Supermarkets closing at 2pm Sunday

All football banter jokes aside, does anyone else think it's crazy that some supermarkets in wales and Scotland are closing at 2pm on Sunday if England make it through to the final.
I think it's full pay for their normal working hours for staff.... but it will disrupt the day. And also customers may want to shop after two.

England fans must be so proud and it will be a massive day for them. But for people outside England... not so.

We're not even in the final , yet. It may not be a problem.

ADastardlyThing · 10/07/2018 18:54

And actually, it's quite a shrewd move I think? A supermarket closing early on one of the busiest days is a pretty big thing, if I wasn't too cynical I'd probably think "shit, even the shops are closing early for this" and wonder if I should splash out a bit more on some food/drink if it's that special. I go earlier (because that's no big deal), spend a bit more, their staff get an early finish, good for pr for the non-misers..........

OftenHangry · 10/07/2018 18:54

*UK wide

Redglitter · 10/07/2018 18:54

If shops in Scotland and Wales are open 24. Hours a day that’s ridiculous anyway. Most of the supermarkets in the UK stopped doing that because of lack of trade

It's great I love doing my shopping at stupid o'clock. It actually makes sense. There's loads of staff working overnight shelf filling etc so if there's staff there any way why not let customers in. My local stores normally just have one or maybe 3 checkouts open and encourage people to use self service.
It's amazing how many people are in the shops at night/early hours of the morning

ginandtonicformeplease · 10/07/2018 18:54

I waited until 3pm on Saturday to go to the supermarket, thinking it would be empty - it was packed! Obviously everyone had had the same idea. I'm capable of planning ahead - so long as staff are paid for their full hours then does it make a difference really? It's the supermarkets that'll lose money.

Fluffyears · 10/07/2018 18:55

It’s not just an hour in Scotland. We don’t have a weird closing at 4 rule. Our shops are open as normal and supermarkets are still open till 10 or even 24 hours, therefore a lot of workers might lose a full shift for a game played by another country.

StoorieHoose · 10/07/2018 18:57

If they do close at 2 it’s not just an hour early ffs. In Scotland Aldi is open to 9pm on a sunday

And England can keep their crappy Sunday trading laws. I love a Sunday tea time shop when it’s quiet

Sitranced · 10/07/2018 18:58

No need to panic, they'll lose in the semis.

SummerGems · 10/07/2018 18:58

It’s ridiculous because it enforces this idea that we should be able to shop for what we want, when we want, which is why so many shop workers and those who work in customer facing roles have become un-entitled to family time when everyone else is sitting down with their families. And it has undoubtedly led to the increased amount of abuse directed at people in customer facing industries when they tell a customer that no, the shop will be closed on Christmas day or whatever.

The thing is that a lot of english live in Scotland and Wales. If england make it to the final it will have an impact on trading anyway. And many of those working in the shops will be English and will likely want to watch the game.

TattyCat · 10/07/2018 18:58

Bah humbug. You know, I do believe that if Wales or Scotland were playing, we'd be happy for them, behind them and supporting them. All I see where I live is people actually angry that England have got so far and determined to support the opposing team. I'm on the Welsh border...

It's really sad.

StoorieHoose · 10/07/2018 18:58

And being able to do your weekly shop at 6am with a toddler who likes to wake at 4.30am does help break the day up a bit

ThroughThickAndThin01 · 10/07/2018 19:00

Yanbu, the team is playing as England not the U.K., no need for Scotland Wales and Northern Ireland to shut up shop.

I’d be less than impressed if England closed if any of the above country’s were involved.

StoorieHoose · 10/07/2018 19:01

You would maybe be happy if The Miracle happened and Scotland were on the final but I’m damn sure no supermarkets in England would
Be closing

mulberrybag · 10/07/2018 19:03

I can't abide football but I've become so sick with the 24hours open all hours mentality that we have in the UK that I actually applaud this type of thing.
I only wish we could go back to all shops being shut after Christmas Eve and the sales starting on the first of January like in the old days. Let people spend time instead of money!
I genuinely hate this obsession we have as a nation that we can't survive without shops being open all hours. It's so bloody refreshing to be abroad and told that everywhere is closed on a Sunday or a week day afternoon - love it!
Aghhhh rant over 😬

lottiesco · 10/07/2018 19:07

There is absolutely no way shops in England would be closed if it was wales or Scotland in the final.
Also to the people saying that the English would be backing Scotland and Wales if they did well in a tournament. This is largely not true for actual football fans 😂😂. And anyway this isn't about football banter.

OP posts:
Typhers · 10/07/2018 19:08

I think it’s utter crap as well, they should be shut ‘every’ Sunday and bank holiday.

whatsmynametoday · 10/07/2018 19:13

All you need to do is look at Aldi's post about closing at 3 on Sunday and see how many people are complaining it only applies to shops in England and not in Wales and Scotland. For all the employees complaining that it's not their country there would be just the same amount complaining if it only applied to stores in England. The retailers can't win.

lottiesco · 10/07/2018 19:14

Whatsmynametoday- that could be an issue I guess

Pengggwn · 10/07/2018 19:15

What a human gesture. Cool.

HelenaDove · 10/07/2018 19:15

if they can afford to do this then they can also afford to shut on Boxing Day to give workers more family time at Christmas.

SquirmOfEels · 10/07/2018 19:18

Supermarkets won't have done this on a whim.

It'll all be based on expected volume if sales, plus wishes of staff (as far as they have ascertained them). In all home nations and regions.

Half a day buckshee leave sounds rather nice to me.

And I don't see why a few shops shutting early is going to cause starvation, panic or economic collapse.

I think some people don't like it simply because as they don't like football they think no-one else shouid get with the celebrations. I don't like footie, but I love the mood of the nation right now.

(Awaits posts about the underbelly. Yes, I agree, the ugly side needs suppressing, but not at the cost of joysucking for the happy millions)

Jimdandy · 10/07/2018 19:18

Shut up cats bum mouths! It’s one day! Embrace the feeling!!! Grin

Batmanwearspants · 10/07/2018 19:19

they'll still get paid the hours they are contacted for

StoorieHoose · 10/07/2018 19:20

The replies on twitter about doing it in Scotland Wales too will be from some of those basty UK citizen who want to see England get humped!

RunMummyRun68 · 10/07/2018 19:23

We are using the premise that we won't get our colleagues 'calling in sick' if we embrace the football and let them watch
