Supermarkets closing at 2pm Sunday

All football banter jokes aside, does anyone else think it's crazy that some supermarkets in wales and Scotland are closing at 2pm on Sunday if England make it through to the final.
I think it's full pay for their normal working hours for staff.... but it will disrupt the day. And also customers may want to shop after two.

England fans must be so proud and it will be a massive day for them. But for people outside England... not so.

Good point Helena Smile

Fairynormal · 10/07/2018 19:25

Good for them! It is a nice gesture, but I am presuming that this will only happen IF we get through to the final. I am not a huge football fan, but it would be nice for those who are fans to ba able to have an hour or so off so they can watch the final, I think I must be a dinosaur because I can remember Sunday’s when no stores were open, apart from the newsagent, and possibly the corner shop for a couple of hoursShock so think it is no big deal for the stores to close an hour or two early

KneesupGaston · 10/07/2018 19:26

' it’s like people that stock up like crazy becuase at Christmas they close for 1 day. '

Sorry but YABVU for this comment. People stock up at Christmas because they have family and friends visiting, because they are making a massive feast and because they don't WANT to spend the special festive period in bloody Sainsbury's when they could be at home with their loved ones.

WigglyBlossom · 10/07/2018 19:29

My relative who lives in the very far north of Scotland went to the local supermarket on our last match and it was completely dead, so I assume there are at least a few Scottish people watching, if only to see us get beat win the World Cup.

TantricTwist · 10/07/2018 19:32

What a good idea and lovely gesture towards their staff is all I can say

chocolateworshipper · 10/07/2018 19:32

I waited until 3pm on Saturday to go to the supermarket, thinking it would be empty - it was packed! Obviously everyone had had the same idea.
Same! I was shocked at just how many people there were.

There is absolutely no way shops in England would be closed if it was wales or Scotland in the final.
I think that is a very fair point and think you are right.

I didn't read the OP properly first time and amazed myself (as a non-football fan) by thinking that it was good that some supermarkets in England are shutting early if they feel a lot of their staff want to watch the football (assuming they are being paid). However, I do think the OP has a point that English supermarkets wouldn't close early if Wales or Scotland were in the final.

Parliament has to consider whether to talk about about Monday being bank holiday if England wins😂 The petition went crazy. I love it!

diddl · 10/07/2018 19:34

"People didn't starve to death in the 'olden days' when shops weren't open AT ALL on Sundays."

Shops here don't open on Sunday & some small shops still close at lunch on a Weds.

Anyone else remember that in England?

bookmum08 · 10/07/2018 19:35

When it was the Olympics retailers in London actually got special permission to open for longer than the normal 6 hours on a Sunday. I too like the atmosphere for events like the World Cup (when everyone behaves) but why is the World Cup more important than other national popular events. Lots of events make the country and people feel good and jolly not just this one.

Metoodear · 10/07/2018 19:36

My son works in Pizza Hut their were 2 families in the whole shift last week they ended up closing early
Pissing off the staff they got in because they wanted to watch the match
Still having to pay everyone they made £50 and had to still pay 8 staff and
Loads of people are already trying to book Sunday off loads of rows ect would have been better to just close early

Tesco was dead my area was like a ghost town my sister who is a nurse said even a&e was dead 💀

CherryPavlova · 10/07/2018 19:44

I’d have most shops shut all day Sunday every week to reduce constant hedonistic commercialism.

JessicaJonesJacket · 10/07/2018 19:45

Well OP I'm glad you posted because I wouldn't have thought for a second that our supermarket would be closed because England were playing a football match.

Wellthisunexpected · 10/07/2018 19:51

I think it fantastic. Real community spirit.

starzig · 10/07/2018 19:54

The polish and Asian supermarkets will still be open, taking full advantage of non-english that still have to nip to the shops after work.

ChikiTIKI · 10/07/2018 20:04

The supermarkets are making so much extra money from the World Cup. Selling millions worth of extra food and drink. They won't be expecting much trade during or after the match.

Don't see why people are so upset about it. They can close the shops whenever they like.

I don't even think supermarkets should be open on Sundays.

ChikiTIKI · 10/07/2018 20:06

I agree about the hospital thing too. Nobody goes to A&E during the matches! Waiting area empty.

ChikiTIKI · 10/07/2018 20:10

Starzig- you don't have to be "non-English" to use a Polish or Asian supermarket...

PurpleFlower1983 · 10/07/2018 20:13

2 hours won’t kill anyone!

starzig · 10/07/2018 20:17

Really chiki. I sooo didn't know that. Might go in sometime in that case.

ChikiTIKI · 10/07/2018 22:08

Glad I could assist you. Variety is the spice of life. Enjoy!

speakout · 10/07/2018 22:15

In Scotland it wouldn't be 2 lost trading hours. It would be 10 hours if the shops closed at 2pm.

2rebecca · 10/07/2018 22:15

As long as people know in advance that's fine. I think supermarkets are open too long. There's more to life than shopping.

BridgeFarmKefir · 10/07/2018 22:32

My brother works in a supermarket. It was absolutely dead last Saturday during the game. He and his colleagues work hard for minimum wage - good for them if they get a few hours off.

As others have noted, no one is going to die if the shops shut a bit early. (Though you'd think it if you've ever been in a supermarket on Christmas Eve Hmm)

Ps. I couldn't give two shiny shits about the football but whatever, it's nice lots of problem have something to enjoy together.

TheGreatCornholio · 10/07/2018 22:46

"The thing is that a lot of english live in Scotland and Wales. If england make it to the final it will have an impact on trading anyway. And many of those working in the shops will be English and will likely want to watch the game."

Hmm
