Candle

Would I be very unreasonable to buy myself a Jo Malone candle? A few years ago my niece gave me one for Christmas and I lit it whenever I needed to cheer myself up. However I am in my seventies, on a pension and have to budget for treats and my dh thinks that any old scented candle would do. I really loved that JM candle though.
I have promised not to use savings but it is my birthday in March and I think I can save £50 by then. WIBU?

I bought a giant Jo Malone candle in Orange Bitters last Christmas. It was very limited addition and I was lucky to get one at all - I burn it almost daily and it's still going... I absolutely love it and it brings me so much joy.

I'm glad you're going ahead with the purchase but I second buying it from JM directly.

If you can get to a boutique and tell them this story they may even throw in extra nice things :)

Did you order it yet @thegreylady ? I have a £5 John Lewis voucher you can put towards it! I rarely shop there so you're welcome to it

thegreylady · 01/01/2018 11:24

Are you sure? I would be very grateful but don’t deprive yourself or any of your family. Thank you so much for offering it and don’t worry if you think of another use for it. I am waiting till 5/1 to order as that is dh’s Pension day.

Just looked on eBay and I can get it cheaper than J Lewis so will hope it is still there by the weekend.
Byallmeans you are truly lovely and I hope you can put your voucher towards something wonderful for yourself x(sorry)....

ByAllMeansMoveAtAGlacialPace · 01/01/2018 11:32

No problem!

TimeIhadaNameChange · 01/01/2018 11:34

What a lovely thread! So glad you're getting one. And the offer from 'ByAllMeans' is wonderful!

StillMissV · 01/01/2018 11:35

@thegreylady please be careful buying from eBay, lots on there can be fakes. I’d definitely buy from John Lewis or JM direct.

We always have a JM candle, they last ages and it’s our little luxury. They are divine. Enjoy x

Oh that poem Asper it is beautiful ..........

greylady enjoy your candle Smile and don't forget to trim your wick and when you first light it , ket it be long enough for the wax to melt evenly across the entire surface , not just a wax pool in the middle . I know it's tempting to only light for short bursts to save it , but if it 'tunnels' (melts in the middle not the edges) you lose a lot of burn hours.

I wanted a Limited Edition candle this year but couldn't justify it so I bought a Yankee from Asda and hate it Xmas Sad Feel like kicking it across the bathroom (it is lit in the loo so not wasted , just not enjoyed)

thegreylady · 01/01/2018 11:39

Oh heck it looks right I used the link. They are asking £34.99 before Post and packing so it works out just over £40 which is what the lovely Byallmeans’ voucher would have been from JL. I feel really bad accepting the voucher. Please look at the link for me and tell me if it looks ok.

I have a small red roses one that we've only lit once if you'd like that as well? It's a lovely scent but we have birds and a toddler so we realised it wasn't the best idea in the world :) PM me if you'd like me to post it to you.

Love jo malone - I got perfume and the bath oil from my lovely MIL this Christmas!

ByAllMeansMoveAtAGlacialPace · 01/01/2018 11:41

You're very welcome to it. Honestly, I won it in a work raffle so it's no loss to me.

thegreylady · 01/01/2018 11:42

Thank you Rebecca the vipers on Mumsnet must hibernate as I have only found kindness here.

Ah nice New Year's Day thread. Glad you're getting the candle OP, you sound like you deserve it!

19lottie82 · 01/01/2018 11:45

Aldi versions smell almost identical.

Sorry but that’s nonsense and I have both.

The scent may be similar but it’s no where near as strong and the candle doesn’t last as long.

thegreylady · 01/01/2018 11:45

Byallmeans I have messaged you

Enjoy your candle OP, so nice to read a lovely story on MN.

MatildaTheCat · 01/01/2018 11:52

For all candle lovers please check out St EvalThey are devine and extremely economical.

I was given the exact JM candle for Christmas and am hoping to take it back to exchange it for bath oil. Somehow I can’t stand burning £50 notes! Grin

Iamagreyhoundhearmeroar · 01/01/2018 11:53

Lovely thread 🙂

Fintress · 01/01/2018 11:53

I love the Sensuality St Eval candle. Off to hunt for one!

MrsPringles · 01/01/2018 11:55

The Aldi Pomegranate is not a patch on JM (which is my all time favourite smell)

Treat yourself, get the candle if it makes you happy Flowers

Papergirl1968 · 01/01/2018 11:55

Ahh, this is a nice thread. Op’s Dh, Rebecca and Byallmeans all sound lovely.

Glumglowworm · 01/01/2018 11:58
