Supermarkets closing at 2pm Sunday

All football banter jokes aside, does anyone else think it's crazy that some supermarkets in wales and Scotland are closing at 2pm on Sunday if England make it through to the final.
I think it's full pay for their normal working hours for staff.... but it will disrupt the day. And also customers may want to shop after two.

England fans must be so proud and it will be a massive day for them. But for people outside England... not so.

Supermarkets are open til about 9 up here on a Sunday are they really going to lose out of 7 hours trading???

lottiesco · 10/07/2018 17:59

Apparently so! Maybe some stores are 3pm, but the one I work in is 2pm.

2pm! I know Aldi have said 3pm in England only. I personally don't like the situation at all but no doubt I'll be flamed for it.

NewYearNewMe18 · 10/07/2018 18:01

No one is going to starve because the supermarket shut early.

kaytee87 · 10/07/2018 18:01

Which Scottish shops are closing? First I've heard of it.

StoorieHoose · 10/07/2018 18:02

I can only see that ones in England are closing when I have a quick google

BiggerBoat1 · 10/07/2018 18:02

Good for them. Gives their workers a chance to watch. Let's hope it happens and England are in the final. I hope more businesses follow suit.

Eeeeek2 · 10/07/2018 18:02

I'm afraid it's more about potential violence and destruction of property that giving the staff the afternoon off.

StoorieHoose · 10/07/2018 18:03

Closing at 2pm on a Sunday in Scotland isn’t just shutting early - that’s a full 7’hour shift for someone!

PinkHeart5914 · 10/07/2018 18:03

Nobody is going to die without being able to buy a loaf of bread, it’s like people that stock up like crazy becuase at Christmas they close for 1 day.

I reckon most people working for these places are quite happy to go home early even if they don’t like football. Most people have got someone be it a partner, child or family member they wouldn’t mind spending a couple of extra hours with

cardibach · 10/07/2018 18:04

I wont be best pleased. I have zero fucks to give about football but I do like to eat. I’m someon who defends Bank Holiday closing and doesn’t think shops should be open on Boxing Day, but a normal Sunday when most of the population are at work on Monday and might want to get some jobs done seems ridiculous - particularly not even in England!

GazeboLantern · 10/07/2018 18:04

Oh FGS! The whole country grinds to a halt because some overpaid blokes are running around kicking a bag of wind.

speakout · 10/07/2018 18:05

I haven't heard that about Scotland.

All major supermarkets will be open 24/7 as usual.

StoorieHoose · 10/07/2018 18:06

Did you read the op? They are talking about 2 countries who aren’t in the World Cup closing stores because of England being in the final

I cannae see wee Jean who has a Sunday afternoon shift in Carluke Tesco being too chuffed about losing 7 hours wages

maxthemartian · 10/07/2018 18:07

In Scotland? Why on earth would they do that?

The whole point of Scotland is that the supermarkets don't bang their sodding doors shut at 4pm on a Sunday.

lynmilne65 · 10/07/2018 18:07

There was a time when nothing was open on a Sunday!!!

eightfacesofthemoon · 10/07/2018 18:08

No one is going to close
Because we won’t be in the final

Hph

StoorieHoose · 10/07/2018 18:08

I can’t find anything about stores closing in Scotland - where did you get your info OP?

specialsubject · 10/07/2018 18:08

they close at 4pm on Sunday anyway.

but yes, if England do get through shutters will be a good idea. we have a substantial minority of thugs who will seize a perceived excuse.

eightfacesofthemoon · 10/07/2018 18:08

HTH!!!!!!

TheHobbitMum · 10/07/2018 18:08

Really? Can't people just shop earlier? No one will starve because a few shops are being decent and giving us staff the opertunity to watch the match (or anything they want to do with their afternoon). It's for one day and potentially a couple of hours of shopping time lost Hmm

LeighaJ · 10/07/2018 18:10

Shop on a different day or earlier in the day. Hmm

Nuffaluff · 10/07/2018 18:11

I think that’s great.

liverbird10 · 10/07/2018 18:12

I don't think it's crazy at all. We retail workers have lives too. Get yer shopping in advance like everyone else will, and quit moaning! Grin

Frouby · 10/07/2018 18:13

It's probably because most of the shops were empty when the matches have been on. It costs a fortune to keep a supermarket open. Not just staff but energy etc.

It's probably a financial decision dressed up as an altruistic one.

Would mumsnet be as sneery if it wasn't football? Athletics or rugby or cricket? Love it or loathe it football is immensely popular and it it has been an awful long time since England got to a semi final. It is nice to have something to celebrate for once.
