...to feel uncomfortable showering here *pic*

Gym is a while from my house and I go in the morning before work. No time to head home and shower so have to shower there. They've refurbished and taken away the full length solid doors I loved so much and replaced with these which are quite transparent. You can see a lot when people are showering and I feel extremely uncomfortable using them. I am trying to lose weight and don't like my silhouette, and don't like the fact that someone can see me in the shower. AIBU to want the old doors back or is this just me and my self esteem getting in the way? Please no nasty comments, just wondered if it's a reasonable concern.

They're still reasonably opaque though. And in my experience people heading for the showers at the gym are hot, sweaty and keen to get clean so won't be looking at you Smile

JamPasty · 13/05/2018 14:48

Those are pretty crappy doors!! No one will be looking, but I think a lot of people would feel self conscious showering in there. Take a massive towel with you and some clothes pegs and peg it over the door when you shower :)

PandaPolarBear · 13/05/2018 14:48

Doors like that at my gym too... I just hang my towel over the door so nobody can see anything above my knees.

autumnleaves101 · 13/05/2018 14:48

I know what you mean, mine are very similar but I have just got used to it! I don't think people bother looking in reality though so don't let it drop you!

Aeroflotgirl · 13/05/2018 14:48

No I woulden't, I would expect a full length non see through door. I would only shower in my costume in that one.

autumnleaves101 · 13/05/2018 14:49

Stop you **

fiorentina · 13/05/2018 14:49

On appearances I think it’s ok. Lots of gyms/pools don’t have full doors. My gym has something similar. Nobody cares what you look like in the shower so don’t worry. Smile

Whatthefoxgoingon · 13/05/2018 14:49

Nope. I like seeing solid doors too. I want my privacy and I wouldn’t shower there.

wiccamum · 13/05/2018 14:49

Same problem at my gym op, and ours have a really big gap at the bottom!! I don’t like the idea of being even slightly visible, yet I don’t mind when I’m getting dressed (weird, I know). The ones at my gym have a towel hook thingy on the door, so I strategically hang my towel, or you could throw your towel over the door so it gives you more privacy. When I do this the towel doesn’t get wet as the cubicle is pretty roomy.

EdWinchester · 13/05/2018 14:49

Our gym showers are like this.

Doesn't bother me, but I can see how some might prefer something more opaque.

But really - no-one is going to do more than glance.

StopBeingNosey · 13/05/2018 14:49

I hate showers like that and won’t use them. They have ones like that at the spa at Center Parcs. I have very obvious scarring accross my chest - not noticeable in a swimming costume as it’s covered but I won’t risk people seeing it through a screen. I just don’t understand why they make them like that, either have a door or don’t!

bruffin · 13/05/2018 14:49

They have the same doors and showers at Champneys, even on one of the loos, nobody notices

lindyhopy · 13/05/2018 14:50

I wouldn't feel comfortable either. I would complain and I'm sure a lot of other people will too. They could change the doors cheaply

DramaAlpaca · 13/05/2018 14:50

I wouldn't like that either, it's not exactly private is it?

If I had to shower there I'd drape my towel over the top of the door to hang down as far as possible & be very, very quick.

MandalaYogaTapestry · 13/05/2018 14:51

I am not self conscious about my weight but I still want privacy when I shower. And other people do look for that matter. YANBU.

BenjaminaBlue · 13/05/2018 14:52

I didn't even think of draping my towel over the door. Good idea! I just don't see why it is necessary to have see-through doors. Getting changed is different because it isn't an intimate act, whereas showering is. I don't want people to be able to see when I'm washing my bum or lady parts...Confused

Feellikeaheffalump · 13/05/2018 14:52

Wouldn't bother me. The ones in my gym are similar, nobody looks.

Eliza9917 · 13/05/2018 14:57

I worked on a hotel where the wall/door between the bedroom and bathroom were replaced with glass with an opaque strip across them so businessmen could watch prostitutes in the shower apparently.

I don't understand why anywhere would think see through doors are a good idea.

DasPepe · 13/05/2018 14:57

Nope, that’s perfectly reasonable. Not only has there been a change but this is much more “revealing” and I guess more people than before might feel a bit uncomfortable.

Looks like this one is at the end, so it it so bit busy you wouldn’t be so exposed. Can you hang a towel the door?

I personally wouldn’t have a big issue, though I’ve gone past caring! :)
Also, it might sound odd, but whilst I don’t stare, when I was a fitness member I loved seeing women of all sizes change. It was the only place where you would see real women’s bodies: thin, big, floppy, shapely. It was the only place I would witness these real bodies. It was a confirmation that they existed and how different and amazing they all were. I know it sounds bonkers

GerdaLovesLili · 13/05/2018 14:57

18 posts in, and this hasn't turned into but "what if some of the women in the changing room are really men" thread? You're losing your grip MN.

I don't want anybody looking at me when I'm showering, I don't care what their chromosomes are like.

Towel over the door FTW.

GeordieGirl233 · 13/05/2018 14:59

I wouldn't feel comfortable showering in that it's too visual

JakeBallardswife · 13/05/2018 15:01

I have to say though with these sort of doors, purposefully no one looks!

MrMeSeeks · 13/05/2018 15:02

I wouldn't feel comfortable using them.

LexieLulu · 13/05/2018 15:03

Put a separate towel over the door?

BenjaminaBlue · 13/05/2018 15:03

@JakeBallardswife I looked Confused but only for a short instant as I was slightly take aback by how revealing the doors were! Obviously I waited for it to be empty before taking a photo.
