To think Friends got stupid?

Ok I used to love the tv show years ago and started rewatching episodes on Netflix.

But what the hell is the one where Joey speaks French?! Are we really meant to believe he’s so stupid he can’t even repeat words and genuinely believes he’s speaking French? Hmm

OP posts:
Happygummibear · 15/04/2018 17:04

I still find it funny..... sometimes I just need to have simple telly for my tired mind to watch 🤣

IWantMyHatBack · 15/04/2018 17:08

I love it, it's perfect for when I'm hungover and my brain can't process anything too complicated

WashingMatilda · 15/04/2018 17:08

Yeah, I agree to a certain extent, the French thing was kind of tedious if you didn't suspend disbelief.
I've been really ill and be rewatching it all on Netflix as well, and I've got to the season where Joey and Rachel get together and OH MY GOD WHY DID THEY DO THAT.
It's single handedly the worst decision any script writers have ever made EVER.
There was no chemistry whatsoever, that whole season is just so insatiably awkward.

Spangles1963 · 15/04/2018 17:10

Got stupid? Always was IMO. runs and hides

RoughPatchMum · 15/04/2018 17:17

I agree the French speaking storyline is stupid but the very last scene of that episode where joey pours down his front drinks a gallon of milk in 10 seconds is one of my favourites, it’s hilarious Grin

Eatsleepworkrepeat · 15/04/2018 17:18

At the time I thought the French episode was fire, however they've recently started to teach French at my sons lower school and it now regularly springs to mind. Ds is so proud, bless him, that he's speaking another language Grin

Eatsleepworkrepeat · 15/04/2018 17:18

Was dire... See I can't even type in English

Jeffjefftyjeff · 15/04/2018 17:22

I often refer to the ‘Joey speaking French’ episode when I’m trying to explain how bad DP is at languages. He’s not that bad, obviously (no one is), but he cannot accurately repeat back what’s been said to him. It’s like he can’t hear accent/ nuance etc.
You’re right though.

Je m'appelle Claude!

TheQueenOfWands · 15/04/2018 17:24

Tut t'la fruit!!

That's easily the best episode.

Aworldofmyown · 15/04/2018 17:31

I watched them all when I was pregnant and suffering with Hypermesis - it was a perfect distraction!!!

blackteasplease · 15/04/2018 17:39

I used to watch it as a student all the time almost becyase I hated it so much! Almost as a weird kind do ad flagellation! Blush

haverhill · 15/04/2018 17:44

I thought the Joey/French thing was hilarious. I don’t think we were meant to ‘believe’ it. Matt Le Blanc’s gormless expression was comedy gold.

Buster72 · 15/04/2018 17:54

The stupid part is paying 7.99 a month for a service that shows repeats of a 20 year old show that has been repeated ad nauseam on channel 4.
Netflix sucks

iffyjiffybag · 15/04/2018 18:12

The series was based on a premise where you only needed to watch one episode, the entire rest of them were all the same, IIRC.

willynillypie · 15/04/2018 18:26

RoughPatchMum

I never understand if the joke is that he can't drink the milk but thinks he can, or that we should suspend our disbelief and think he can drink it?

SaucyJane · 15/04/2018 18:31

It's just hyperbole - I don't think they hit many wrong notes in ten years. It never jumped the shark.

Some of it is a bit dated now (e.g. some of the gay jokes, even though they also had a lesbian couple and wedding), but mostly I think it's aged pretty well. My nieces and nephew love it, and they weren't even born when it finished (Christ I feel old now).

Tinkie25 · 15/04/2018 18:31

I still love it. Pivot! Is my favourite episode.

SaucyJane · 15/04/2018 18:31

Ha, joey soooo thought he had drunk all that milk...

Unfinishedkitchen · 15/04/2018 18:32

Buster72, you are Rupert Murdoch and I claim my £5!

SaucyJane · 15/04/2018 18:32

My favourite episode is the one with the game where they end up swapping apartments.

A whole £7.99 🤣 it’s not repeated anymore. And there is lots of other stuff on Netflix.

I have to admit though, friends hasn’t aged well

NotACleverName · 15/04/2018 18:35

We have to get off MN, there's something wrong with the left phalange.

PeanutButterSquash · 15/04/2018 18:36

It was always stupid tbh ive tried watching it more than once.
End up switching off within 5 minutes

Amanduh · 15/04/2018 18:37
