For not paying for my sons mistake

Hello,
My son and I were at my DM and DF house today and my DM left my DS unattended on their tablet while I was in the bathroom. My DS accidentally purchased £4 worth of game coins (he's 2 so didn't know what he was doing!). I was talking my DF through how to claim the money back and he said 'or we could just get the money back from you guys' I said 'no, you are the ones silly enough to leave him unattended on a unprotected tablet after I've told you not too' he just said 'well he's your son.' My phone then started to ring so that was conversation over. I know it's only £4 but AIBU for refusing to pay it after I have shown them how to password protect it, and warned a few times not to leave him unattended on it (and he could claim the money back via the app but wants to keep the game coins for free, without the hassle of talking to android) I don't have the best relationship with DF so not sure if I'm just being petty!

Jesus wept, I’d have to live to be about 180 before my life would be long enough to give this any head space.

Puffycat · 30/03/2018 02:13

£4 is clearly not the issue
This goes far deeper than I can even contemplate at this time
You did this!you did that!it was your responsibility !no it was yours! who’s tablet was it, who’s kid is it, you never loved me, you never showed us any respect lalalalala ad nauseum
I actually stopped bothering about my typing half way through that because IT DOSNT MATTER!

NualaCassia · 30/03/2018 02:38

This isn’t just about the £4 though is it.

This is about op’s parents being told not to let the dc unattended on the tablet but doing it anyway and then trying to blame op for their own mistake.

I wonder if everyone would say the OP is being petty if it was £40 worth of coins?

I wouldn’t pay op. You are paying them for childcare, they should be providing childcare, not letting him unattended on a tablet when you’ve advised them against it.

Whyarealltheusernamestaken · 30/03/2018 02:39

I would pay, family is worth more than money and I would feel responsible for my child. I would also restrict access to iPads though, or at least ones requiring internet access

CommanderDaisy · 30/03/2018 03:19

A two year old on a iPad? With internet access?
You're lucky he didn't access some porn .

EasterRobin · 30/03/2018 03:54

Surely he should just get a refund from the App Store. If he can't get a refund, then this is a reasonable discussion to have.

ThumbWitchesAbroad · 30/03/2018 06:15

Be warned OP - next time you write an AIBU about this, make it a substantial amount of money so you don't get everyone wittering on about it being "only £4" - it's not only £4, it's the principle as well, but most people have got hung up on the tiny amount of money involved.

MrsPicklesonSmythe · 30/03/2018 06:29

I’d give them a fiver and book childcare from next week onwards if it costs the same abywat. Couldn’t be doing with all that pettiness.

MrsPicklesonSmythe · 30/03/2018 06:30

Why would it correct anyway to abywat?! It’s not even a word!

joystir59 · 30/03/2018 07:08

Do you really want a family feud over £4?

Lweji · 30/03/2018 07:27

@HuskyMcClusky

Jesus wept, I’d have to live to be about 180 before my life would be long enough to give this any head space.

So, do tell us your secret of longevity. Because, here you are posting about it...

stressedoutfred · 30/03/2018 09:23

I think I'd pay as it's only £4 but I'd be really shocked if my parents behaved in that way!

Op had told them it needed password protecting, how is she then responsible if whilst they're in charge of the DC he ends up with a game charge?!

QueenArseClangers · 30/03/2018 10:55

Your parents sound right odd fuckers.
Tell us more about the childcare arrangement you have with them.

squeezylemons · 30/03/2018 17:35

I’m sure this has been said but you have no chance of getting your money back from the app.

Jeepy · 30/03/2018 17:41

Pay £2 each and password protect it yourself?

PlumsGalore · 30/03/2018 17:42

I think you should pay up, I appreciate they were doing the minding but sometimes older people don’t understand how easy it is for minors to access chargeable apps and games. My parents didn’t even know how expensive the speaking clock was until I told them, I think they thought it free!

If this were one of my children I would gently explain how easy it is to run up these costs hence keeping the iPad out of reach then leave them the money.

I can’t believe you told them how to claim it back, rather than stump up, I am cringing.

DagenhamRoundhouse · 30/03/2018 17:43

Sorry but how can a 2 year old purchase £4 worth of game coins?

LLO7 · 30/03/2018 17:47

Thanks again for comments. Just to say again we didn't actually 'fall out' over it at all! DF claimed the money back this morning and that's the end of that Smile

OP posts:
LLO7 · 30/03/2018 17:50

@squeezylemons you can usually claim back from apps if a purchase was made by a child as it was made by someone underage without the bill payers permission- obviously you can't take the P and do it regularly though!

OP posts:
Aridane · 30/03/2018 17:50

I sort of get where DF is coming from. You’re boring him into submission on passwirds, reclaiming via app and speaking with android, blah, blah, blah, and he says, hey, you could just give me the £4

Viviennemary · 30/03/2018 17:51

YABU. You should cough up the money and be grateful you have grandparents who look after your son. Oh you were there as well. Pay up and take responsibility for your own child.

Smudge100 · 30/03/2018 17:52

Sounds as if they knew how to password protect it but didn't bother. I'd be concerned about them leaving such a young child unattended as well. Sounds as if they are a bit sloppy in their habits.

Mynewnameforabit · 30/03/2018 17:56

I’d give them a fiver and book childcare from next week onwards
The DC was not left with the GPs in a childcare arrangement tho, the OP just popped to the loo! Sounds like there was a bit of confusion over who was keeping an eye on him, and thats the thing to maybe clarify in a similar situation (the iPad purchase was harmless, but it could have been rummaging in a kitchen cupboard)

Ivygarden · 30/03/2018 17:56

Christ almighty! Pay the £4 and move on!

squeezylemons · 30/03/2018 17:56

@LOL If that is the case then I stand corrected. From my experience it’s hard to determine whether it was made by a child or not. My friends son, age 5 at the time spent £79.50 and was unable to claim back. My kids keep bloody pressing the subscription on you tube, £4.99, never been able to claim back. Also heard similar stories from my place of work. There have been quite a few people who have taken their stories to the papers, still no refund.
