Meghan and Harry don't look right together

I was in small shop earlier with only 4 of us in their. I am a regular customer.
I heard a member of staff who was serving another customer talking about Meghan and Harry and staff member said they don't really look right together and that she's not an English Rose like Kate Middleton. I was really shocked by this because 1) that people of my generation actually think like this (middle age) 2) that she admitted this view out loud knowing i could actually hear it (i'm not white). I was only 3 feet away.

AIBU to think that this was a racist comment and that most white people do not think like this ? Please restore my faith Mumsnet.

The only ones who are being negative are chavs.

It wasn't a chav who said it.

I wouldn't really assume that racist tbh. Even if you are a racist Meghan doesn't really look mixed race, she's very light skinned

But no, no normal person thinks like that

MikeUniformMike · 04/12/2017 19:04

I should add, I understand the term and know that people are ok with the term, but would prefer mixed ethnic origin as a term.

DeadGood · 04/12/2017 19:04

“Is Kate Middleton an English Rose? I've never really worked out what that meant, I thought it meant pretty but in a pale kind of mousy way?...”

Agree, Kate M isn’t an ‘english rose’ - she is just English. People just like using the terminology without stopping to think about what it actually means.

I’d agree that it’s a young lady with a clear, fair complexion, fair (not necessarily blonde) hair, rosy cheeks.

Whoever said Sandra Bullock could be described as an English Rose - what on earth are you talking about??

GingerbreadMa · 04/12/2017 19:05

"I don't think that Sandra Bullock looks like an English rose."

I think she does. Pale blushing girl next door. Not too sexy but pretty with european "good hair"

To me the english rose look = the snow white look.

GingerbreadMa · 04/12/2017 19:05

Red cheeks and lips and pale skin

SilverySurfer · 04/12/2017 19:07

Pathetic and Kate isn't an ''English Rose'.

goldenclaire · 04/12/2017 19:08

How can anyone judge the relationship of a couple who they do not know in person? And quite frankly what business is it of theirs in the first place?

Aeroflotgirl · 04/12/2017 19:08

Why, because she is not white British woman, like Princess Di and Kate Middleton. That does not sit right because it does have racist undertones about it.

Whiterabbitears · 04/12/2017 19:08

I think Kate Winslet playing Mariette in Sense and Sensibility is a classic English rose.

GingerbreadMa · 04/12/2017 19:08

Kate isnt an english rose her cheeks arent full/plump/youthful/blushing enough

MsHarry · 04/12/2017 19:09

Crikey what a thing to say. I am white and 'middle aged' I guess at 46ShockI think she is a breath of fresh air and has wonderful qualities quite aside from her good looks.

Bubblebubblepop · 04/12/2017 19:09

English Rose is pale, blondish, high cheekbones and blue eyes.

Bubble "Even if you are a racist Meghan doesn't really look mixed race, she's very light skinned "

my skin is fairer than Meghan's and yes, I experience racism too. I get peered at a lot before people make comments.

I totally see this as a racist comment OP.

Bubblebubblepop · 04/12/2017 19:10

SORRY POSted too soon. Quite kate mossy. Google images brings back that look over and over for English Rose

HildasStockings · 04/12/2017 19:11

She's stunning, bright and a humanitarian. He's a lucky boy and they seem smitten. Have heard a few choice comments though, from the older generation. My in-laws exclaimed, in a horrified way that they 'could have a black baby'.

My MIL claims she (Meghan) 'will be trouble' but couldn't back this up with anything other than 'a feeling'.

MikeUniformMike · 04/12/2017 19:11

Ginge, are you from this planet?

kamarastar · 04/12/2017 19:11

Yes, it is racist, especially in ear shot of you not being white. Sounds an intentional comment to make you feel uncomfortable. But, they do look great together, and it's wonderful Harry has stuck two fingers up to the status quo and gone with his heart, which is great for all us free thinking people.

StrangeLookingParasite · 04/12/2017 19:13

Bert and Ernie are orange and yellow and have looked right together for 48 years.

That woman is more of a muppet than they are.

What she said.

I do think many Indians have good hair genes - does that make me racist?

derxa · 04/12/2017 19:13

I object to the 'English' part of it.

SenecaFalls · 04/12/2017 19:13

I should add, I understand the term and know that people are ok with the term, but would prefer mixed ethnic origin as a term.

That would be confusing to Americans. Ethnicity and race are separate concepts in the US. "Mixed ethnic origin" could mean someone with an Irish-American father and an Italian American mother.

Mummyoflittledragon · 04/12/2017 19:13

Good on harry for finding someone he loves. I think her heritage is immaterial.

My only reservation is an article I read earlier, where an ex very good friend described how she is strategic and cold. How she got rid of her ex husband cruelly despite recent previous protestations that she’d be lost without him. The friend is an ex friend because of how Meghan behaved. Idk if it is true. But if true that sounds horrible. I could be smear. Or not. Who knows.

Nyx1 · 04/12/2017 19:15

kamara "Yes, it is racist, especially in ear shot of you not being white."

what I've also found is that some people who think like this assume I think this way - i.e. that people should not mix race/ethnic origin/whatever/ihatealltheterms - in their relationships.
