Supermarkets closing at 2pm Sunday

All football banter jokes aside, does anyone else think it's crazy that some supermarkets in wales and Scotland are closing at 2pm on Sunday if England make it through to the final.
I think it's full pay for their normal working hours for staff.... but it will disrupt the day. And also customers may want to shop after two.

England fans must be so proud and it will be a massive day for them. But for people outside England... not so.

So far just Aldi and Lidl doing it. I think as long as it gets advertised enough so people are aware it’ll be minimal impact if others follow suit. Bear in mind there are early closures at bank holidays sometimes and people don’t struggle then.

I get that not everyone is into football but it’s the first time in 28 years that England have reached the semis and if they make the final it’s the first time in 58 so think it’s fair to assume a large part of the staff working in them (me included) wouldn’t want to miss out on watching it

Jaxhog · 10/07/2018 18:34

Relax, It's only Aldi and Lidl.

TattyCat · 10/07/2018 18:35

*century, not decade!!!

lottiesco · 10/07/2018 18:36

Tatty cat- their OWN country. England is not my country. Why should people in my store have to rush their daily tasks to shut the store earlier, for another countries football team.

As a massive football fan I find it ridiculous.
I have English friends, and they are understandably thrilled about how far England has managed to get, but disrupting other countries. Crazy.

As I said on the other thread it's just daft. Not everyone will be watching football, not everyone is interested, not everyone cares. Also supermarkets sell more than food so is not about not being able to buy a pint of milk. It just seems very daft that retailers are turning down a chance to sell 1000s and 1000s of £s worth of goods because of a sporting event. That's their point in life - to sell things. It is just a really daft thing from a business point of view.

CtrlCandCtrlV · 10/07/2018 18:37

Most of the supermarkets around here employ either kids (who need a manager to put alcohol through) or mothers who can't afford childcare.
Some people really need to work on Sundays.

If the shops want to close early, they can, but it's a bit shit with so little warning. Plenty people work shifts or have good reasons for only shopping on Sunday afternoons. Yes, they would have to manage if it was WW3 or the shops were never open on Sundays, but as they are, they organise themselves around the existing opening hours!

It's only a football match, the level of hysteria is ridiculous.

No one is wishing for it, but realistically it will happen: for how many days will shops and businesses close the day we lose Prince Philip and the Queen?

lottiesco · 10/07/2018 18:37

It's not only Aldi and Lidl. And like I said, some people won't be able to relax, as they will have to rush their tasks.

WHERE HAS IT BEEN CONFIRMED THAT SUPERMARKETS IN SCOTLAND ARE POSSIBLY CLOSING EARLY ON SUNDAY??

lottiesco · 10/07/2018 18:42

We've had a letter from head office saying that all uk close (in our company) are closing at 2pm Sunday. Apparently it's a 'once in a life time event'.... and that's why we are closing early.

It's not... it's a once in four years event for our store.

Zaphodsotherhead · 10/07/2018 18:43

People didn't starve to death in the 'olden days' when shops weren't open AT ALL on Sundays.

People just need to be more organised. Really and truly, do you NEED to be able to shop seven days a week?

SummerGems · 10/07/2018 18:43

There was a time not so long ago when shops didn’t open at all on a Sunday. While announcing Sunday closures before England are in the final is IMO a bit premature as people will be pre-emptively looking forward to their day off and may then need to come back down to earth, this idea that people need to shop on a Sunday is ridiculous. If you know the supermarkets are going to be shut then you go earlier. Quite simple really.

People managed to shop before Sunday trading, the shops not being open really is a first world problem.

And afaik staff are going to be paid anyway if the shops are closed?

If shops in Scotland and Wales are open 24. Hours a day that’s ridiculous anyway. Most of the supermarkets in the UK stopped doing that because of lack of trade.

FleshLiabilities · 10/07/2018 18:45

lottiesco, which supermarkets are closing early in Scotland?

speakout · 10/07/2018 18:45

If shops in Scotland and Wales are open 24. Hours a day that’s ridiculous anyway.

Ridiculous to whom?

It works well in Scotland.
People have more choice, more employment opportunities for students or those with young children.

I think it is ridiculous to still have restrictive Sunday trading laws which were church imposed in the first place.

RedPanda2 · 10/07/2018 18:46

I agree with the PP about the violence and property destruction. It's about time supermarkets started giving a fuck about their staff

TattyCat · 10/07/2018 18:47

lottiesco but surely you're missing the point? It's the WORLD CUP and as part of Great Britain and our closest neighbours then the majority of people will want to watch it. I don't believe for one minute that supermarkets will be making a fortune during the match so they've made the decision to close early so that those who DO want to watch it, can.

I think it's a nice gesture, actually. It's a couple of hours early and if folk genuinely have a massive problem because of that then we, as a society, potentially have much bigger problems.

ADastardlyThing · 10/07/2018 18:48

Ah don't be a miser! Not everyone from Wales and Scotland hate the English.

Lucyccfc · 10/07/2018 18:48

FFS the shops are closing an hour early for a huge sporting event - get over yourselves. Get your lazy backsides to the shops at mid-day if you are that worried about not having a pint of milk!

Eeeeek2 do you seriously think Aldi and Lidl are closing early incase anyone decides to trash them?

TattyCat · 10/07/2018 18:48

And if the Scottish and Welsh people want to watch England being beaten (as is being bandied around) then why deprive them of that joy??

ForalltheSaints · 10/07/2018 18:50

This will be academic if Croatia win tomorrow.

I'd prefer all large shops to be closed on Sunday in any case, and also Christmas Day and Boxing Day.

TattyCat · 10/07/2018 18:50

I think it is ridiculous to still have restrictive Sunday trading laws which were church imposed in the first place.

Regardless of Church imposed laws, I think having a 'day of rest' is a good thing anyway. Life is becoming 24/7 non-stop and enforced rest is not a bad thing. But that's another thread entirely.

lottiesco · 10/07/2018 18:50

I'm not missing the point. It is the WORLD cup. I couldn't care less if England are in the final or not. And most people outside of England would say the same. Same as it makes no difference if Spain or Nigeria were in the final. I'm not Spanish nor Nigerian, nor do I live there.

OP posts:
luckycat007 · 10/07/2018 18:51

@eeeeek2 I'm inclined to agree that's the principal reason given the way a minority of people behaved the other day - when they won!

lottiesco · 10/07/2018 18:52

It's not about milk guys. It's also about retail workers having their whole day disrupted, having to do the same amount of work in a much shorter space of time, for ANOTHER countries football game.

OP posts:
OftenHangry · 10/07/2018 18:52

It's Iceland. Apparently they feel it is right to do it UK wise

DrCoconut · 10/07/2018 18:53

As long as staff aren't penalised. My ex's place of work closed early a couple of times due to football one year and made everyone take a half days annual leave each time. That's not on, we had planned both our holidays around childcare and going away. So plenty of notice for customers and no loss of money or AL for staff needs to be in place. But yes it's ridiculous that the country is screeching to a halt over sports. What next no A and E because the doctors are football fans?
