Open access link. www.thetimes.co.uk/article/mumsnet-founder-justine-roberts-transgender-activists-try-to-curb-free-speech-on-site-z3sr3nf6q?shareToken=ade388be59ac427155003eff83c5158c

“Transgender activists have contacted Mumsnet advertisers and said they will be organising a boycott of their products if they don’t remove their advertising from Mumsnet,” Roberts said.

“A significant minority of our users feel very strongly about women’s rights and very uneasy [about the proposals]. This is an issue that needs to be discussed and that’s why we’re prepared to take any potential advertising hit.”

Thank God someone has the guts to stand up to the trans lobby. Well done Justine and MNHQ.

FreiasBathtub · 15/04/2018 19:37

Adding my thanks to Justine and the MNHQ team. Glad to see FWR will be back in Active (like many others my engagement began by idly clicking a thread on Active Conversations).

I can honestly say that without MN and the amazing women posting here I wouldn't have ever understood why I might need to move beyond my knee jerk 'live and let live' position on this issue. They're still educating me today, especially some of the transwomen who have recently started to share their stories. They, and other posters, ensure that I keep critically interrogating my knee jerk responses (which now probably tend more the other way!).

This is not a simple issue and without a space to discuss it from every angle, to learn from each other and to debate, we are never going to find a way through it that's acceptable and safe for the majority of people.

Thank you again, MNHQ, for providing this space.

BoreOfWhabylon · 15/04/2018 20:00

I must say it's lovely to see all the lurkers surfacing, as well as quite a few names I recognise from olden times. Smile

PositivelyPERF · 15/04/2018 20:05

BoreOfWhabylon I was just about to say the same. So lovely to know that we have so many wonderful ‘watchers’.

elastamum · 15/04/2018 20:07

Thank you for standing up for women's rights. From one of your significant minority!

Dumbledoreswarrier · 15/04/2018 20:14

Another person here who has been educated on this issue by mumsnet threads. Thanks for standing up for free speech!

WorkingItOutAsIGo · 15/04/2018 20:15

And my thanks too after what has been a difficult week in the FWR pages.

CertainHalfDesertedStreets · 15/04/2018 20:16

Luffing you here as well as on FWR thread.

I will buy something from an MN advertiser everyday for a week ❤❤💖

Marisa444 · 15/04/2018 20:16

I've been prompted to 'sign up' after reading about this today. I've visited to read the 'talk' boards and articles off and on for years but the stance Mumsnet has taken has really made me feel they are committed to women and not just a business. So here I am joining so to speak.

Zone2mum · 15/04/2018 20:16

Lurker here too on the trans topics. Horrified by the attempts to deny women's experiences of sexism which is obviously caused by our biology and isn't something we can identify out of.
There seems to be a very regressive attitude based on sexual stereotyping permeating the debate on self ID which to me has not only sexism at its heart but also homophobia. Male bodied "lesbians" with full working male genitalia - I had no idea this was a thing at all until recently. I would be surprised if most people realise that the self ID thing is not necessarily for transsexuals who actually seek to modify their bodies permanently due to severe gender dysphoria.
I also really object to the nonsense of rapists and male bodied offenders (sexual or otherwise)being classed as women for the official crime stats. Biology is not bigotry.
People are scared to speak out. Thanks to mumsnet there is a space for debate.

FusionChefGeoff · 15/04/2018 20:20

Here here it's amazing to be part of something that won't back down to bully boy tactics.

Thank you Mumsnet

PixelLady42 · 15/04/2018 20:27

I have lurked for a while on the feminism boards and found learning about the hatred, silencing and oppressing of all discussion of the proposed transgender rights changes on almost all areas of the web (except Mumsnet!) enlightening and horrifying in equal measure.
Once I started to find out about what has been going on, to get a firsthand view of things I attended a Women's Place discussion which raised many interesting and insightful points on women's rights, transgender rights and why the proposed changes trying to be pushed through are so dangerous.

Thank you Mumsnet for standing up for women, and for being willing to potentially sacrifice some sponsorship to do the right thing.
This is not a black and white issue, and needs a safe and reasonable place to thoroughly discuss what is happening and what we can do to keep women and children's rights from being eroded in future.

ReappearingWoman · 15/04/2018 20:32

Thank you for your thoughts Pixel, it's heartening to know that the silent lurkers are listening & taking up the challenge to find out more offline. Face to face discussion does help more & it's great to see you attended a WPUK meeting.

I've been to 2 meetings & they are pretty thought provoking & inspiring at the same time.

Rufustherenegadereindeer1 · 15/04/2018 20:47

i will take Adblocker off

Though its going straight back on if it makes mumsnet slow Smile

AstraiaLiberty · 15/04/2018 20:48

I've just read the whole thread and it's wonderful to see so many women standing up for free speech and women's rights.

Thank you, Mumsnet. I was feeling profoundly discouraged by the fact that not one political party seems to care about what women have to say about this at all. You're so much braver than them. I'm proud to be a member here.

birdsdestiny · 15/04/2018 20:50

Will you please stop sending them gin, if there is a backlash, we need the fuckers to be sober.

AssignedPuuurfectAtBirth · 15/04/2018 20:55

Bird I've never sent total strangers a thank you gift before but MNHQ really do deserve Gin and I'm fairly sure they will have worked through it before Grin

Flopsymopsycottontailbuns · 15/04/2018 20:56

Awesome Justine, who the fuck do they think they are bullying people?
And as a marketing manager I will be finding a way to direct some of my budget to Mumsnet in support!

dointhedo · 15/04/2018 21:09

Thank you! (Lurker here too)

busyboysmum · 15/04/2018 21:11

Just been reading through the comments on The Times article. They are amazing. Overwhelmingly in support of MN's stance. I hope the politicians are reading these articles.
