To think Friends got stupid?

Ok I used to love the tv show years ago and started rewatching episodes on Netflix.

But what the hell is the one where Joey speaks French?! Are we really meant to believe he’s so stupid he can’t even repeat words and genuinely believes he’s speaking French? Hmm

I loved the one with Ben Stiller as the Screamer "dumb Donald dodo" Chandler "step away from the duck"

covetingthepreciousthings · 15/04/2018 23:29

I love Friends & was so happy when Netflix got it. It is pure comfort TV for me.

Do you think Friends is for a certain generation? Would teens love it nowadays?

I always wonder what it was about Friends that made it stand out from everything else and become such an iconic show - more relatable maybe?

My favourite episode was The One Where No-ones Ready - with 'you stole the essence of the chair' Grin

Cagliostro · 15/04/2018 23:32

As well as Rachel’s (well, Jennifer Anniston’s) reaction to the bagpipes, my DCs love the episode with Ross’ keyboards for similar reasons. Also I need to show them the one with all the pranks where they throw a fake Ross down the stairs at the end and she totally freaks out.

There is absolutely no way I could pick a favourite episode. I couldn’t even pick one per series. Maybe one per disc :o

Cagliostro · 15/04/2018 23:32

But you left the chair area!

Cagliostro · 15/04/2018 23:35

We quote friends all the time. I’d never watched it as a teen but when DH moved in he brought his set of series 3 on VHS :o and I never looked back. I think it was on season 7 then and we even had a little party for the last episode :o

Now as the DCs are watching it DD keeps noticing bits and saying oh so that’s why you and dad say that! Things like moo point etc

PivotPivotPIVOTTT · 15/04/2018 23:37

Cagliostro I watched that episode the other night with the fake Ross been thrown down the stairs. The writers didn't tell Jennifer Aniston this was going to happen so her reaction is actually real in this scene.

Cagliostro · 15/04/2018 23:43

Yes I’d heard that! It is funny getting a glimpse of the actress reacting herself I think, as the reaction seems so over the top but it’s not fake :o

IDSNeighbour · 16/04/2018 00:05

Ahhhh, no, you can't criticise Friends!

It's not supposed to be believable, I don't think.

I have the entire collection on DVD and must have watched it 10 times over but still laugh. It keeps me going when I can't sleep, can't get out of bed and everything else makes me cry. It's the ultimate depression and insomnia coping toolkit.

Graphista · 16/04/2018 00:09

At one point I had all the videos, books and the cd, then I had all the DVDs. I don't now but I'd like to get the books again.

Graphista · 16/04/2018 00:11

Dd 17 also loves it and watches with her friends.

While there is a dated quality it's also perennial in its relation to that time in life when you're closer to your friends than your family.

Hedwig86 · 16/04/2018 00:11

I’m enjoyed Friends but the learning French storyline stands out as probably the worst.

ManchesterGin · 16/04/2018 00:19

When Rachel is heavily pregnant and screams “get out, get out, get ouuuuut”

Ross and his L O V E speech

The Manny

The penis cake

When Monica’s dad slides pamphlets under the door where he thinks Monica and chandler and trying for a baby

But I think my all time fave is “I’ve just bamboozled chandler!!!!”

MathsFiend · 16/04/2018 00:20

I can't believe I've read the whole thread and no-one has mentioned the best character ever, Eddie. Especially the bit in the coffee shop when he tells the others about the trip he room with Chandler to Vegas. Hmm Grin

PivotPivotPIVOTTT · 16/04/2018 00:21

Maths I did!!Grin

ManchesterGin · 16/04/2018 00:21

Oops I forgot to mention that I agree the French one is a bit crap but I don’t think it’s the worst one!

PivotPivotPIVOTTT · 16/04/2018 00:22

Oh no wait sorry that was on the other Friends thread I mentioned himBlush. I clearly watch and talk about Friends to much!

MathsFiend · 16/04/2018 00:24

Ha ha, Pivot, was feeling a bit guilty there!

MathsFiend · 16/04/2018 00:25

The worst episode is the thanksgiving one where they play American football.

CadyHeron · 16/04/2018 01:06

I love the Eddie episodes. Where he watches Chandler sleeping and he wakes up.
"Oh,you wake up this once and get scared? What about all the other nights I had the decency to hide behind the door when you got up,huh?!"
"Oh,you want me to go?I wanna hear it from your LIPS."
Chandler - "Where did you hear it from before?!" Grin

bridgetoc · 16/04/2018 01:16

My DH hates Friends with a passion. It's what he would call a womans programme.

I used to quite like it, but it has dated really badly. It's just not funny..........

Graphista · 16/04/2018 01:18

Hated Eddie episodes don't like that actor at all.

BuntyII · 16/04/2018 01:28

I really liked pre London Friends. It all changed after London. It was still funny but a bit more glossy and OTT.

CadyHeron · 16/04/2018 01:42

it has dated really badly. It's just not funny.........

"Step awaay from the thread" then lol

Glitterbugg · 16/04/2018 02:00

I can’t believe that no one has mentioned Janice.

“Joey-and-Janice’s-day-of-fun”

Mamaryllis · 16/04/2018 02:01

My teens love Friends. But sadly ds (who is 16) loves it so much, he no longer wants to be an engineer, he wants to be Joey. Ffs. So be careful what you wish for...
