The gin thing is getting out of hand

Bog standard gin plus ordinary tonic, dash of elderflower cordial, ice, slice of cucumber (I am trying to keep on trend). Works for me! I can't be bothered with forty different gins to choose from. They all taste the same after the third one. I'm just trying to economise.

Doesn't too much gin make you cry? I thought that was a well known fact.

I think that goes back to mother ruin- gin to bring on abortion or that mothers on gin to avoid life hardships.

EspressoPatronum · 19/07/2018 21:40

@Racecardriver I totally don't understand that attitude, if I like something I don't care if it's 'passe'.

Or oh! Where you making a joke?

Mmmm gin. When I was younger, my first underage order was a gin sling. Now I prefer a nice tonic.

Racecardriver · 19/07/2018 21:42

@esspressopatropatronum joke at the expense of the people who started drinking gin after it became in.

DragonNoodleCake · 19/07/2018 21:48

Been drinking gin for about 21 years, love trying new ones. Currently have 29 in the collection 😀 YANBU

Nononononono33 · 19/07/2018 21:50

Malawi gin is fab but sadly not available here unless you want to spend £40 on amazon (£5 a bottle actually in Malawi). Going to try Aldi (I think) strawberry and rhubarb next as it looks very nice. Cannot stand Fever Tree tonics though...

DragonNoodleCake · 19/07/2018 21:52

@PanGalaticGargleBlaster
Love....tanquary 10.

I've just got a tanquary Sevilla - amazing and totally yummy and a tanquary rangpur on my way back from Spain - check them out.

If you are an Eden Mill fan, other fantastic Scottish ones are Castle Gordon and Pickerings

DragonNoodleCake · 19/07/2018 21:54

Sorry @BlondeVolvo I disagree, I hate sweppes tonic, it's vile, tastes sweet and artificial

BIWI · 20/07/2018 09:10

No I'm not a vicar's wife Grin

DH is the one who makes the rhubarb gin, and he throws the rhubarb away after he's made it, but I wonder what it would be like stewed? Might try that next time.

I don't care if gin is in or out, it's always been my preferred choice. Lots of ice, and ideally a low cal tonic, with a slice of lime. Occasionally a slice of pink grapefruit. Occasionally might have ginger ale with rhubarb gin.

Gordons pink gin is an abomination though. Basically gin for people who don't like gin. Overly sweet and artificial-tasting - it's like Robinsons squash.

CrackerCrisp · 20/07/2018 09:27

I don’t like gin so anything that makes it not taste like gin is a winner.

TheDarkPassenger · 20/07/2018 10:25

Defintley don’t taste the same! Gordon’s is vile stuff and I’m almost certain it’s just melted plastic in a bottle. I say that though I like pink gin, it’s definitely not just coloured it has undertones it’s just not flavoured.. we made some strawberry gin and work and ate the strawberries after, yummy.

Ithinkitsgoingtorain · 20/07/2018 10:39

Okay lots of variations in tastes out there. I have a glut of raspberries at the moment. Anyone have any tried and tested recipes for raspberry gin?

OP posts:
TheDarkPassenger · 20/07/2018 10:42

Raspberries in a bottle with gin. Leave for a while, however long you want, about 3/4 days and strain...
You could sweeten it with some sweetener or sugar too cos raspberries tend to be quite tart when they’re soaked, personal taste I prefer tart, others prefer sweet!

TheDarkPassenger · 20/07/2018 10:43

You don’t even have to strain it really, your call. Depends how quickly it’s going to get used!

One of our chefs made pea gin, it was vile but people flipping loved it, sold like hotcakes(?)

babyno5 · 20/07/2018 17:43

Gin has been my drink of choice for over 30 years so the new trendy “ginnies” really get on my tits!!!

pollymere · 20/07/2018 17:48

I don't like gin. Please don't hurt me. The world seems to assume everyone does, it's everywhere at the moment.

flowergrrl77 · 20/07/2018 17:57

OMG I want rhubarb Gin!!

I’ve been drinking some damson gin recently, that’s lovely! But rhubarb? Take my money!! Gin

questionzzz · 20/07/2018 18:05

It is having a moment!

Even in our small city a fancy new artsy "Gin distillery" has opened, and I, who do not have much of a social life, have been twice on various occasions.

I don't mind, though not my drink of choice now, I went through a phase with Bombay Sapphire.

GreatDuckCookery6211 · 20/07/2018 18:08

I've been drinking the stuff for 30 years. Have a G and T most nights, especially in summer. Gordon's for me. Tried so many but none as good as Gordon's.

DontDribbleOnTheCarpet · 20/07/2018 18:12

Harris gin is a thing of beauty. Tanqueray 10 is also very good. Haven't tried the rhubarb gin yet, but keep meaning to.

Planesmistakenforstars · 20/07/2018 18:13

Rum is already the big thing in terms of price hikes and at auctions, but that's for the rare and long aged stuff. Difficult to see how it could be the trendy replacement for gin though, since it's only produced where sugar cane grows and does need some ageing. Unless it's going to be just spiced rum, which is low quality product with sugar and flavourings added.

youwouldthink · 20/07/2018 18:22

Monkey 47. Wedge of pink grapefruit. Fever tree = Heaven

chemenger · 20/07/2018 18:22

I have been to the distillery where they make Tanquery and Tanquery 10. The warehouse where they store the botanicals is the best smelling place I’ve ever been.

BarryTheKestrel · 20/07/2018 18:30

Another who has been drinking Gin for years. I love the availability of new gins now as I was stuck in a Gordon's rut for a very long time. However I now have a rather large collection and am really missing not being able to have it being pregnant. I have already planned my home from the hospital with new baby celebration drink!

A favourite of mine is Bulldog. However it's so easy to drink it's dangerous!

AnnieHawk · 20/07/2018 18:31

Fascinated to know whether your opinion on forty being too many different types of gin holds true for the hundreds of different wines?

Judashascomeintosomemoney · 20/07/2018 18:34

Not sure if anyone has mentioned it yet but, local to me, and purveyor of amazing, and award winning, English wines, Chapel Down do a fabulous gin. Best paired with, the very subtle and non-taste-altering tonic, Double Dutch. Smile
