...to feel uncomfortable showering here *pic*

Gym is a while from my house and I go in the morning before work. No time to head home and shower so have to shower there. They've refurbished and taken away the full length solid doors I loved so much and replaced with these which are quite transparent. You can see a lot when people are showering and I feel extremely uncomfortable using them. I am trying to lose weight and don't like my silhouette, and don't like the fact that someone can see me in the shower. AIBU to want the old doors back or is this just me and my self esteem getting in the way? Please no nasty comments, just wondered if it's a reasonable concern.

I wouldn't personally care. At some gyms I've been too (a few years ago to be fair) plenty of women showered naked in the communal showers, nobody cared or gawped and everyone got on with their life.

But you're not unreasonable to care, you can care about anything you like :)

Myimaginarycathasfleas · 13/05/2018 16:41

Grim. Wouldn’t use it. The possibility of a self ID being in the changing room wouldn’t make any difference to me because the whole naked in front of strangers thing would be enough.

Mogleflop · 13/05/2018 16:41

I'd care. I have actual stress dreams about toilets and showers without proper doors or with see-through ones, so I wouldn't be able to use these at all.

Then again I'm too self conscious to join a gym either and have never been inside one, so I'm not exactly a loss to the industry!

soapboxqueen · 13/05/2018 16:42

Tbh if I were visiting for the first time eg deciding on a gym to use, I'd be a bit cautious. I'm not overly self conscious but I wouldn't be 100% happy either. I'd probably ask the gym staff what their policy on self ID was too so I'd know what the lay of the land was, then I'd make a decision.

I think, seeing as you already use the gym, putting a towel over the door is a good idea.

MeadowGrass · 13/05/2018 16:49

I would hang a towel over

snewname · 13/05/2018 16:52

I suggest you take a large black plastic sheet, or a piece of tarpaulin cut to the size of the door, fold it a few inches over the top of the door, from the inside, so that it covers most of it and attach it with a couple of bulldog clips!!

A sure fire way to ensure that people do look at and take notice of you.

A towel casually draped over will do the job.

kingjofferyworksintescos · 13/05/2018 16:52

Haha when I was in Rome one of the art galleries I went into had loo doors like this ! 😯

crunchymint · 13/05/2018 16:54

Why do gyms do this? I wouldn't be happy with this.

HelpTheTigers · 13/05/2018 16:55

I would hate this too. I'm completely staggered at the reasons behind it as explained by other PPs though. Shock

stopfuckingshoutingatme · 13/05/2018 16:57

No one is looking and no one cares

I get why you feel as you do but truly - push through it !!

odig · 13/05/2018 16:57

Well those who aren't bothered don't have a problem, presumably they wouldn't mind solid doors either, so the way to make everyone happy is pretty obvious.

TwigTheWonderKid · 13/05/2018 16:59

Presumably this is a women-only area? If so, I think YABU. I've spent a fair amount of time in Finland where, in swimming pools, everyone is expected to shower naked in a communal shower area (no cubicles at all) The first time I kept my swimming costume on but after that, I felt like such an idiot when everyone else was naked and just getting on with it that I joined in and it was really liberating. No one gave a stuff what they, or anyoneone else, looked like, regardless of age, size, shape or any other "imperfections" and it made me think that if things were the same the UK we might not have such unreasonable expectations about what we "should" look like.

neveradullmoment99 · 13/05/2018 17:00

I would not feel comfortable either. They are really transparent. I wonder who the hell thought that was a good idea!!?? Ridiculous.

Lovemusic33 · 13/05/2018 17:00

I wouldn’t like them either. Luckily I never need to shower at the gym as I’m usually going straight home after.

ScottMumofGirls · 13/05/2018 17:06

Hang your towel over the door. Job done if you have a beach towel
. Or take two in. One to drap and another wrapped round you while you drap

bigbluebus · 13/05/2018 17:06

I agree Twig. Many years ago when I was a teenager, I went on a school trip to Denmark as part of a sports team. AFter the match, we UK children were carefully getting undressed and covering ourselves on our way to the showers whilst the Danish girls came into the changing rooms and just stripped off without a care in the world. It was certainly a moment I never forgot! It is certainly a very British problem.

At my gym the doors are glass but I have no idea how seethrough they are. If I need to use them then I do but they are around the corner from the main changing area so only other people who are showering would be around there anyway, so not a huge audience.

PorkyPortia · 13/05/2018 17:07

I would complain too
bloody awful

Racecardriver · 13/05/2018 17:09

Yes, might be a bit uncomfortable washing down there in this kind of set up. Could you use the one at the very end so no one walks past?

RatRolyPoly · 13/05/2018 17:14

I agree with you and Twig too bigblue, in so many instances body image issues are far fewer in those brought up to have a casual attitude to nudity. I don't know how the UK could follow suit though without making a load of people uncomfortable in the process!

Lucked · 13/05/2018 17:16

I have a friend who works in a gym and apparently people are less likely to shave, especially public areas if the doors are like that. Therefore they stay cleaner.

It looks like the top of the door is high up and seals against the rim so draping a towel will only work if you are tall and have one of those thin Turkish towels mentioned above.

SinglePringle · 13/05/2018 17:25

My gym has opaque doors. Couldn’t give a monkeys.

SinglePringle · 13/05/2018 17:25

But there’s no sharps bin Confused

olderthanyouthink · 13/05/2018 17:32

But what about if you're on your period?

I know all women have them and it's normal and everything but I'm not sure sims want people to see that Confused

OlennasWimple · 13/05/2018 17:40

YANBU - I would hate it too

Eliza Shock Shock I've seen those glass walls and wondered WTF, and now I know

SinglePringle · 13/05/2018 17:41

What on earth would you see during someone’s period? Confused
