For not paying for my sons mistake

Hello,
My son and I were at my DM and DF house today and my DM left my DS unattended on their tablet while I was in the bathroom. My DS accidentally purchased £4 worth of game coins (he's 2 so didn't know what he was doing!). I was talking my DF through how to claim the money back and he said 'or we could just get the money back from you guys' I said 'no, you are the ones silly enough to leave him unattended on a unprotected tablet after I've told you not too' he just said 'well he's your son.' My phone then started to ring so that was conversation over. I know it's only £4 but AIBU for refusing to pay it after I have shown them how to password protect it, and warned a few times not to leave him unattended on it (and he could claim the money back via the app but wants to keep the game coins for free, without the hassle of talking to android) I don't have the best relationship with DF so not sure if I'm just being petty!

Good grief!
It’s £4!
pay it and ask them not to give him the ipad/ put it away if they can’t be bothered to password protect it

BreakfastAtSquiffanys · 29/03/2018 18:46

I'd give them the £4.
In 1p pieces.

AssassinatedBeauty · 29/03/2018 18:46

No YANBU, they made the decision to leave him unattended on the tablet after you warned them not to. Totally their responsibility.

2cats2many · 29/03/2018 18:47

Unless you are bloody really strapped for last, then yes, you are being petty.

Give them the £4 and then show them how to prevent in app purchases in future. Life's too short for this kind of shizzle.

Antigonads · 29/03/2018 18:47

Just forget about it. They won't make that mistake again.

Notgotajarofglue · 29/03/2018 18:48

Not sure which one of you is the tightest Confused

2cats2many · 29/03/2018 18:48

Bloody auto-correct 😂

What I meant to say was: Unless you are really strapped for cash, then yes, you are being petty

Allthewaves · 29/03/2018 18:50

Just say no to him having tablet and give him your phone. I think your both mad

5plusMeAndHim · 29/03/2018 18:51

You were in the house too, they were doing you a favour watching him,

RadioGaGoo · 29/03/2018 18:52

I'd would say to them that if £4 is such a big deal to them, they can have it. Then tell them not to leave DS unattended again.

LockedOutOfMN · 29/03/2018 18:52

Whilst what you've done and said is NU, op, personally, I would pay them the 4 pounds, but make it clear you won't do it in future if they ignore your wishes not to let DS use the tablet unsupervised. (You could also claim back the money through the app so you're not out of pocket). It sounds as though it might be best to ask them not to give the tablet to DS full stop.

RadioGaGoo · 29/03/2018 18:55

5plusMeandHim. So you think that the OP should never leave DC with GP alone again? Do you think GP would be happy about that?

IWannaSeeHowItEnds · 29/03/2018 18:55

But they clearly weren't watching him, or this wouldn't have happened. If you take responsibility for a child, then actually be responsible! I think your dad is tight in asking you for the money.

MissionItsPossible · 29/03/2018 18:55

You are being petty but I would be too and certainly wouldn't be paying it back if I had made it clear beforehand he was not to be left alone with the tablet.

BonnieF · 29/03/2018 18:56

You are both being ridiculously petty.

It’s £4, less than the price of a G&T.

Get over it, and yourselves. Lock the iPad in future.

Serialweightwatcher · 29/03/2018 18:58

I think they're being unreasonable as they let him use it - thank goodness it wasn't £400 or what would they have done then?

PinkHeart5914 · 29/03/2018 18:58

Blimey it’s £4 I’d just give it to them!

snewsname · 29/03/2018 18:59

This isn't about the tablet is it? The buying of the coins should be irrelevant to you both. It goes deeper than that.

KitKat1985 · 29/03/2018 18:59

I'd give them the £4 on the basis that they password protect the tablet so it doesn't happen again.

Lweji · 29/03/2018 19:00

You pay the £4, then they won't bother protecting the tablet next time either, and your son will spend £40 or £400 and they'll still expect you to pay for something that it wasn't your fault or under your control.

Make it very clear that they are responsible for anything that happens to or with the tablet if they decide to let your son unsupervised with it.

If they do mention it again, though, I wouldn't make a big fuss and just laugh it off with a "nice try" reply.

JaneEyre70 · 29/03/2018 19:00

GIve them the money, and don't let your DS use it again unless they protect it. You were all lucky it was £4 tbh..............

boatyardblues · 29/03/2018 19:02

Agree to pay the £4, but on the basis that it’s the one and only time, that your son has shown he’s capable of going rogue on an unattended device as you warned & if they let him do it again, it’s on them. Hopefully he’ll buy a car or a pricy holiday somewhere crap nect time. Grin

howrudeforme · 29/03/2018 19:03

Neither you nor the GPs want to be out of pocket for the mistake of a two year old?

BlueSapp · 29/03/2018 19:04

YANBU how stupid to not have it password protected, I mean it’s 2018 catch on!

RadioGaGoo · 29/03/2018 19:05

What if he had dropped the tablet when unsupervised? Who would have paid then?
