Would I be very unreasonable to buy myself a Jo Malone candle? A few years ago my niece gave me one for Christmas and I lit it whenever I needed to cheer myself up. However I am in my seventies, on a pension and have to budget for treats and my dh thinks that any old scented candle would do. I really loved that JM candle though.
I have promised not to use savings but it is my birthday in March and I think I can save £50 by then. WIBU?

Ah this thread........ beautiful.

Op I hope your candle brings you so much joy, maybe worth asking for a cheeky voucher for your birthday? Then you could put something toward the cost of a second.

I'd totally buy you a candle!

SilverBirchTree · 01/01/2018 12:00

This thread is the best

thecatfromjapan · 01/01/2018 12:03

Enjoy the candle!

I love (expensive) True Grace and am planning on buying one as a Post-Christmas-Present-From-Me-To-Me. And I am NOT going to feel guilty. I'll think of you, grey, when I'm burning it.

(And St Eval are indeed fabulous too.)

Happy New Year and I hope you really enjoy your new candle.

It is amazing how a candle can really make you happy. Two years ago I bought a Christmas candle called Jingle Bells by Sebnini - it was only £5 from TK Maxx, but it is heaven in a tin and really made our Christmas smell magical. This year I managed to find 2 more them, so i bought one for this year and one for next. I was so happy.

Great thread.

ptumbi · 01/01/2018 12:08

A lovely thread - BUT -

I wish I we could all somehow donate a tiny amount of money that cumulatively could buy you the candle. - please don;t do this. I'm sure the OP is real, but some aren't. Don't EVER give money over the internet to someone you don't know.

MNHQ say the same.

I hope you enjoy your candle OP.

misscheery · 01/01/2018 12:08

you sound lovely, OP, as does your DH! Enjoy your candle, and have a wonderful year ahead! ❤️

APlaceAtTheBSDTable · 01/01/2018 12:13

Enjoy your candle OP.

JammyGem · 01/01/2018 12:15

Ah this thread is so lovely... I'm not crying, honest!

Glad that you're going for it OP. I went to TK Maxx yesterday and bought some DW Home candles - because we all deserve to treat ourselves every now and then Smile

Ginkypig · 01/01/2018 12:25

This thread is just lovely.

Happy new year grey enjoy your new candle.

Please do post a picture when it arrives.

LBOCS2 · 01/01/2018 12:27

Lovely thread - and your DH is lovely.

I have an embarrassing amount of my personal wealth in candles and the Jo Malone ones are fantastic. I have the Aldi knock offs and they're fine for everyday burning they aren't anything like as good as the JM ones. The Aldi blackberry and bay has the best scent throw by a long shot, I don't really rate the other two so much.

poddige · 01/01/2018 12:32

The pomegranate Noir one from Aldi won't break the bank to try it. And if it doesn't cut the mustard, save up!

BigSandyBalls2015 · 01/01/2018 12:36

You sound lovely OP and so does your DH. I'd love to buy it for you.

poddige · 01/01/2018 12:38

Oh I was so behind be times with my comment. Enjoy op!

IrkThePurist · 01/01/2018 12:38

Lovely thread thegreylady - and its been useful. I didn't know how to look after a candle before I read this thread, and didnt realise there would be fakes online Blush

sonyaya · 01/01/2018 13:11

So pleased you’ve ordered it OP! I also love Jo Malone, day on day I use the Aldi ones because of the cost of the Jo Malone and save the Jo Malone one (and the white company one) for when we have guests. You’ve reminded me that life is too short, and tonight I’ll burn my Jo Malone and enjoy it!

Also thanks to the poster for the trimming the wick advice. Mine always pool in the middle.

thegreylady · 01/01/2018 13:27

Ptumbi I would never accept actual money from strangers but I have accepted the voucher. I am going to order it in the next few days and will post a pic when it arrives. I am neither rich nor poor it just seems like such an indulgence so close to Christmas. I am very grateful to all who have offered such kindness.

What a lovely thread.

Happy new year everyone and start the new year with your new gorgus candle Smile

Liverbird77 · 01/01/2018 14:25

Do it! Also, if she can afford it, ask your daughter for one for your birthday too...I would happily buy one for my mum if it's what she wanted...she's done plenty for me!

Reallycantbebothered · 01/01/2018 14:34

Candles are my luxury to myself since being diagnosed with a serious chronic life changing illness this last year. I spent most of October and November in bed before starting horrible treatment
However I bought some gorgeous White Company tea lights in pomegranate and winter to burn over Christmas and they give me such pleasure , even when it is miserable, cold and stormy outside
I als got some gorgeous Jo Malone bath oil for Christmas which I will be using once I am able to soak in the bath again which I'm hoping will be very soon, once my wounds have healed
You only live once, so enjoy your candle

lidoshuffle · 01/01/2018 14:41

Can anyone tell me if the Jo Malone and White Company candles are vegetable or petrochemical wax please? I haven't seen anything on the internet to suggest they aren't petrochemical but maybe I'm looking in the wrong place.

pasanda · 01/01/2018 16:31

Lovely thread Smile

But can someone please tell me why you should trim the wick before you light it? I've never heard of that before.

19lottie82 · 01/01/2018 16:55

No need to trim it before you first Light it, but after he first light, is the wick is longer than 5mm then trim it, otherwise you will find a large flame and sometimes black smoke.

I use nail clippers!

DramaAlpaca · 01/01/2018 16:59

What a lovely thread.

Enjoy your candle OP.

Rebeccaslicker · 01/01/2018 17:27

Pasanda - to make it last longer! A longer wick will burn far more quickly and your lovely candle will disappear.
