To think Friends got stupid?

Ok I used to love the tv show years ago and started rewatching episodes on Netflix.

But what the hell is the one where Joey speaks French?! Are we really meant to believe he’s so stupid he can’t even repeat words and genuinely believes he’s speaking French? Hmm

It made the six of them a million dollars an episode at the end for a reason.

THIS. Good comedy is much harder to write and perform than people think.

LaurieMarlow · 15/04/2018 20:18

It peaked at seasons 2-4 and was going slowly downhill since then. I still love most of it though.

Some of those later season secondary storylines were dumb, 'tis true.

Though the Ross ones piss me off the most.

Joey actually grew on me significantly as a character. He had a lot of heart towards the end and I was convinced by his feelings for Rachel. Not so much the other way though.

Littlepond · 15/04/2018 20:25

I still love Friends. Perfect hangover TV or just comfort viewing. Yes it’s stupid in places and I never realised just how much they talk about porn... but I love it and it’s fun. So many good episodes, so many good quotes. DH and I always refer to something which is a moot point as “a cow’s opinion”. “What crisps do the kids want in their lunch?” “Well we’ve run out of crisps anyway so it’s a cows opinion”

murmelimoo · 15/04/2018 20:27

As a french teacher that episode is frighteningly realistic.

I am a huge fan Smile

PelvicFloorClenchReminder · 15/04/2018 20:55

But Joey was the only one clever enough to switch the heater off at the switch when the knob broke.

itssquidstella · 15/04/2018 20:57

I can take the comedy, dated though it now is. But I've never been able to stand the sentimental episodes - especially Chandler and Monica's proposal/engagement, and the episode when they find out they've been selected to adopt. That kind of naff American sentimentality makes me want to barf.

spanky2 · 15/04/2018 20:58

How Rachel ended up with the jealous man child Ross I can never understand.

clary · 15/04/2018 21:03

Joey is the best. That's all

clary · 15/04/2018 21:05

My fave bit is where is mum walks in, gives him a lasagne, tells him off and fixes the sofa bed he has been battling with for the last five mins.

Domino20 · 15/04/2018 21:47

Monica in her fat suit is amazing!

bumbleymummy · 15/04/2018 21:50

I didn’t like the Joey speaking French episode at all.

And I hated the whole ‘Joey loves Rachel’ storyline and the episodes where they got together.

Love the series in general though!

lynmilne65 · 15/04/2018 22:01

I have never watched an episode of friends!!!!!

MsGameandWatching · 15/04/2018 22:08

I know Ross is hated on here but he was my favourite and his physical comedy is second to none. I think he had the best story lines - fake tan, leather trousers, UV teeth, woman's jumper on the date where she showed up wearing the same one and last but not least PIVOT! I loved him and still laugh thinking of some of his lines and actions on that show.

PivotPivotPIVOTTT · 15/04/2018 22:13

I love Ross too. Especially when he huffs and flounces. I love how he says "I prefer not to answer that right now....I'm still carrying a little holiday weight...."

LaurieMarlow · 15/04/2018 22:14

I think he had the best story lines - fake tan, leather trousers, UV teeth, woman's jumper on the date where she showed up wearing the same one and last but not least PIVOT!

Apart from pivot (which I concede was funny) I hate all those storylines with a passion.

MsGameandWatching · 15/04/2018 22:17

And "SANDWICH?!!" 😁

BlueberryButtons · 15/04/2018 22:17

I always took the episode with Joe’s French as an eggagerated joke until I had a lesson with my beginner non-native English student and tried teaching him the word “hamburger”. We had such a hearty laugh as even my student himself recognised how far from the actual pronunciation his variant was Grin Joe’s Fench episode added new colours and lifelike truthfulness since then Grin

BlueberryButtons · 15/04/2018 22:20

MsGame love each and every of the episodes you’d mentioned, that’s pure gold!

PivotPivotPIVOTTT · 15/04/2018 22:23

Ross playing the bagpipes is one of my favourite scenes and the out take for it is hilarious. They left Jennifer Aniston trying to hide her laughter in the episode.

Graphista · 15/04/2018 22:24

I love friends but am not oblivious to its faults. It is dated and sometimes bigoted.

Regarding the episode in the op as lisa kudrow and Matt le Blanc are both actual French speakers I always thought it would've been funnier if in the episode where it's revealed they meet up like once a month to discuss the others if they'd just slipped into discussing the others in French in front of them.

Even the cast hated the Joey loves Rachel storyline.

Couldn't pick a favourite ep I don't think, I like the sweet ones best though

When carol has Ben (Phoebe in the cleaning cupboard)

He's her lobster

Chandler and Monica is my favourite storyline so like many of their episodes.

But for pure laugh out loud

The who knows who best quiz
Joey making the tv cabinet (chandlers door fall)
Ross's tan nightmare

Onetraumaatatimeplease · 15/04/2018 22:28

I love the flashback episodes. Fat Monica has some dance moves Grin
Also love the celeb cameos (apart from brad Pitt, he was shitt). Kathleen turner as chandlers mum was a fab bit of casting.

MsGameandWatching · 15/04/2018 22:32

See I liked the Brad Pitt one, on a few occasions you could see him properly laughing at them. It seemed quite naturally done to me, that episode.

Graphista · 15/04/2018 22:38

Erm Kathleen turner actually plays chandlers dad.

Agree Brad Pitt was shit but he's a crap actor anyway.

CadyHeron · 15/04/2018 22:42

Kathleen Turner as Chandler's Dad was brilliant.
Helena Handcart in her Viva Las Gaygas Show, and Mr Garibaldi on piano Grin

CadyHeron · 15/04/2018 22:46

Ooh, also classic line at Monica and Chandler's pre wedding dinner.
Chandlers Dad to Chandlers Mum - "aren't you a little too old to be wearing a dress like that?"

Chandlers mum - "Don't you have a little too much penis to be wearing a dress like that?"

Chandler - "Oh.My. God." Lol Grin
