AIBU that people that rent shouldn't have pets

My friend is having to find another rented property but can't find anywhere that will accept pets, she's asked me to have her 2 dogs, I have 2 dogs already but they will have to be put down if I don't have them 😞 Why do people who rent have pets when this puts them in a difficult position. I can see a lot of dogs being put down as homes will be more difficult to find

Why will they be put down? Can't they be rehomed through a shelter or rescue?

I rent and have a cat. Landlord is fine with it, and we've lived in the same place for four years, so why shouldn't we have a cat?

Yes of course, renters are lower class citizens therefore why should they be allowed choices?

I have a cat and rent. Most landlords just ask for a pet deposit, we've never had a problem.

I rented for years with 2 dogs. Ok so a more limited pool of properties but apart from that I had no issues. Always got a deep clean done when we left.

They won't have to be put down.
If they are rescues then go back to the rescue.
If pedigrees then go back to the breeder.
We waited to get anything more than a hamster until we owned our house. Not everyone will end up buying though.

I'm quite surprised that you actually have a friend. Did you tell her that renters shouldn't have pets? What did she say?

We have four cats and have rented our current house for nearly 9 years with no complaints from our landlord. YABU. But the issue here is the guilt trip from your friend, not renters having pets.

Your friend needs to put them in a shelter or rehoming environment. Not your circus and all that jazz.

The issue is (and another thread here made me think of this) that assuming you get your pet as a kitten or puppy, their lifespan may translate across two decades and things can change dramatically in that time. I don't rent, but soon will be doing so (although I will be keeping my house) and I won't be rehoming my cats (as if!) but I do understand that situations can change extremely quickly.

It’s very difficult. Of course people should be free to own pets and if the LL accepts pets then that’s fine. But OP’s example is the issue faced by many, when the renters need to move they may find it impossible to find another LL willing to take their pets and will find their choice severely restricted or even end up having to rehome the animals. And that’s if they are lucky.

OP I feel for you but wouldn’t take the dogs if you don’t want to. It’s not a short term favour, it’s a massive big deal. Sadly it’s not your problem to fix.

Or maybe more landlords should allow pets? I have a dog and rent and never had an issue. Stop making stupid sweeping declarations.

The problem isn't renters with animals. It's snobby landlords who won't allow animals. Landlords that do accept animals usually take an extra deposit for any damage but let's face it, often children can do more damage than animals can. We were asked to pay an increased rent of £100 a month for my dog. Ridiculous!

I can kind of see the point your making but unfortunately you can’t really stop renters having pets, how would you even police such a thing.

Why will these dogs be put down? What kind of vet will do this? They will have to go to a dogs home and stay there for god knows how long which is cruel to the animal really, imagine leaving your home and being stuck in a dog kennels but nobody can foresee circumstances so it is what it is

People who have mortgages aren't necessarily safe from ending up homeless. So perhaps nobody should have pets unless they own their own property outright?

The Cinammon Trust may be able to help. They foster often for people in difficult circs. Sure there are other places that do too; putting them down seems extreme

I rent and would live on the streets before I had my dogs put down for no good reason, so yes yabu. Not everyone would just get them put to sleep if they had to move .
