Open access link. www.thetimes.co.uk/article/mumsnet-founder-justine-roberts-transgender-activists-try-to-curb-free-speech-on-site-z3sr3nf6q?shareToken=ade388be59ac427155003eff83c5158c

“Transgender activists have contacted Mumsnet advertisers and said they will be organising a boycott of their products if they don’t remove their advertising from Mumsnet,” Roberts said.

“A significant minority of our users feel very strongly about women’s rights and very uneasy [about the proposals]. This is an issue that needs to be discussed and that’s why we’re prepared to take any potential advertising hit.”

"Significant minority" makes me think 30-49% rather than minuscule numbers. It makes me think it's more women than I thought before, not less.

Whatever the real stat is, I'd be interested in the mechanisms of estimating it, it's unlikely that it's an arbitrary phrase.

SeekEveryEveryKnownHidingPlace · 15/04/2018 17:56

Ok, I would have preferred 'significant group' or 'number'. But it's progress, and I think it's clear from the article that Justine thinks this concern is reasonable.

AssignedPuuurfectAtBirth · 15/04/2018 17:59

Reluctant

Much as I wish sending Gin to MNHQ was my idea, I have to bow to ir being Haddock's genius

You need to add new address in Amazon

BarbarianMum · 15/04/2018 18:12

Good.

I hope Mumsnet will make us aware of any advertising boycott because, like others, I'd be doing a bit of boycotting of my own.

Hypermice · 15/04/2018 18:16

Yup. If anyone becomes aware of any companies that pull ads because of this, please do make us aware. They will not be receiving any of my cash again.

Jux · 15/04/2018 18:16

Gin on its way to HQ via Amazon (hope I got the right address!).

namechangedasaguider · 15/04/2018 18:20

Thank you Justine, for standing up to the bullies and defending free speech.

Whatever your views on the trans/self id issue, the #nodebate stuff has to stop.

I have bought stuff after seeing mn adverts, so has almost everyone on here. So advertisers, 12 million users, of every age and type or a few TRA bullies hiding g behind masks and their computer screens? Who do you think spends the most?

SocraticCat · 15/04/2018 18:23

Another lurker popping in to say thanks Justine for standing up for freedom of speech.

I am a little concerned about MNHQ this coming week, though, as all those Amazon deliveries start arriving...

TulipsInAJug · 15/04/2018 18:26

This is a great article, however when will MN stop the Feminism and Women's rights topic from being hidden?? Justine needs to put her words into action.

MrsWooster · 15/04/2018 18:27

This is a good place to be part of unlike a lot of the internet thanks MN.

TulipsInAJug · 15/04/2018 18:28

Sorry, just read the MN update about FWR being moved back.... Fantastic! Thanks MN. Flowers

PurpleCrowbar · 15/04/2018 18:28

Brilliant. & super impressed at re opening of FWR. Gin

littlevoiceofsanity · 15/04/2018 18:34

Thank you

Mydoghatesthebath · 15/04/2018 18:38

I think it’s such an important issue but lots of women have no idea it’s happening. My dds my dils my friends were completely unaware of this.

Commentators and journalists not asking the questions of politicians on this issue

Littledrummergirl · 15/04/2018 18:42

Thank you.

Peanutbuttercups21 · 15/04/2018 18:43

Good on MN

I really detest the trans activist bully tactics

Am not even against self ID (depends on certain parameters though), and am def not anti-trans. I just think the bully "no debate allowed" tactics are anti free-speech and anti democratic and just plain nasty.

CackleCrackle · 15/04/2018 18:47

Yes exactly what peanut said. I would be for self ID with clearer protections perhaps but the squashing of debate has been gruesome and alienating.

Sarahconnor1 · 15/04/2018 18:49

Peanutbuttercups21 isn't that the main issue though. TAs will not accept your parameters. It's all or nothing (and screams of transphobe) unless you utterly capitulate to the TW are women mantra

goodthinking99 · 15/04/2018 19:01

Thanks to all at MN towers for shining a light on this issue. Open debate is good, and every woman I have raised this with IRL is interested and wants the freedom to discuss this openly without being labelled a bigot. A significant minority may be growing into a majority if people are allowed to speak without accusations being thrown.

catsandsprogs · 15/04/2018 19:04

Well done & Thankyou Justine & Mumsnet Thanks

ForalltheSaints · 15/04/2018 19:04

I am a man (stating this for the purposes of transparency) and 'identify' as one (to use the language that TAs would use). I have contributed to a few of the threads exhibiting concern about the proposals, in particular that on Hampstead Ladies Pond.

Whilst it may only be 5 or 10% of MN users that have contributed to threads on the issue, I think these represent a significant minority of MN members.

It seems to me that very few if any of those raising concerns about self-identification have any objection to someone who have completed gender reassignment being able to participate in any women-only activity, except perhaps competitive women's sport. Even the objection to self-identification is largely in defined circumstances, such as where women are changing, in swimwear, and sport.

I applaud Justine Roberts for her stance on this.

Agerbilatemycardigan · 15/04/2018 19:19

Thank you to all at Mumsnet for upholding free speech and keeping democracy alive Flowers

Acorninspring · 15/04/2018 19:20

I'm a (mostly) lurker but am part of the significant minority. I am so so relieved that mumsnet is upholding free speech. Thank you so much Justine and MNHQ.

ElfrideSwancourt · 15/04/2018 19:29

Another regular lurker and occasional poster - thank you Justine and MNHQ for standing up to bullying ThanksGin
