 19/07/2018 10:25

I've been drinking gin as long as I have been old enough to drink it, and hate the way I now have to ask for a hi-ball glass. All I want is gin, tonic with ice and a slice in a long straight glass. What do I get, a goldfish bowl with strange bits in it.
I'm perfectly happy with Gordon's or Bombay Sapphire.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 19/07/2018 10:27

Last year at the local food festival it was all things relishes and jams. This year it was 500 ways to flavour alcohol. I'm hoping for a resurgence in cheese.

banivani · 19/07/2018 10:33

I'm a recent convert to gin, only about a year and half. I could drink a LOT of it, so it's lucky I'm a stingy person and alcohol in Sweden is a) expensive and b) not available in supermarkets. Grin I agree that tonics are important though, because if you mix a G&T then the tonic is the larger quantity and takes over. I bought a few smaller brand tonics the other week to try and they were nice. Cherry and rhubarb for example. We're out of gin so I tried vodka but that tastes of nothing so I just drank them on their own with ice in the end.

Gottagetmoving · 19/07/2018 10:37

I drank gin before it was fashionable. I was sneered at but now all my friends drink gin in all flavours. I stick to gain and lime because it's bloody lovely. I have changed from Gordons to Hendricks.

PanGalaticGargleBlaster · 19/07/2018 10:38

Fever tree is too dominant a flavour for me, it overpowers the gin.

I am not a fan of flavoured gins either, its all going a bit alcho-pop for my liking. By some schnapps if you want sweet flavoured spirits.

Gottagetmoving · 19/07/2018 10:38

Gin, not gain!

derekthe1adyhamster · 19/07/2018 10:45

I drank gin all the time as a student. can't even bear the smell of it now

IllHaveALargeGlassOfRed · 19/07/2018 10:50

Opihr Oriental Spiced gin with ginger beer - the best! It's got an aftertaste if coriander and cumin and it's bloody lovely!

diddl · 19/07/2018 10:52

I've also never has gin.

Not sure what's shocking about it?

I'm sure there's some spirits that people who drink gin haven't had!

IllHaveALargeGlassOfRed · 19/07/2018 10:52

@woolythoughts - impressive collection! What's the opaque lime green bottle?

I always judge a gin by its cover!

IllHaveALargeGlassOfRed · 19/07/2018 10:53

Tonic is the work of the devil. Horrible horrible taste!

Todamhottoday · 19/07/2018 11:29

Poetic licence gin is rather nice with grapefruit.

Agree about the hipster gins at a silly cost, rubbish, thats what I meant about distillery's poping up all over.

Just had a rather refreshing Tanqueray 10....

Marthas, was told brandy/cognac was going to be the next 'big thing'

Actually prefer my own home made sloe gin.

GoodFortuneAttendThee · 19/07/2018 13:13

An aviator cocktail..made with violet gin ..is a thing of utter loveliness. "find memories"

GoodFortuneAttendThee · 19/07/2018 13:14

That was obv meant to be "fond memories" ..but after a few cocktails fair enough Grin

3luckystars · 19/07/2018 13:20

My boss told to me that Gin is very quick to produce, start to finish within days instead of months or even years for other spirits.
He said once marketers have latched on to this now, gin companies can spring up overnight because it’s so popular. That’s why it’s being marketed SO much.

I felt annoyed about this and never even tasted it because it was like being told what to drink. I won’t be bullied!

I’d say it will only go away if someone comes up with an even faster production time for a new spirit, it’s all about the money.

Oldraver · 19/07/2018 13:20

BIWI Are you a vicar's wife ?

Best part of the local Open gardens was the rhubarb gin at the vicarage..she was amazed it went down so well and only a couple of quid a glass.

I think peak Gin has been reached..the Gin tasting thingy has gone bust...luckily we hadn't bought tickets

TheGirlOnTheLanding · 19/07/2018 13:21

Love a g&t, and have been working my way through as big a variety as possible - I disagree you can't taste the difference but it isn't always the priciest gin that tastes best (another fan of Lidl's Hortus, especially the spiced variety). Currently like it served with frozen brambles instead of ice cubes - for anyone disappointed with pink gin, give this a try as it gives both the pink colour and flavour. Also happy to drink it with grapefruit - or lime - anything except cucumber, and with any tonic that doesn't use aspartame (again, Lidl do a good Fevertree dupe.) But as with any craze, it'll pass so I'm enjoying the variety while I can!

Oldraver · 19/07/2018 13:21

Oh and to those making their own flavoured gin..

Do not be tempted to make Nettle Gin..it is rank and tastes of mud

MindBodyChocolate · 19/07/2018 13:30

I really hope we've reached Peak Gin. For some reason I find all this "ooooh, I love gin, me" chat on FB or here desperately irritating and try-hard.

TheGirlOnTheLanding · 19/07/2018 13:50

Funny that, @MindBodyChocolate, what I find irritating is people who come onto a thread to sneerily dismiss most of the people on it.

Elphame · 19/07/2018 13:58

Love my G&T.

I could have cried though when Schewppes changed their tonic recipe (yes they have sweeteners in all versions now in the UK).

Luckily there is still Fever Tree

EspressoPatronum · 19/07/2018 14:07

Gunpowder Irish gin is my current fave. Bloody lovely!
