To hate own clothes day at school?

It just gets so competitive and clearly differentiates the haves from the have nots... can't I just donate double and DD can wear uniform?

Ds never takes part in them. He is autistic and they throw him completely. Wearing his uniform makes it slightly less stressful

If it was sold as an option she'd probably get together with some of her friends and agree they'd all do it.

She'd never want to be the only one doing it though!

As a teacher I dislike them too. It's shocking what some kids turn up in (secondary) and I don't recognise any of them ha ha

Secondary

I had all the stress when she was at primary. She's now going through it bless her and can understand why I always hated it!

My DS 6 was the only one in uniform last week and I felt horrific. He was in tears most of the day. I felt so dreadful. I had to go straight to work so couldn't even drive home to grab him something to change into when I realised. DP said it wouldn't really matter but that didn't stop my 6 year old crying for most of the day. The teacher let him put his PE top on instead to try and help things which was very nice of her.

When DD was in year 6 they had some dress up day and she decided she didn't want to do it. Funny thing is it was hard getting to wear the uniform every other school day

Dd's school has no uniform, there's no competitiveness over clothing.
They mainly wear a version of jeans and t-shirts, today Dd wore ripped skinnies from Primark, cherry red docs and a sesame st t-shirt.
They compete because it happens rarely, my school was the same, yet when we got to 6th form of the same school with no uniform, no one cared.

My ds never takes part.(by choice!).
I know some kids dread them because they haven't got a particular label or coat.
Also book day,theme days 😬😬
Not everyone has the money to spare.
Also feel so sorry for the kids whose parents don't take an interest against those who are full on!

erm... this was my DS once, We were in the middle of a very stressful time and I just completely forgot it was happening. Blush

I felt AWFUL all day once I realised. Thankfully DS wasnt bothered in the slightest. Probably helps that he was a boy and only about 6 or 7.

DD likes it. I don't think it's competitive at her school as such, though of course they all go to town complimenting each others clothes!

DS doesn't enjoy it as such, but he still ensures his outfit is appropriate Grin

IME they do tend to select their clothes quite carefully and there's no nastiness. Though I imagine its naïve to say that there wouldn't be nasty comments surrounding it, I always think these problems are more down to the children/atmosphere of the school than own clothes.

I agree with Ihave you only get all this nonsense because it’s unusual.

My D.C. don’t wear uniform to school and no one bats an eyelid or comments on anyone else’s clothes.

If schools did away with this archaic uniform nonsense there wouldn't be an issue. Mine used to go to a school with no uniform and it was brilliant. And no one turns up in inappropriate outfits.

After we moved they now have uniform and when its a non uniform day its like this massive drama. Plus it means those on low income can't buy their kids the clothes they want/like because all the money is being spent on bloody uniform. If they let them wear normal clothes at least the money could be spent on things the kids can wear both at school and for out and about.

TA here and I hate them too, I'm in reception and there's always a child that forgets and cries, and you can see how awful their parents feel about it, thankfully we have a huge dress up box and a box of clothes mine and the teachers children have grown out of for just in case so I take them to choose an outfit.

A lot of the outfits further up the school are totally inappropriate, and there are lots of children turn up in things they can't run and play in. I'm pretty sure the kids behave worse on own clothes day too, I think because it is different. But the bit that annoys me most is I've heard parents remind their children not to do painting/water play/football etc in case they ruin their outfits Sad

My two eldest are in Years 5 and 3 (boys). There's no competition at all on NSU days that I see...not between the boys anyway. They all have either jeans or joggers and a t shirt on, with one or two wearing full football kits. Never heared any of them mention it, they all dump their bags in a heap in the yard in the morning and play football until the bell goes, just like every other day.

I can remember agonising over NSU days because we were poor so I never had decent clothes and because my own clothes stank of fags more than my uniform (uniform was washed and tumbled, my clothes were dried at a more leisurely pace on hangers in the bedrooms where my parents were happy to smoke all over them).

I used to dread own clothes day when I was at school. We didn't have much money and my clothes were quite trampy tbh. I remember once pretending I had a headache so I didn't have to go in Blush

I teach in secondary and bloody hate non uniform days!

They seem to send the kids crazy and they don't bring pens/books etc as they think no uniform = no work to do.

Some of the outfits (particularly on girls) are wholly inappropriate - skirts so short their knickers are only just covered, tops that barely cover the chests and loads of make up/fake tan.

It does highlight poorer children as well who normally are not highlighted because everyone wears a school uniform.

I wish we could do away with them!

I'll never forget the day that both of my secondary age kids forgot it was non uniform day. They're stroppy anyway but as soon as they looked out the car window and saw everyone going in with no uniforms they had the tantrum of all tantrums, it was like they were both toddlers again Hmm it culminated in me having to turn the car round, speed drive home and let them have 5 mins to get changed. And then they whined that they were given detention for being late Confused

I volunteer in a primary school, and hate non uniform days because I genuinely don't recognise the children. Somehow, it seems easier when they are all wearing the same, although that doesn't seem logical to me.
