The gin thing is getting out of hand

Bog standard gin plus ordinary tonic, dash of elderflower cordial, ice, slice of cucumber (I am trying to keep on trend). Works for me! I can't be bothered with forty different gins to choose from. They all taste the same after the third one. I'm just trying to economise.

Berkeley Square is my fav, and Monkey 47 is a close second!

But I don't like the rhubarb/flavoured gins, I want my gin to taste of gin!

AdoraBell · 19/07/2018 09:43

Not a gin drinker but I was given a G&T at friends, while we lived abroad. Said friend grew up in South Africa and had brought a gin with him. He put a slice of orange in it. I’ve been trying to find the gin ever since.

But I’m with you OP when things become trendy it can become a maze of crap hiding anything that’s good.

Cutesbabasmummy · 19/07/2018 09:43

What do people mix flavoured gins with?

Davespecifico · 19/07/2018 09:48

Gin is ridiculously cheap to produce. The pallets it’s transported on are probably worth more than the product. So the fashion very much suits the industry.
I agree with Pangactic on what you need to go for. I tend to look at alcohol percentage. Gordon is 37.5k think. You want around 42 plus.
Flavoured gin is blah, but it is interesting to note subtle differences in gins by different producers.

PanGalaticGargleBlaster · 19/07/2018 09:50

Not strictly true, compound gins yes, small batch distilled gins less so.

Rufustheyawningreindeer · 19/07/2018 09:52

I dont really drink gin but im trying my friends ones Grin

I did like the pink gin and lemonade a friend had, in fact so did dh, ds1 and his boyfriend

Gin is just flavoured vodka , thats the most interesting thing ive read about the gin craze

I do have some lovely handpainted gin glasses from Sunny by Sue which are beautiful...i drink wine from them Grin

OverTheHedgeHammy · 19/07/2018 09:54

Silent Pool Gin seems to be the trend around here at the moment - it's everywhere, mainly because of the cool glass you get it in.

Personally I hate gin. Give me a vodka anyday! (although maybe not this early in the morning.... Grin)

GerdaLovesLili · 19/07/2018 09:55

Re-enactors run on gin. That earthenware jug of "water" on the table? Gin. That mug of ale? Gin. The suspicious liquid in the alchemist's flask? Gin. The tiny bottles being handed round the campfire when the mops have gone home? 47 different varieties of gin.

It's been the re-enactor's alchol(hic) beverage of choice (keeps the mosquitoes away) for generations, I"m guessing hipsters mis-identified the beards and thought it was some weird opportunity for money-making.

VulvaOfSteel · 19/07/2018 09:55

yanbu. I know feel like a twat whenever I order a GnT. I mean fuck it. I just want some fucking gin, not to be rolled in rose petals and wated under a Tuscan sun.

VulvaOfSteel · 19/07/2018 09:56

*now

XiCi · 19/07/2018 09:56

Have to disagree OP. I'm really pissed off if I go out to a bar and there is only a couple of choices of gin. All time favourite is Liverpool Gin which is beautifully aromatic, a really distinct taste. Bit expensive at £50 a bottle but I've now happily discovered it at Costco for £30. Also love Monkey 47 and Tanqueray Rangpur. Both really citrussy and lovely summer drinks. I've not heard of aldis Black forest gin so will have a look at that. Lidls Horton Gins are pretty decent.

Youcouldbemysilversprings · 19/07/2018 09:56

Lidl gin is to die for, as us Jawbox Gin, it's a local one here in NI and is smooth as a baby's bum. That parma violet gin is also a fav of mine!

PanGalaticGargleBlaster · 19/07/2018 09:57

VulvaOfSteel

Maybe you should name change to VulvaOfGin?

Galaxymama · 19/07/2018 09:58

It's bloody disgusting stuff.

Sipsmith delivered me a free bottle in world gin day. Never had it before. One sip andni was gagging. Horrible.

MissDollyMix · 19/07/2018 09:59

I think Monkey 47 is overrated. I was so excited to try it because everyone raves about it but I thought it just tasted like normal gin! I did try Slingsby Rhubarb gin the other day which was amazing. I've currently got the Tanqueray Seville Orange gin on the go at home but I wouldn't buy it again. Hendricks is still my all time favourite but I like Gordons too. Agree it has a nice flavour.

Loonoon · 19/07/2018 10:00

As long as the predominant flavour is juniper I’m not too fussy about gin (except Bombay Sapphire which tastes muddy to me) but I am very, very fussy about tonic. I only like no-cal versions, preferably Schweppes and cannot abide Fevertree. Sadly my best mate disagrees and won’t drink Schweppes which sometimes involves a bit of a tour of pubs until we find somewhere that serves both.

nakedscientist · 19/07/2018 10:00

Ohhh Gin, yes now that's a nice drink. I like a looooong gin with lots of ice and proper tonic, not that 'diet' abomination!

I was given this one, at it a delight!

The gin thing is getting out of hand
Rufustheyawningreindeer · 19/07/2018 10:00

overthehedge

Yes my friend has silent pool, and the glass!

nakedscientist · 19/07/2018 10:01

oops! sorry about the angle! Ive not been on it yet, honest!

BillThePony · 19/07/2018 10:02

It's all about the rum now though I thought

TSSDNCOP · 19/07/2018 10:05

I go to a Gin Club. We do blind tastings and sample the Gins neat, with a mixer and as a cocktail.

I thought I was almost Ginned out, then at the last meeting we were given Negronis.

OMG!!!

XiCi · 19/07/2018 10:13

TSSDNCOP They're beautiful aren't they. Already on my 3rd bottle of campari this summer Grin

Hoppinggreen · 19/07/2018 10:16

I actually prefer the tonic so the upside of the new Gin popularity is that there are lots of nice tonic available now.
I sometimes put a bit of Gin in but it’s all about the tonic for me

XiCi · 19/07/2018 10:18

I'm not sure how anyone can think Monkey 47 tastes like bog standard gin as it has a very distinctive citrus taste. I think alot of people make the mistake of drowning the gin with a mixer so the tonic (or, god forbid, lemonade) is the predominant taste. Only a really small amount of tonic is needed.

Glitteryfrog · 19/07/2018 10:19

I've drunk gin since in was a student 15 years ago.
I like this trend much more than the prosecco trend
