Supermarkets closing at 2pm Sunday

All football banter jokes aside, does anyone else think it's crazy that some supermarkets in wales and Scotland are closing at 2pm on Sunday if England make it through to the final.
I think it's full pay for their normal working hours for staff.... but it will disrupt the day. And also customers may want to shop after two.

England fans must be so proud and it will be a massive day for them. But for people outside England... not so.

The supermarkets round here are open 24/7 it'll be business as usual

lottiesco · 10/07/2018 18:14

It's great... but for England!

Why does anything have to change in wales and Scotland, that's the point I'm trying to make.

Liverbird- I work in retail 😂

And I also LOVE football

It won't happen in Scotland.

I can guarantee it.

Shops would make themselves very unpopular to be seen bending over this way.

Mousefunky · 10/07/2018 18:16

Will see what happens tomorrow night. England have done really well this year and I’m happy for them but Croatia are definitely the toughest team they have faced to date. Well, Belgium were tough too and England lost so... hold your horses and see how tomorrow night goes before this becomes a concern.

HunterHearstHelmsley · 10/07/2018 18:18

I'm sure people can organise themselves and go earlier or get an extra pint of milk on Saturday.

liverbird10 · 10/07/2018 18:18

Also, if England miraculously make it to the final, a fair proportion of my staff will undoubtedly be struck down with some mysterious illness that means they can't work. Same for other retailers, I suspect. Not worth the cost of staying open when there are no customers and a skeleton crew of team members.

liverbird10 · 10/07/2018 18:20

@Lottiesco Then you should be campaigning for THE ENTIRE DAY off! Grin

lottiesco · 10/07/2018 18:20

Hunter- of course people can. But why would they want to? And why should they need to. Fair enough if it was in England. You know, with England fans. But it's not.

Bibesia · 10/07/2018 18:22

They probably reckon there's not much point in opening when they may only have a smattering of customers.

lottiesco · 10/07/2018 18:23

I wouldn't have thought the number of customers would change that much in wales or Scotland.

Surprised that the Welsh are closing their supermarkets early considering how much they bang on and on and on about hating the English.

Janleverton · 10/07/2018 18:27

Oh for goodness sake. I think it’s crazy for shops to shut in England, let alone wales and Scotland. All this stuff about it being an historic event. If you’re a football fan, maybe. But Loads of people aren’t. I’ll be really pleased if they win, and am impressed by the team and Gareth Southgate, but that’s that. No need for the country to shut down.

ApolloandDaphne · 10/07/2018 18:27

Having done a quick Google all i can see is that Aldi and Lidl are shutting their English stores 1 hour earlier on Sunday at 3pm. Nothing about any other stores or anywhere else in the UK.

Dodie66 · 10/07/2018 18:28

It’s also men’s final day at Wimbledon if you don’t like football🙂

CrochetBelle · 10/07/2018 18:28

Really? Which ones?

VictorianPrint · 10/07/2018 18:28

GazeboLantern, how very well said.

FlyingElbows · 10/07/2018 18:29

In Scotland? Aye, so they will!

We can still manage to work, shop and celebrate England losing all at the same time! GrinWink

VictorianPrint · 10/07/2018 18:29

I am planning to go to Ikea if there is a big football match on this week, in the hope that I will be their only customer. Normally avoid it.

Undercoverbanana · 10/07/2018 18:30

Are they paying them for their hours though?

CammieKennaway · 10/07/2018 18:30

A lot of places here are closing early tomorrow and on Sunday if England get through and I don't really see the problem - retail workers will probably be really grateful for the extra break and as for people wanting to shop after that time - well you can always go to the shop the day before or earlier. In fact, I'm pretty jealous my workplace isn't closing early as I'd love some extra time to myself.
Got to admit I was shocked to get home from work today to receive a phonecall from the vet regarding our dog's pre-booked appointment to have stitches from major surgery removed tomorrow. They told me that they have to cancel because they're closing the surgery early tomorrow for the football!!
Luckily, we managed to get her in this afternoon but only thanks to me getting home early - but closing a vet's surgery for the sake of a football game is a bit much.

ScreamingValenta · 10/07/2018 18:31

I'm not following the football, but I don't see this as an issue. If I worked somewhere that was doing this, I'd just be glad to have two hours' holiday to do whatever I liked with.

Tjzmummabear · 10/07/2018 18:31

I think it's 2 avoid violence & theft. Meh

TattyCat · 10/07/2018 18:32

I'm sick to the back teeth of reading how awful it is that England are through and may win tomorrow and Sunday. I'm extremely happy that something is going well for once and I'm not particularly a football fan.

And I'm pleased to hear that businesses are taking the decision to close, regardless of the reason. They're recognising that most of their staff will want to watch this once in a decade (possibly) win!!

Of course I hate the hooliganism from the minority of fuckwits but the vast majority of people are intelligent human beings taking delight in their own country doing well for a change! What's so wrong with that?
