My friend is having to find another rented property but can't find anywhere that will accept pets, she's asked me to have her 2 dogs, I have 2 dogs already but they will have to be put down if I don't have them 😞 Why do people who rent have pets when this puts them in a difficult position. I can see a lot of dogs being put down as homes will be more difficult to find

My brother had a flat in France. Agents let it out. Then he wanted to sell.

Took us all (with a few weeks hols it has to be said!) a good few weeks to sort the place out. Deposit not returned, no worries, tenant knew.

Honest to god, the place was manky. And the feckin smell. I will never ever ever forget that. Awful.

Some people just do not realise this, how they don't smell it themselves is beyond me. But anyway.

mustbemad17 · 23/11/2017 20:38

OC sometimes there are reasons, i give you. But many LLs say no kids regardless. Where i live it's probably easier to rent with a dog than it is a child 😂😂 shocking really

simonisnotme · 23/11/2017 20:38

In one way I don't blame landlords , pets can do damage and leave an aroma but it does mean that those with pets may struggle to get suitable housing.
My DS rents and his landlord has stated 'no pets' so he aims to buy as soon as they have a deposit saved so he will have his cats, lizards ect when they are sorted with a house and mortgage

dameglittersparkles · 23/11/2017 20:38

I have two dogs and my house is fucking immaculate. We are moving soon and my landlord is gutted to be losing us as tenants (his words)

mustbemad17 · 23/11/2017 20:39

Sometimes 'professional' people can ruin houses!! It's like there's a blanket ban on animals but nobody thinks of anything else. Believe me, i've seen houses of so called 'professionals' who don't give a shit about their places 🤢

cathyclown · 23/11/2017 20:40

Delete or Decay,

I know. But children are humans. And they will grow up.

PeiPeiPing · 23/11/2017 20:40

No CHILDREN?

Who doesn't allow children in their rental property? Confused

Let's ban also......

Disabled folk
Black people
Asian people
Goldfish
Blonde, blue eyed people
Ginger folk
Irish
Welsh
MPs
Doctors
Hairdressers
And of course anyone over 5 foot 6 inches tall.

Well, why not? Confused

Judydreamsofhorses · 23/11/2017 20:42

We’ve rented the same property for almost three years on a no-pets lease. In the summer we asked our landlord if she would give consideration to us adopting a cat - she was absolutely fine provided we deep clean the property at our own expense when we move out. We deliberately sought out an adult female and other than being very hairy, she is good as gold. I think the no-pets clause is standard but often landlords will accommodate pets within reason rather than lose good tenants/potentially have the property stand empty. (Slow market here right now.)

Lloyd45 · 23/11/2017 20:42

Maybe I should've renamed my thread as LL should be made to accept pets and children, this thread has enlightened me. I am an animal lover who hates to see so many animals waiting to be rehomed

I'm a Landlord and allow pets. Never been an issue and I have never thought anything of it. Never occurred to me to object, to be honest. Been a landlord 12 years, on 2nd set of tenants (first moved to Dubai otherwise would still be with us I assume). First set had a labrador and an alsatian and the second set have 3 cats and the cutest golden retriever I have ever met.

Degustibusnonestdisputandem1 · 23/11/2017 20:43

In Australia it's illegal to ban children from a rental property. I was astounded when I moved here to realise it was allowed. But then us renters are second class scum of course 🙄

PyongyangKipperbang · 23/11/2017 20:44

I can see the OP's point and it isnt, imo, about snobbery towards renters.

It can be a damn struggle to find a decent affordable rental at the best of times, why limit your options with pets when so many LL's refuse them? Its just making life harder for yourself.

Sure, sometimes circumstances change, but if you have only ever rented and are only ever likely to, it seems silly to get a pet in the full and certain knowledge that it will make finding your next home so much more difficult. And then there is the animal to consider, if it can be rehomed or put in a shelter, what other option is there other than having it PTS? How cruel to take on an animal knowing that that may one day have to happen.

And while many may not agree with LL's refusing pets, that is their right and renters know that. Apart from assistance animals, no pet is a necessity that couldnt be lived without.

mustbemad17 · 23/11/2017 20:44

Pei when i wanted to move i was turned down from several private rents because of my DD (then 3). I don't get how it isn't discrimination as many on your list, as you say, would be classed

mustbemad17 · 23/11/2017 20:45

There are very few things that are a neccessity in life. A sofa, a TV, a car. All enhance your life in a positive way.

PyongyangKipperbang · 23/11/2017 20:45

*if it can't be rehomed or put in a shelter.........

WitchesHatRim · 23/11/2017 20:47

But then us renters are second class scum of course

Well according to some on this thread landlords are scum too.

HateIsNotGood · 23/11/2017 20:48

Well. let's add another 'tier' to society - those that can freely have pets and those who can not. Include all if not most 'renters' as not being able to as that would be irresponsible? Ridiculous but so true. Mostly in the private sector of course; very few 'social' rented properties have a 'no pets' proviso.

Such a shame that many loving homes for the many animals that need them are unavailable because LL or EA says "no".

PyongyangKipperbang · 23/11/2017 20:49

A LL is going to look at this dispassionately, s/he doesnt care how much you love your dog!

All they know is that with pets in the house they might get pet related damage but with no pets, they definitely wont. From a business POV it makes sense to ban pets.

FizzyWaterAndElderflower · 23/11/2017 20:50

I rent out my house, and happily let tenants have pets (I suggest some good walks if it's a dog) - but my house is laminate throughout.

On the other hand, I once rented a flat in which the previous owner had had a dog, and one corner of one of the rooms stank (even though carpets had been cleaned - I found dog hair wedged down the edge of the carpet though, so perhaps not that well) - took us weeks to finally get rid of it enough to use the room - so I understand why landlords would be reluctant if burned in the past.

cathyclown · 23/11/2017 20:53

Pyong yang.

You said it right there. Get a good home for yourself first.

No way should a pet dictate where you can live. Can no one see that?

Ecureuil · 23/11/2017 20:55

A LL is going to look at this dispassionately, s/he doesnt care how much you love your dog!

Obviously not every LL thinks like you though, as we’ve rented plenty of places with our dog. Often left it in a better condition than we took it in, as we always paid for a deep clean/carpet cleaning etc.

mustbemad17 · 23/11/2017 20:55

But things change. Someone could have lived in the same house for ten years then all of a sudden have to move. Even home owners aren't secure unless the own the home outright.

OCSockOrphanage · 23/11/2017 20:59

Surely, it's about the property rather than the tenant? I used to let the flat I bought for myself (as a single working adult) and it would not have been suitable for a family, with or without pets.

ProperLavs · 23/11/2017 21:00

The huge irony about full to bursting shelters is they are not happy letting these animals go to people who rent, people who deign to work. They put up so many barriers that buying an animal from a breeder can sometimes be the only option.
If they made it easier for people to rehome the animals they wouldn't have such a problem.
I rent btw.

Clitoria · 23/11/2017 21:00

I let my former house out to a wonderful person and their dog, the dog is highly highly unlikely to cause any more damage than a child would, plus a home isn’t a home without a dog.
I know a few scumbags who lied and said their landlord wouldn’t allow dogs, when they’d actually let slip that they were treating their pet as a disposable consumer product because they’d had a kid and couldn’t be arsed taking basic care of their pet anymore.
