Meghan and Harry don't look right together

I was in small shop earlier with only 4 of us in their. I am a regular customer.
I heard a member of staff who was serving another customer talking about Meghan and Harry and staff member said they don't really look right together and that she's not an English Rose like Kate Middleton. I was really shocked by this because 1) that people of my generation actually think like this (middle age) 2) that she admitted this view out loud knowing i could actually hear it (i'm not white). I was only 3 feet away.

AIBU to think that this was a racist comment and that most white people do not think like this ? Please restore my faith Mumsnet.

Well, as a poster on here said on a thread ‘he should have bought british’, I’m not surprised by anything much really.

I am mixed race (white and Caribbean) and look Mediterranean (people assume Spanish or Italian most of the time) and hear these comments all the time because people don't realise I'm black.

Quite bizarre to suggest she isn't like Kate. They look similar to me. In fact the fail ran an article in the last few days implying that pippa and Meghan were clones.

However I get a whiff of bullshit from them "oh we had never heard of each other before we were set up, I thought "prince" was just a common nickname amongst brits ha ha and he thought I SOLD suits in a discount store...we're totally un shallow and just like a regular couple"

I think they look like a couple, as do William and his wife. Prince Charles and Lady/Princess Diana didn't.

My next door neighbour said they same thing. It made me cringe.

Wouldn’t surprise me. I’m not British (white European) and was in a shop in England (not that it matters but a very posh wine shop) last year where the young (late 20s) shopkeeper used the phrase “half-caste” to describe someone to another customer. From his tone, he wasn’t being purposefully derogatory, it just seemed to be common parlance for him. I was shocked.

When I asked him why he’d said that, he was aghast that I thought there was anything wrong with it.

I generally find the British, English in particular, quite racist. Not always blatant, but low-key remarks.

2. People are entitled to their own opinion about whether they look "right" together, whatever that means.

There’s a Disneyesque stereotype deeply engrained into many peoples’ consciousnesses. We have been programmed to expect a certain outcome. Commenting that something is not as you expected doesn’t make you racist. Closed-minded perhaps.

What looks wrong about them is the ridiculous anachronism of royalty in the 21st century. The race thing, on the other hand, really isn't a bloody problem!

I don't see it as a racist comment at all, just an abservation that she doesn't fit into the stereotype "princess" look or type. Judging by his previous GFs and the wives of other royals, gorgeous as she is she's breaking the mould I think. Nothing wrong with that and nothing racist about it either IMHO.

I'm not surprised, I see this view very often. I'm white, DH is Bengali and the amount of people I've met who are 'shocked' he isn't white is just stupid. There will be little englanders thinking and saying this about Meghan.

I'm a republican and not a fan of the royal family but good on Harry for not giving a stuff about this, I think in this day and age its really sad that it is still an issue for some people. And there babies will of course be beautiful ☺

I think she's really quite beautiful. I also think she looks very like the Middleton sisters.

Of course they are right for each other. Why on earth would they not be. I do feel she knew who he was and he knew he was. From that end of things (but not a bad thing.. They both are famous in their own way)

I have a similar skin tone to Meghan and my partner is gingery and very white, I think we look great together and our kids are gorgeous! I think Meghan and Harry look beautiful together.

All that matters is that he has found someone to love and who loves him who can begin to help him heal the pain of losing his mother at such a young age. Who she is or what her ethnic back ground is, is irrelevant. I do think it challenges prejudice on many levels which is great!
