The gin thing is getting out of hand

Bog standard gin plus ordinary tonic, dash of elderflower cordial, ice, slice of cucumber (I am trying to keep on trend). Works for me! I can't be bothered with forty different gins to choose from. They all taste the same after the third one. I'm just trying to economise.

Bulk standard gins I rate: Berry Brothers' No3, Aldi (London)

Gibleys has a bit of a kick. Don't bother with pink, just get some bitters. No need to worry about plastic bottles, I have been drinking Gordons out of a plastic bottle (USA) for a week and it was fine. Go for the Italian one and enjoy.

Do get decent tonic. We are great fans of Fevertree naturally light and Schweppes 1783 light.

I moved on from g&t to sipping gin like a whisky. You really can tell the difference that way.

Icanttakemuchmore · 20/07/2018 23:28

Never tried gin.... And no desire to

Gin is good. I likes it. And Pimm's. And sloe gin.

Smudge100 · 21/07/2018 11:01

It‘s the devil‘s brew.

dorisdog · 21/07/2018 12:03

Yep. It was a shock to me (cos I hadn't drunk gin for ages) when I asked for a gin and tonic and the bartender listed about six gins.

But because I'm British I pretended I knew them all, politely picked the middle one and didn't ask the price. Grin

I work in a wine shop and we also sell spirits we do have about 40 types of gin, it’s amazing.
The ones the staff prefer include

Mistral Provence Gin
Warner Edwards - I especially like the Melissa one
Silent Pool
Six o Clock
Wayfinder (Made locally to us)
Cotswold Gin

It is amazing how many gins there are but if you think how many botanicals are out there to flavour the gin it’s endless. Whereas with wine there are probably a lot less different grape varieties and we still sell 800 different wines just in our shop.

The next big thing which i think will grow alongside gin is rum, it’s really taking off.

QuestionableMouse · 21/07/2018 17:41

The word gin has lost all meaning to me after reading this thread.... And I don't even drink!

liverbird10 · 21/07/2018 18:30

I do not understand the obsession with gin. It tastes of soap. Confused

CrispbuttyNo1 · 18/10/2018 20:23

Bumping this to say I’ve just got a bottle of sipsmiths lemon drizzle gin and it is bloody lovely! With fentemans orange tonic.

MarklahMarklah · 18/10/2018 20:25

If anyone is fed up with all the gin, I will happily take it off your hands.Grin

Ithinkitsgoingtorain · 18/10/2018 20:38

Decided to carry out more market research. If there's surplus or nasty stuff I'll send it on.

I was a bit concerned when I bought the lemon drizzle as it says there is a liquorice taste to it, but I honestly can’t taste that at all.

Feilin · 18/10/2018 21:51

Echlinville gin is amazing. Absolute corker of a gin.

Canshopwillshop · 18/10/2018 21:57

Coconut gin is the dogs!

merlotmummy14 · 19/10/2018 12:56

I love a g and t on a Friday night infront of the telly but my family started buying me fancy flavoured gins for birthdays and Christmas - don't know how to tell them I can't taste the difference with most of them meaning theyre wasting their money (except the rhubarb ones which are disgusting). Taste the difference in flavoured tonics though.

Talith · 19/10/2018 14:55

Rum is like cough mixture god help us if that's the next trend.

It's a symptom of our collective increasing abuse of alcohol, in my opinion. Think about it, It used to be a glass of wine at "wine o clock" then the stronger "prosecco time" where you are allowed to neck the whole bottle as the fizz won't keep, and now it's normalising the chugging of spirits with the emphasis on gin being a fun girlie daily tipple . Just wait til they start doing super big gin glasses "for the tonic to fit in" yeah right. We will all be putting away half a bottle a night at this rate no wonder the NHS are worried.

*Hoists bosom
I'm not really judging btw I love all of the above Grin

CookPassBabtridge · 19/10/2018 14:59

I have resisted the gin craze until recently, as I was put off gordons plain gin when younger. But I am really enjoying trying all the different flavours, it's come a long way!

7Days · 19/10/2018 15:20

Doesn't the word 'gin ' sound funny when it's repeated over and over again.
