AIBU that people that rent shouldn't have pets

My friend is having to find another rented property but can't find anywhere that will accept pets, she's asked me to have her 2 dogs, I have 2 dogs already but they will have to be put down if I don't have them 😞 Why do people who rent have pets when this puts them in a difficult position. I can see a lot of dogs being put down as homes will be more difficult to find

I dont rent now, but thats more by luck than judgement, I am not rich by any stretch (quite the opposite in fact, I couldnt afford to rent without help). I have rented and had some absolutely shitty LL's, one who left me without running water because he refused to fix a leak, preferring to row with the waterboard about it and illegally evicted me when I made a complaint (only recently found out how illegal it was). That is fucking with someones life, refusing to indulge lifestyle choices is not.

OCSockOrphanage · 23/11/2017 21:46

No real problem with snakes. I rather like them, as long as they are not venormous and live in a tank.

mustbemad17 · 23/11/2017 21:46

Yes OC you then said that the amount of fat dogs within towns & cities is depressing. That is not necessarily down to the type of home they live in, hence my comment. Some of my dogs were unable to be let off lead to run, so open spaces were irrelevant.

🖕

kinkajoukid · 23/11/2017 21:47

That's good news OCSockOrpahanage :)

The only thing to consider is that many animals like to have a companion of their own species eg so some owners have pets in pairs for an animal welfare perspective. Especially if people work but want a cat, it is usually better to have 2 cats to keep each other company. If that is the owners reasoning then you would have even less to worry about as happy pets don't cause terrible damage or bark and whine etc and people who care about their pets welfare won't let the property become an awful mess.

mustbemad17 · 23/11/2017 21:48

I'd be okay with you then OC 😂 None venemous & in a viv haha. Birds can cause a lot of mess too 😏

Please please please get your friend to contact the breed association or Spaniel Aid if you are in the UK as they are likely to try anything to help.c

We own a lovely house but have to rent elsewhere due to DH work commitments. We often move around but always take DDog and have learnt that even if the rental ad says no pets they will accept a higher deposit and a clause in contract to have everything put right and carpets professionally cleaned. It’s worth speaking to the LLs about it.

Have also viewed a beautiful 5 bed home that didn’t want children Grin. Crazy

GlitterNails · 23/11/2017 21:50

It's a pretty shitty thing to say. I'm disabled and never likely to be lucky enough to be a home owner because of my health. Some days my cats keep me going - they have brought such joy in my life when I'm housebound for days on end.

Are you saying I should never have a pet all my life? More and more people and going to have to rent their whole lives. It would make more sense for property restrictions to change instead.

OCSockOrphanage · 23/11/2017 21:51

Venomous....

kinkajoukid · 23/11/2017 21:51

PyongyangKipperbang well you know how shit life can be then and we have been in similar situations to those you describe, but even then you would begrudge someone having a couple of lovely furry, funny cats for company? Knowing that those people want children but can't?

I don't understand how you can have been through so much yourself and not want better for other people than you have experienced yourself. I sure as hell want better for others than we have.

mustbemad17 · 23/11/2017 22:00

Glitter makes a fair point; owning a pet such as a cat or dog has been proven to reduce stress, anxiety, depression. Maybe we all need to get our dogs/cats qualified as service/assistance animals...LLs can't refuse then 😉

cathyclown · 23/11/2017 22:00

The provider of your home if renting makes the rules.

I understand it may not feel fair to renters, but that is the reality.

OCSockOrphanage · 23/11/2017 22:01

It's been an interesting discussion and thanks to all participants, but I'm off. I would like to leave you all with the thought that unless you can buy your home, then you are subject to the pet ownership conditions and restrictions that your LL imposes. They have spent the money to buy it; it's their asset, therefore they make the rules. You may not like them, but that is the way that the law works. The LL does not have to take any tenant; they have the option to wait for another they prefer.

PyongyangKipperbang · 23/11/2017 22:05

Are you saying I should never have a pet all my life?

No, merely pointing out that your choice to have a pet will limit your options so you have to decide which you would rather have, your pet or much easier house finding.

No LL will care about your personal situation, just you as a perceived risk, and if your pet increases that risk then they will turn you down. Its not personal and yet you keep painting it as such. They have no moral obligation to you or anyone else.

There is a lot wrong with the rental situation in this country and as more people become lifelong renters I agree that it needs addressing. There are asbolute scumbags out there preying on peoples desperation, taking high rents for disgusting places that are not fit for human habitation, illegal evictions etc. With that happening I do not think that the perceived "right" to keep a pet is in any way a priority.

idfwu · 23/11/2017 22:15

'Are you suggesting I should never have a pet?'
No but I am suggesting you grow out of that victim complex

cathyclown · 23/11/2017 22:41

Pets smell and moult lots of awful hairs everywhere. And they can be noisy if dogs, or supercilious without a care, that's cats, who also shit in neighbour's gardens and cause trouble.

I would not have any pets in my home, my decision, my home, hope that's ok.

And BTW I am normal.

I dislike visiting friends' houses who have pets. They know what I am like, but still cannot accept that those pets rule the roost and everyone should love them, but they smell and moult. Total YUK for me, but some owners do not see or smell that either.

HelenaDove · 23/11/2017 22:45

Its coming pretty close to banning disabled ppl PeiPei.

Miss Cherry Thanks

We had to have our beautiful tortie cat PTS last year. She was 15 and a half. Its an ache that never goes away.

Shiftymake · 23/11/2017 22:49

Have a friend that struggled for months to find a new place to live as they have a cat. Suggested to her to offer a pet deposit even if the rental said no pets as the worst they would get is no and the best they will get is yes. They did get a place very soon after that, in a good location and the house is lovely.

manicinsomniac · 23/11/2017 22:49

YABU to say renters shouldn't have pets.

But, just as I think renters have the right to have a pet if their LL agrees, I also think LLs have the right to set their own conditions on who and what lives in their home (within the law obviously - not saying they should be allowed to be racist/homophobic etc).

My cousin moved abroad for a couple of years and rented out her house as a no pets house. Returned to find there had been a cat in it. She is severely allergic to pet hair. Nothing to do with snobbishness. They had to completely refurnish (soft furnishings) and recarpet the house. Cost them an absolute fortune. I don't think allergies etc are that uncommon.

I also don't think it's discriminatory to put restrictions on who you will rent to. With housemate ads, you often see things like 'room is available to females only between 25 and 35 with professional jobs'. Nothing to do with being discriminatory, just housemates choosing to share with someone they think will suit them in interests and lifestyle. There's a whole website dedicated to renting/lodging/house sharing for Christians only - their choice not to consider those of other/no religion.

No pets is a pretty small thing compared to some of the massive restrictions put on human inhabitants.

Toddlerteaplease · 23/11/2017 22:54

I adopted two cats with the permission of my landlady. If I move I will not go anywhere that I can't take them with me.

PyongyangKipperbang · 23/11/2017 22:56

I think the OP would have had more sensible replies if the title was "renters shouldnt have pets and then be surprised/moan when they get turned down for properties" which is more what she is saying.

cathyclown · 23/11/2017 22:59

Toddler

What will you do if you cannot take your cats with you if you have to move.

Genuinely, will you sleep on the street.

OK.

SleepingStandingUp · 23/11/2017 23:05

Shouldn't have kids either.

If you can afford a mortgage then you should live a frugal life of loneliness until you have earned your deposit

Hmm
