...to feel uncomfortable showering here *pic*

Gym is a while from my house and I go in the morning before work. No time to head home and shower so have to shower there. They've refurbished and taken away the full length solid doors I loved so much and replaced with these which are quite transparent. You can see a lot when people are showering and I feel extremely uncomfortable using them. I am trying to lose weight and don't like my silhouette, and don't like the fact that someone can see me in the shower. AIBU to want the old doors back or is this just me and my self esteem getting in the way? Please no nasty comments, just wondered if it's a reasonable concern.

@olderthanyouthink excuse me for being naive but how would you know someone is on their period? Genuinely asking out of curiosity.

OP posts:
crunchymint · 13/05/2018 17:44

I don't care whether anyone is interested in looking in or not. I would not feel comfortable in this shower. And my feelings count

olderthanyouthink · 13/05/2018 17:45

Because unless you had a tampon in it would run down your legs and splash a bit.

Wouldn't want to empty a menstrual cup in there.

ArchchancellorsHat · 13/05/2018 17:48

No I wouldn't want to use that shower either. I don't care if no one is looking, I just want privacy. I'd complain, and if they weren't interested I'd be looking for a new gym.

SinglePringle · 13/05/2018 17:51

Then use a tampon (although I don’t have blood running down my legs when I shower without one and I have heavy periods).

RatRolyPoly · 13/05/2018 18:09

In the shower in the gym?? Is that... you know... socially acceptable? Does it happen?

I'm learning so much about people's mooncup habits!

Wildlingofthewest · 13/05/2018 18:11

Throw your towel over the door so that gives you a bit more privacy if you feel exposed? Try not to worry-no one is looking at each other in the showers!!

olderthanyouthink · 13/05/2018 18:24

@SinglePringle tampons don't work for everyone

@RatRolyPoly don't know, people wash them out in public loo sinks according to MN (though I never have). I haven't used a public shower since starting using a cup but it is convenient to do it in a shower, if you're ok with a public sink maybe you're ok with a public shower?

Nothisispatrick · 13/05/2018 18:40

My gym showers have shared long drains across the cubicle so pretty alarmed at the idea of people emptying their mooncups, wouldn't want to see that go past.

Also I would just shower at home for the few period days if I was that worried about it.

My gym has frosted glass doors and they don't bother me. I also see women do full naked moisturising routines at my gym, which isnt something I'd do myself.

RatRolyPoly · 13/05/2018 18:42

if you're ok with a public sink maybe you're ok with a public shower?

Tbf I was pretty shocked about the public sinks thing; I'm still not entirely sure that's widely socially acceptable, and goodness, is it acceptably hygienic?? I don't even know.

Weirdly I only just got round to googling this and the first site i clicked on makes no mention of sinks. I'm really confused!

Anyway, not to derail... back to showers.

BenjaminaBlue · 13/05/2018 18:43

@Nothisispatrick my old gym had this too as I once had an allergic reaction to someone's shaving cream which floated on by! I wouldn't empty a mooncup in a gym shower, but I know people do which is why I wear flip flops religiously!

OP posts:
Nothisispatrick · 13/05/2018 18:51

Good to know, I'll keep my flip flops on and won't panic if I see blood float past!

FranticallyPeaceful · 13/05/2018 18:54

DPs London apartment has glass doors around his bathroom like this 😱 I don’t like it. We sometimes have my parents or his parents down so if they happen to be wafting down the hall they’ll be able to see skewed naked bums floating around the bathroom... and vice versa. Not nice.

sycamore54321 · 13/05/2018 18:57

Surely nobody empties a moon cup in a public sink? At most they are giving it a rinse after having emptied it in the toilet? Plus unlike a shower tray, nobody actually touches the sink when using it in a public place, so the two things are vastly different. (Disclaimer: I've never rinsed mine in a public sink but I wouldn't be horrified that others do. Someone emptying it in a public shower though, yuk.

Op, the creepiest thing about your gym shower door was that you were able to take a clear photo of it. I would hate if someone was wondering round my gym's shower area with a phone.

I agree with others though, if it makes you uncomfortable, complain to the gym owners about it, and in the meantime drape your towel across.

EdWinchester · 13/05/2018 18:59

empty a mooncup in a gym shower

omg Shock

IronicWitttUsername · 13/05/2018 19:01

no wonder so many people don't want to go to the gym ffs lycra and showering on display - nah

boilerhouse2007 · 13/05/2018 20:29

''no wonder so many people don't want to go to the gym ffs lycra and showering on display - nah''

believe me, the very last reason ppl do not go to the gym are the showering facilities- there's usually 100 other reasons-laziness, lack of motivation, overwhelmed by the idea of it...

Donthugmeimscared · 13/05/2018 21:39

Just looking at that door makes me feel uneasy. I wouldn't in a million years use it even with a towel over it. Then again I won't get changed in communal changing rooms either. The only gym I've ever been a member of had individual changing areas. I know it's my l problem but what is the point of having a door if it's see through.

Fromage · 13/05/2018 22:03

I would leave the gym. nfw would I use those showers. And yes, people do look. You, nice normal posters of mumsnet, might not (I don't) but there are weirdies who do.

AND

if no one is looking, then people will still be shagging and shooting up, won't they? So the glass doors serve no purpose.

finally, I will never go to Denmark or Iceland on holiday.

glitterfarts · 13/05/2018 22:39

@SinglePringle
Then use a tampon (although I don’t have blood running down my legs when I shower without one and I have heavy periods).

I use a mooncup. I have heavy periods. If I use nothing, I would have massive clots falling out and splatting on the floor. I would have blood pouring down my legs. I wouldn't even attempt to empty a menstrual cup in the loo, go to the sink to wash it and go back to the loo - it'd look like there had been a massacre.

Our gym has those shower doors. You can see everything clearly though them, pubic hair or lack of clearly visible, etc. I use the end one on the occasions I have to.

Lovemusic33 · 14/05/2018 07:44

People dont decide not to go to the gym because of the showers Hmm, people don’t go because they can’t be bothered, they are too busy or they worry about being seen exercising. I love going to the gym, I don’t care about the showers as I go home and shower or I go for a swim and use the pool showers (whilst wearing my costume).

Pikehau · 14/05/2018 07:54

Buy a big sarong or those quick drying travel towels that are lightweight and pack small . Then as a pp said peg it over door.

I would be happy enough in these showers - mine are not full length either. Find or wait for an end one.

Moon cups eeeeeewwww - why! Would you pull a tampon out in a gym shower? Don’t pull a moon cup out.

That is why the showers are short doors and opaque as people are so bloody gross (pun intended)

crunchymint · 14/05/2018 09:44

If I am paying for a private gym membership, then the showers and changing room are part of that. And I will choose what gym to go to partly on that basis. I would not go to this one.

IJustLostTheGame · 14/05/2018 10:02

I stopped going to the gym because the showers were just one big communal room, there were no cubicles. I hated it. I would shower at home.
The changing room was communal too, the lockers were tiny you could only get a small handbag in there. and I stopped going after I saw one lady have a nosy at my bra label and make a face at the size.
I like my privacy.

ThisIsTheFirstStep · 14/05/2018 10:07

I’m really surprised by these answers. Am I the only freak who couldn’t care less if someone sees me showering?

I don’t live in the UK right now and everything here is just open showers. But even when I lived in the UK, my gym had communal showers and I didn’t care about using them.

My body is far from perfect and I have some scars but I’ve never noticed anyone even glancing.
