I am almost speechless at how thoroghly vile the piece is....I really, really want there to be some kind of revelation of a secret joke or code or something, because the writing is in no way funny or satirical and I don;t want to see this kind of writing in a mainstream magazine or paper. It is a major step backwards in so many ways.

I'm sure the magazines love it because they can claim readership with both those that agree and are encouraged by the writing (taking it at it's horrendous face value), and also with those that 'know' that he is only joking and being oh so clever. (???)

Except that it is so unfunny, so unsatirical, so appalling, that all it does give voice and legitimacy to the most of awful views and opinions.

He's a toxic cocktail of self-loathing and hatred of others, particularly women. I don't have a high opinion of his wife either - particularly as she is defending him. She's an idiot.

The first time he talked about my wonderful tits I'd have told him to knock it on the head, when he talked about my struggle to lose weight after pregnancy I'd have divorced him. But when he talked about viewing our 3 year old daughter in a sexual manner on holiday or ridiculed our son for chubbiness, I'd have insisted on supervision-only access. He's done all this. People on MN talk a lot about lazy journalism in regard to the lifting of MN threads by MailOnline. But these confessional pieces endlessly exploiting your family for copy are much worse. Posters regularly call out writers such as Shona Sibary put they've always been silent on Giles Coren who does it again and again. This man is not a journalist. He just talks about restaurants and wanking.

Yet I've read nauseating threads on MN about how attractive and witty he is on that crap dressing up show with Sue Perkins and how much posters want to have his babies .

We get the very long overdue outing of some abusive fuckers in Hollywood and in power/society more generally and the glimpse of some potential justice, but simultaneously Trump gets elected, men can be women just because they feel like it and thus go wherever they please, and Coren can write vile pieces about fat people and say that he finds his daughter romantic and sexy... I am really, really concerned with where society is going..

His wife really really really loves him. She does give him a lot of shit but that's the sort of relationship they seem to have, fairly blunt and brutal and needling one minute, obsessed with each other the next.

I do wonder about the longevity of it though, he is away constantly with the BBC, she basically is a single parent more than half the time, and then he comes home and is Shouty Dad. It's hard to know if the bad days will some day outnumber the good. She's blocked him from watching her (quite amusing) Instagram Stories. I suspect he can be quite the prick even to her.

She definitely has a similar attitude towards journalism as him, basically a very cynical view that modern journalism has changed a lot and you have to be clickbaity to earn £££ in a hugely saturated market. And if you want to make a living from it you have to leave your ideals at the door.

She's a brilliant Mum though, I'll say that for her. Those kids will grow up very attached to her, regardless of how they grow up feeling about him. She's the centre of their world.

God no, I don't know them, I could be waaaaay off. Just impressions from her stories and I used to read her old blog Receipe Rifle which she wrote during some fairly dark times when her kids were tiny. I know way too much about these people, lol. They have absolutely zero concept of online privacy.

These people are not journalists. Just get that out of your head right now. They exploit their family and friends for cash. They are just posher than the 'sad face' people MN likes to mock. If it wasn't called journalism it would be called something else.

If you still have any doubt, substitute the words 'Shona Sibary' and 'Daily Mail' for 'Giles and Esther Coren' and 'The Times and Esquire.'

I've really disliked both Giles and Esther Coren since reading ages ago that they didn't have cake and pudding at their wedding, just cake, because nobody wants to eat both and get fat. How utterly joyless!

I never got the impression from her online presence that she was a great mother but I don't think anyone can make the judgement one way or another because we might see a lot but it's still just what they as a couple choose to present.

What we can probably, reasonably, say is that if you need to resort to Giles' vile tactics to retain your career in journalism then you probably don't deserve to be there in the first place.

I thought this would be a massive overreaction (tend not to feel outraged easily). The article is absolutely rotten. What a terrible thing to do. Even in families with robust teasing/pisstaking tendencies, there is such a thing as going too far. And in print, it's indefensible. I hope he feels absolutely ashamed of himself.

Oh and, the 'Penny Cruz' bit on his wife's Instagram tells me that she is probably as insufferable as Giles himself. I hope their journalism pays well- at least their kids will have material privileges to console them for the fact their parents are willing to sell them out. Ugh.

I was at uni with Esther, and had a few tutorials with her. She had zero self-awareness. (Tutor: Have you got a nice Christmas planned, Esther? Esther: No, not really. Just at home with my sisters and they're all vile. We're all just too similar." No irony intended.)

She wrote a column for the student rag, which was not bad for student journalism, but was again very unaware that her personal rich-London-girl was not the typical student experience.

I think, as an adult, she has a decent comedy voice, but lives a lifestyle so far removed from most people's reality that her comedy doesn't always hit the point, and comes across with that same lack of self-awareness. Her problems are so far removed from real problems that her satire misfires and makes her look a bit of a prat.
