To quote Bastille, 'the world's gone mad' ...

White privilege... really? In schools??!

I don't really know much about race relations in a British Columbia so don't feel qualified to comment on this poster.

ScreamingLevitation · 10/03/2018 23:22

'a' is a typo

YassQueen · 10/03/2018 23:23
  1. It's Canada.

  2. Yes, how dare schools make children aware of racism and privilege.

kubex · 10/03/2018 23:25

@stellenbosch I'm guessing you are white?

NorthEndGal · 10/03/2018 23:25

As a Canadian, I say "Thanks Trudeau "HmmBlush

I have never voted Liberal or Conservative, and the NDP only got my vote when Jack was at the helm.
But I'm one of 6 that votes for the Greens....Grin

PaperdollCartoon · 10/03/2018 23:27

White privilege is a thing. We should be aware of it. Yes children should be taught about racism and privilege from a young age, I don’t get your issue?

Not a fan of the wording of this particular poster though

NotACleverName · 10/03/2018 23:27

I'm not seeing the issue.

Guavaf1sh · 10/03/2018 23:28

Entirely agree OP - the world is indeed mad. I hate this nonsense talk about white privilege and that such a poster is in a public place is totally unacceptable

Pereie · 10/03/2018 23:30

Why is it mad? You don't think white privilege is a thing? Or are you too privileged to notice or care?

It's great that this is an open conversation in schools.

AjasLipstick · 10/03/2018 23:30

Are you denying that people of colour have fewer advantages OP??

Snowbelled · 10/03/2018 23:30

Of course white privilege exists. And it should be taught. But that is a shite poster.

Snowbelled · 10/03/2018 23:31

I have to admit that anyone that uses the phrase 'gone mad is usually a bit if a twat so you lost me straight away.

toomanyweeds · 10/03/2018 23:32

I really don't see the problem?

Guavaf1sh · 10/03/2018 23:33

People have advantages for all kinds of issues but a colourblind approach is best. Blanket blaming white people is racist as well and does not serve the cause of racial equality one bit.

Deadwood58 · 10/03/2018 23:33

I think it's especially important in a country like Canada that has an indigenous population that is so much less privileged than the rest of the country, both economically and in terms of the terrifying murder rate of young indigenous women.

stellenbosch · 10/03/2018 23:33

What about ppl from poor backgrounds, that have gone through shit and worked their way up, so their kids can have a better life. But, cos they are white, they are privileged somehow?

So people who are white have to be ashamed of their skin colour? Niiice

IfyouseeRitaMoreno · 10/03/2018 23:36

Yeah it’s a rubbish poster. Way too preachy and will probably backfire as people get defensive when made to feel guilty.

I’d say there were better ways to teach. Don’t tell people they have have wp, show them. Some examples would have been better.

entropynow · 10/03/2018 23:36

@Gvuavaf1sh

You don't in fact know what 'white privilege' is, do you? Please do the research before making ignorant comments like yours have been.

kubex · 10/03/2018 23:37

@stellenbosch you obviously have zero understanding of privilege, white or otherwise.

blackteasplease · 10/03/2018 23:38

I'm not totallt sure it's the best wording possible but it's a good idea. I'd have used a white man I think to make it a stronger more clear cut point. I also hope there's one with man saying "I've benefited unfairly as a result of my sex" if we are going to talk

OutyMcOutface · 10/03/2018 23:38

Maybe race is more important incanda than ur is here?

Stillscreaming · 10/03/2018 23:38

So people who are white have to be ashamed of their skin colour? Niiice

It wouldn't be nice at all if anyone said that. It's a good job they didn't.

blackteasplease · 10/03/2018 23:39

I also agree examples are better than a flat statement like this.
