...to feel uncomfortable showering here *pic*

Gym is a while from my house and I go in the morning before work. No time to head home and shower so have to shower there. They've refurbished and taken away the full length solid doors I loved so much and replaced with these which are quite transparent. You can see a lot when people are showering and I feel extremely uncomfortable using them. I am trying to lose weight and don't like my silhouette, and don't like the fact that someone can see me in the shower. AIBU to want the old doors back or is this just me and my self esteem getting in the way? Please no nasty comments, just wondered if it's a reasonable concern.

I think
People take less notice of us than we are think, but I’d not be happy with that, and would be draping my towel over it.

CheeseRollingChampion · 13/05/2018 15:30

I'd hate it. I would shower in my costume with my towel over the door.

SporkInTheToaster · 13/05/2018 15:34

My gym doesn’t have shape bins or see through doors Shock

SporkInTheToaster · 13/05/2018 15:34

ShaRps bins

Aragog · 13/05/2018 15:36

Wouldn't like that at all. I want solid or incredibly opaque doors. It would mean I would do anything to avoid showering there if i could; and taking some towel pegs to cover the door with my towel if I had to.

80sMum · 13/05/2018 15:36

I wouldn't like that at all!

I suggest you take a large black plastic sheet, or a piece of tarpaulin cut to the size of the door, fold it a few inches over the top of the door, from the inside, so that it covers most of it and attach it with a couple of bulldog clips!!

diddl · 13/05/2018 15:38

Wouldn't bother me.

The showers at the pool I use are communal & most of us still strip off.

Those would seem very private!

youarenotkiddingme · 13/05/2018 15:42

Agree with towel. I use the XL microfibres one from decathalon over the door and have another to dry myself with - both take up less room than a normal towel!

Yanbu to want a non sew through door though!

Magpie24 · 13/05/2018 15:43

Actually wouldn't bother me

Eliza9917 · 13/05/2018 15:48

Dye your hair in there and get hair dye all over the door in strategic places Grin

EastMidsMummy · 13/05/2018 15:50

Perfectly fine. Your silhouette won’t look any different naked in translucent glass than in does in gym wear.

Andylion · 13/05/2018 15:50

A lot of people are saying that no-one will be looking, but, if I'm honest, the first time I went there, I would be surprised, then probably check out the first stall I saw to see how much I could see so I would know how much others could see. I imagine many first-timers might do the same.

Apologies for the poorly written first sentence.

nibblingandbiting · 13/05/2018 15:52

My gym has proper doors and no sharpe bins.
Last time I saw a door like that the other part of the bad design was it was in front of a window. On the ground floor. Overlooking a busy street.
When the flaw was mentioned it took a lot of explaining and complaints for the person in charge to see the issue 😂

NorbertTheDragon · 13/05/2018 15:55

They have doors like this in the toilets in the local shopping centre. I hate them and refuse to use them. I go upstairs where, for some reason, they have normal wooden doors.

I don't want anyone looking at me on the loo!

PositivelyPERF · 13/05/2018 16:00

They have doors like this in the toilets in the local shopping centre. won’t that be fun if self ID comes in? 🙄

PositivelyPERF · 13/05/2018 16:00

Yes, I went there!

TomRavenscroft · 13/05/2018 16:05

if I'm honest, the first time I went there, I would be surprised, then probably check out the first stall I saw to see how much I could see so I would know how much others could see.

Good God, how do people have the time and headspace to think about stuff like this?

GeorgeTheHippo · 13/05/2018 16:13

Ours are the same. I think they are fine.

RatRolyPoly · 13/05/2018 16:16

Personal opinion? Wouldn't bother me. But then again we don't even have cubicles at my sports club, let alone doors.

I understand how you feel though OP, and obviously you're not alone. I do think though that these will be for discouraging nefarious behaviour, as a couple of PP have asserted. In which case they're unlikely to change them unless you and a good number of others come forward and complain - assuming a good number of others at your gym agree with you!

I think you should mention it though, if you feel strongly about it.

Neolara · 13/05/2018 16:20

I would stop going to a gym that had showers like that.

BenjaminaBlue · 13/05/2018 16:22

Looks like a bit of a marmite reaction however glad I'm not alone as I feel slightly less of a weirdo to not feel comfortable using these!

Sharps bin in a gym? Confused never seen that before and I've been a member of a few!

OP posts:
Bagadverts · 13/05/2018 16:24

I wouldn't feel comfortable with that. I even find communal changing difficult, though I do use them. I don't mind others getting changed. I don't think I'm ashamed, just grew up in a family that was very private - wasn't a problem at the pool where I grew up as there were cubicles, maybe I would be less self conscious if it had been more public. now my gym and pool each just have an open area.

BusterTheBulldog · 13/05/2018 16:29

It wouldn’t bother me at all. Very gym I’ve been to had had these or similar. It’s more of a blur than a silouette you can see, I’ve never noticed or given any thought to who was in them, I’m only interested in getting showered and getting out as son as poss.

Deemarow · 13/05/2018 16:31

There are no doors or curtains at the showers in my Gym, it bothered me at first but I soon realised that everyone is just trying to get clean and do not even think to look at anyone else whilst they're showering.

ellie232 · 13/05/2018 16:32

No one’s going to stand there staring; it wouldn’t bother me.
