Candle

Would I be very unreasonable to buy myself a Jo Malone candle? A few years ago my niece gave me one for Christmas and I lit it whenever I needed to cheer myself up. However I am in my seventies, on a pension and have to budget for treats and my dh thinks that any old scented candle would do. I really loved that JM candle though.
I have promised not to use savings but it is my birthday in March and I think I can save £50 by then. WIBU?

Op, there's a lot of new ones on Ebay half that price, unwanted gifts from Christmas.

ItsNiceItsDifferentItsUnusual · 01/01/2018 09:38

So pleased you're doing it! Sounds like it will be really appreciated.

I have a diptique one which I bought pre dc when we could afford such things. I never lit it and now it's 5 years old and doesn't even smell. Don't be a twat like me Angry

liminality · 01/01/2018 09:38

Also, probably worth letting people know that generally always your preferred gift going forward is JM candles. Lots of people agonise over what to get people, especially older people who generally have everything they need already. Do them and you a favour and spread the word!

HLBug · 01/01/2018 09:40

OP, life is for the living - enjoy your candle and Happy New Year to you and your DH Smile

Viviennemary · 01/01/2018 09:41

I think you should try the Aldi one first. And if it's not as good then definitely go for the Jo Malone one. But why should you. No. go for the Jo Malone. See you've decided. Well done.

TatianaLarina · 01/01/2018 09:42

You can pick them up slightly cheaper on eBay from people who’ve been given them and don’t want them:

this for example

meandmytinfoilhat · 01/01/2018 09:42

Go for it OP. Aldi do their own version but it's not the same.

AtrociousCircumstance · 01/01/2018 09:42

Reading your DH’s response really touched me! You both sound lovely.

Enjoy the gorgeous candle.

TatianaLarina · 01/01/2018 09:43

I sold a whole set on eBay last year - candle, shower gel etc.

Hullabaloo40 · 01/01/2018 09:47

I love your husbands beautiful response. He knows that if it makes you that happy it's worth it. Give him a big hug from all us mumsnetters.

Beakyplinders · 01/01/2018 09:51

Yay to you and your DH!

I love Jo Malone candles, you can't beat them IMO. I have the aldi knock offs as well as the real deal and whilst they smell almost identical they aren't the same and nor are they as strong smelling so I completely understand why you wanted to treat yourself.

tabbywabby · 01/01/2018 09:52

Get the candle! Absolutely. You would be unreasonable not to. Happy New Year, OP and enjoy your candle - you deserve it.

(And your DH's response made my eyes mist up a bit. I must be going soft)

Willswife · 01/01/2018 09:52

So pleased you're getting the candle. Agree with others who say get it direct from JM (or go to one of their stores), as you get free samples.

I only discovered the joys of JM this year, I've never been into candles before but I love them!

Enjoy!

KitKat1985 · 01/01/2018 09:53

I'm glad you're ordering your candle OP. Smile

Dragonfree · 01/01/2018 09:58

I don't know if this message will be "allowed" as it may be supporting advertising.

I'm going to risk it (sorry MNHQ if I'm breaking rules).

I love Jo Malone candles, but can't really afford them though. I have found an awesome substitute though through a company called Aflame.

They will send you scent samples and their range is amazing.

Dragonfree · 01/01/2018 10:00

I like Heaven Scent, the one in a bucket.

I'll see if I can work out how to copy a link from my favourites.

insancerre · 01/01/2018 10:00

Love your husbands response
I'd be tempted to buy 2 candles and sod the expense

SilverBirchTree · 01/01/2018 10:00

Good for you OP. I wish I could send you a candle.

Dragonfree · 01/01/2018 10:01

Here it is.

www.aflamecandles.co.uk/

I'm hoping it's allowed as I'm not trying to advertise, just help direct to people to candles which are less expensive than Jo Malone but are (in my opinion) as good.

Dragonfree · 01/01/2018 10:03

Oops.... Thread has moved on.

Cancel the cheque... Blush

Aspergallus · 01/01/2018 10:08

Aww, this reminds me of that Erma Bombeck poem. Buy the candle and burn it, no regrets!

If I Had My Life To Live Over

by Erma Bombeck

If I had my life to live over, I would have talked less and listened more.

I would have invited friends over to dinner even if the carpet was stained and the sofa faded.

I would have eaten the popcorn in the 'good' living room and worried much less about the dirt when someone wanted to light a fire in the fireplace.

I would have taken the time to listen to my grandfather ramble about his youth.

I would never have insisted the car windows be rolled up on a summer day because my hair had just been teased and sprayed.

I would have burned the pink candle sculpted like a rose before it melted in storage.

I would have sat on the lawn with my children and not worried about grass stains.

I would have cried and laughed less while watching television - and more while watching life.

I would have shared more of the responsibility carried by my husband.

I would have gone to bed when I was sick instead of pretending the earth would go into a holding pattern if I weren't there for the day.

I would never have bought anything just because it was practical, wouldn't show soil or was guaranteed to last a lifetime.

Instead of wishing away nine months of pregnancy, I'd have cherished every moment and realized that the wonderment growing inside me was the only chance in life to assist God in a miracle.

When my kids kissed me impetuously, I would never have said, "Later. Now go get washed up for dinner."

There would have been more "I love you's".. More "I'm sorrys" ...

But mostly, given another shot at life, I would seize every minute... look at it and really see it ... live it...and never give it back.

Oh I hope you enjoy that candle! Good on your DH, I am warm and fuzzy now.

NorksAreMessy · 01/01/2018 11:04

Yes!

Buy the candle and actually BURN it, eat off the good China, wear your ‘best’ clothes, treat yourself to flowers, spray the perfume, use up the lovely bath oil...ENJOY the tiny pleasures in life.

Hebenon · 01/01/2018 11:06

Hope you enjoy your candle, OP! And get another when you have finished it!

Iamagreyhoundhearmeroar · 01/01/2018 11:07

Your DH is a diamond!
