The gin thing is getting out of hand

Bog standard gin plus ordinary tonic, dash of elderflower cordial, ice, slice of cucumber (I am trying to keep on trend). Works for me! I can't be bothered with forty different gins to choose from. They all taste the same after the third one. I'm just trying to economise.

This thread has reminded me that I want to do a tour round the Silent Pool distillery. Or any gin distillery.

seventhgonickname · 19/07/2018 14:14

The only special gin I get is Plymouth gin.Other wise bog standard distilled with lemon and tonic and I do lots of fruity variations and bottle.

MsBagelLady · 19/07/2018 14:15

AAH gin, I liked it before it was fashionable...[my daughter informed me a few weeks ago after we learned that our local village shop has FIFTY varieties!] I don't like it any more.

troodiedoo · 19/07/2018 14:21

Agree OP. Gordon's and Schweppes please. Bombay sapphire for occasional showing off.

Ithinkitsgoingtorain · 19/07/2018 14:22

Ah, so many ideas. Obviously after half a century of legally drinking gin I still have a lot of research to carry out. And I loved the display of gin bottles. Dd belongs to a gin club but won't let me near her stash.

I don't get it. Doesn't too much gin make you cry? I thought that was a well known fact. It certainly happened to me a couple of times in the nineties. I still like a nice G+T but just the one, preferably bog standard flavour, as an aperitif.

WhatsGoingOnEh · 19/07/2018 14:32

I'm glad that gin is popular now. But I'm finding myself annoyed at everyone who's jumping on its recent bandwagon. Where were they during gin's wilderness years? I was the one in the trenches, keeping the drink going!

I also prefer a simple Gordon's, with diet Schweppes, ice and a slice of lemon. I like the bitter taste of a G&T, I don't want poncing rhubarb or elderflower or bits of salad.

InterstellarSleepingElla · 19/07/2018 14:39

After a few sips gin gives me a god awful headache on one side of my head, as does wine. Rum, Baileys, southern comfort seem to be fine. My husband is a real gin lover but not for me!

mariniere · 19/07/2018 14:46

I love gin. We drank a lot of Bombay Sapphire at uni so I have to feel I've moved on! Love the Warner Edwards, flavoured gins, fever tree especially the Mediterranean one. Gordons & Schweppes feels like something out of the mini bar when there is so much choice now. The only one I don't rate is Hendricks and personally I think cucumber is an abomination! Wink

enjoyingscience · 19/07/2018 14:53

Another one who's been long been crusading for gin. I can't bear lots of sweet drinks, so a G&T has always been my go to.

In lots of ways, it's lovely to have more choice now, but also, choice is a pain in the arse and I don't want to have to choose between nineteen gins and twelve tonics and then get a garnish of radish. I want a gin and tonic. (Never slimline, preferably with lime, ideally tanqueray ten.)

granof3 · 19/07/2018 15:32

Currently on a mission finding the best Spanish supermarket gin.
Consum do an amazing Pink one for €6.95 along with a pink tonic. Also a very nice Orange gin for a similar price. Or try Mercadona they do a lovely Strawberry gin for less than €8.
Tried some fabulous combinations in the specialist gin bars. They have menus to select both gin and tonic with fabulous presentation but obviously you pay for the privilege but it’s an excellent way to try the strange and unique!!!
My mission goes onGrin

JellyBears · 19/07/2018 15:44

I’ve heard Sherry is set to make a come back! I love a sherry

granof3 · 19/07/2018 15:54

JellyBears have you tried Nectar by Pedro Ximenez ? It’s my all time favourite to date.
I agree Sherry is very underrated and a massive variety available to try it should be making a come back.

Brakebackcyclebot · 19/07/2018 16:01

Big fan of gin here. My favourites at the moment are Opihr, Chase Pink Grapefruit gin, Copperwave (Australian gin) and Gutsy Monkey Winter gin. Yum yum.

9amTrain · 19/07/2018 16:53

I never liked gin but tried it with tonic water and quite liked it.

I love some of the new flavours and I can hardly bring myself to complain about MORE choice.

9amTrain · 19/07/2018 16:53

I mean I never liked gin as I had only ever been given it as a shot, for example.

BarbaraofSevillle · 19/07/2018 18:32

I've tried to be a gin ponce until I worked out I couldn't really taste the difference between the cheap and expensive gins apart from I try to get the stronger ones because I can't always taste Gordons etc, which is worrying.

I now buy most of my gin based on what is good value at airport shops. Current bargain is a litre of Tanqueray 10 I got in tenerife airport for 25 euro. Our next holiday is likely to be Menorca which means I will get Xoriguer for 12 euro a bottle.

Regarding coloured gin, I was also disappointed the day I discovered Bombay Sapphire wasn't blue but I made up for that when I opened one DP bought me from another airport that was a Canadian brand that was something like Guava (cba to Google) and found that it was the gin not the bottle that was bright yellow.

Lidl Hortus is good and my tonic of choice is Waitrose essential in cans. I don't do Schweppes cos of the sweeteners that make it taste shit.

Racecardriver · 19/07/2018 18:44

Gin is very passe. It was over when they started making it in pink. Vermouth is the thing atm, especially negronis.

BlondeVolvo · 19/07/2018 18:50

Ha my DF keeps saying this and saying and getting very frustrated 🤣. ‘It’s been around since the bloody Victorian times’ ‘what’s wrong with just ice and a slice’ and ‘I’ve been drinking it for 50 odd years’ are some of his favourite rants!! Some of them do taste different, Gin Mare, Ophir and Hendricks are really nice and have a unique taste, but I know what you mean about most them.

It used to be quite a sophisticated drink as well and I do cringe a bit when I see these things for Gin Frozzes on Facebook.

It’s more the varieties of tonic I take issue with, especially Fever Tree (tastes like hair spray - yack!!). No bars just seem to do Britvic or Schweppes anymore and if you don’t use those your Gin just ends up tasting of fancy tonic. I like to be able to taste my booze 🤣!!

BlondeVolvo · 19/07/2018 18:57

Seafoodeatit aw your post reminded me of my lovely passed away maternal Grandad he loved Gin & Juice and made them perfectly, I have literally been drinking that since I was 17 at his house Smile

MsRinky · 19/07/2018 19:10

But a negroni is gin, vermouth and campari, so how do negronis make gin passe?

I'm drinking a delicious red vermouth with tonic and a twist of orange right now. Just had a week in Porto exploring the world of port, and there's so much variety there. There were lots of white port cocktails as well.

DrDiva · 19/07/2018 20:26

Ah thanks, @stephisaur I knew I’d read it somewhere. Not sure of the authority of that one though! On another note, how’s the Seedlip? I’m tempted, but apprehensive that I might not like it, making it a rather expensive mistake at £26 a bottle!

CornishMaid1 · 19/07/2018 20:33

Gin has always been DH's drink of choice. I'm not much of a drinker but the smaller batch ones do have a good taste to them.

Current main bottle is Conker Gin as it was on sale in M&S and that is a nice gin.

My problem is the tonic. I don't particularly like the bitter taste of the quinine. I don't think I need to worry about malaria so would rather skip the tonic for day lemonade which works better with the sweeter and flavoured gins.

Stephisaur · 19/07/2018 21:05

@drdiva I prefer the spice one, but definitely nice :)

Zizzi’s do drinks using the garden one which is where I tried it :)

Chickenbhunaandoice · 19/07/2018 21:17

I have 30 different bottles of gin- probably more by saturday as we are having a party

Harris gin is the best -amazing
