Candle

Would I be very unreasonable to buy myself a Jo Malone candle? A few years ago my niece gave me one for Christmas and I lit it whenever I needed to cheer myself up. However I am in my seventies, on a pension and have to budget for treats and my dh thinks that any old scented candle would do. I really loved that JM candle though.
I have promised not to use savings but it is my birthday in March and I think I can save £50 by then. WIBU?

Could you ask family members to get you one instead? The Lily Flame ones are only £10 each but look lovely and smell just as strong as the Jo Malone ones

Insomnibrat · 01/01/2018 08:52

Life is full of endless, relentless crushing disappointments and hard work.

Get the candle!

piefacedClique · 01/01/2018 08:54

It’s a lovely treat but the Aldi versions smell almost identical. So you could have almost the same thing for £4. What scent did you have? They do lime, basil and mandarin, pomegranate noir and blackberry bay. I buy their Reid diffusers and pour it in to an old jo malone Reid diffuser bottle and no one is any the wiser.

thegreylady · 01/01/2018 08:59

It was the pomegranate noir one. I know I could get a cheap version but it wouldn’t feel the same. I might try the Aldi one. I just love the look of the JM and the glass holder and the black lid! I might ask dd though for my birthday it just seems too expensive to ask someone else.

I’ll go against the grain and say nothing but the Jo Malone candle will do.
It lasts me about a year. I keep one in my bedroom which happens to be my happy calm retreat space. Often I just come fom work, have a shower, make a coffee, lit a candle in my bedroom and just spend some time on my own. It’s magic!

STBXH always had a go at my expensive taste in candles (wasting money). My now DP said nothing but bought me (us) a gorgeous one this Christmas and has joined me in basking in a bit of calm by the candlelight and often remarks just hiw lovely it smells and what an amazing atmosphere it creates.
Get one, OP!

My friend bought me a Jo Malone candle two years ago and I’m mourning its passing!! It was the Wood Sage & Sea Salt one.

I’ve tried loads of others in an attempt not to spend £50 on a candle but they’re all very pale imitations.

Save the money, and ask your DD. Cover all bases!

Colouringoutsidethelines · 01/01/2018 09:07

I wish I we could all somehow donate a tiny amount of money that cumulatively could buy you the candle. This thread reminds me of the importance of asking people if there’s anything they would appreciate for Christmas Xmas Sad

Op

You get the candle

And I'll get myself another of those gorgeous JM diffuser things that my SIL bought me a few years ago.

Been waiting for an excuse

With all the cheaper ones I've tried I may as well have just bought it.

Enjoy it

thegreylady · 01/01/2018 09:13

Just shown dh (aged 81) this thread and his response was,”Order the bloody candle now! If I’d known how much you wanted one I’d have got one for you. Don’t wait till March we might both be dead by then!”
Thanks dh I think 🙂

Oh bless op. If it's not going to leave you hard done by then definitely get the candle. Everyone deserves a treat once in a while.

Taffeta · 01/01/2018 09:21

Maybe if you buy it direct from the JM website you’ll get some free samples?

WorldWideWanderer · 01/01/2018 09:23

Glad you're going to get it - there is nothing better than Jo Malone, treat yourself, they really are worth it. As I am sure so are you....

LML83 · 01/01/2018 09:23

it's a treat, but you know it's worth it to you and you will enjoy it. And now dh is on board, enjoy!

KenAdams · 01/01/2018 09:27

Get it from Jo Malone as you'll get samples.

I must say I prefer Miller Harris though so have a look at them next time.

PoorYorick · 01/01/2018 09:27

Your husband rocks Smile

I understand the need for something that actually IS expensive, even if the cheaper version supposedly smells the same. It's not just the candle, it's the experience and feeling like it's a luxury. When I got my first job I wanted to buy a piece of jewellery that was relatively expensive for me at the time....I knew I could get a much cheaper, imitation necklace that looked just as pretty but I wanted the real and dearer one.

Happy new year to you both!

Rosti1981 · 01/01/2018 09:28

Awww I'm so glad you are getting this, and I think you're right to buy the real deal.

If you want cheaper ones at other points in the year, the Aldi one is lovely too though, should you want to give it a whirl. It's lasted ages and is in a glass jar with metal lid, the smell isn't quite as "deep" as the JM original but I have two and it still feels treaty to light them! I've had the Blackberry and bay (no 2), and the lime/basil/mandarin (no 1) ones and both were lovely.

But I do think you completely do right to push the boat out too and get the real deal!

zen1 · 01/01/2018 09:28

Glad you’re getting your candle OP Smile

Oh2beatsea · 01/01/2018 09:31

Life is for living.....have no regrets OP. Buy the candle and enjoy every single moment. Report back when you’ve got it / lit it. Grin

ValentineFizz · 01/01/2018 09:33

Absolutely get the candle OP and enjoy it, life is way too short not to!

Hastalapasta · 01/01/2018 09:33

Enjoy your candle! Have a wonderful new year tooGrin
