Rumours have been circulating about this disgusting man and his sleazy casting couch for years... He has offered a half-hearted apology, but seems rather smug about the fact that his family are supporting him.

AIBU to think his wife is misguided? What sort of example is she setting to her daughter? After all, this isn't a one-off - it is a pattern of serious abuse of women over decades.

As a woman I do think it's reasonable to wonder why women support and stay with men like this - and to wish they wouldn't.

I hate seeing downtrodden-looking wives (like Rolf Harris's and Bill Cosby's) trailing along beside them even when it's absolutely beyond question that they're molesters or worse. Same with Melania Trump when the pussy-grabbing tape emerged.

It's not to say it's all the women's fault. It's just a reasonable question as to why they stay.

Loads of wives of rich men (and not so rich men) "live off their wealth" especially when they have DC. That doesn't mean they can't publicly stand up and show the world they won't condone abuse of other women, by dumping him. The richer the man the better the divorce payouts, so they're not going to starve.

I accept some may be in psychologically controlling relationships though.

We don't know anything about her. She'll have been gaslighted about the shameless actors throwing themselves at him for years. PP mentioned Bill Cosbys wife, Rolf Harris wife also got abuse in the press. Only these men are responsible for their behaviour. As for the partners - generally they know and have known for years. I think they're enablers as much as those around him (assistants and the like).

Some women do do it. I think Max Clifford's wife left him as soon as it was clear he was guilty. What struck me about that was how unusual it was though.

There's a difference between abuse of a wife who stands by her sexual harasser/child-molester/rapist man, and asking why she stays and wishing she didn't. It's fair to discuss why they stay - not OK to troll and attack them.

The wife isn't bad. She didn't do something bad, like he did. So why don't women in this situation go "eww, I can't be associated with this revolting specimen" and leave? Even when it's rape, child abuse, some of them stay. I find that astonishing. And yes it is an appalling example to your kids. There may be good reasons, but it's reasonable to want women to leave surely?

If your female friend's husband was revealed to be a sexual abuser wouldn't you find it kind of disappointing if she stood by him?

Thanks StigmaStyle - there does seem to be a tendency among some on MN to willfully misread AIBU threads. I never said the wife was 'bad' - I asked whether IWBU to consider her misguided in standing by such an abusive man. The fact that he has cited the support of his family in his quasi-apology suggests that it offers (in his mind, at least) some sort of validation. The subtext seems to be that whatever abuse he has committed can't be all that bad - because his wife and children are standing by him.

No doubt a procession of sycophants from the industry will soon be trotted out to provide further 'support' along these lines, a la Polanski. I think it's enabling and as a feminist it makes me bloody uncomfortable - that's what the thread is about. There's no point in creating a thread about whether or not HW is a revolting pig - that much is a given.

I'd always assumed wife was in a business arrangement. Marchesa was a very wobbly company before she married him, bearing in mind all they do is red carpet wear and some a lot of it isn't very nice. So no opportunities for mass market lines or shoes/handbags/fragrance which is usually where the real money is made - was hard to see where the profit was.

As soon as they got married it shored up a lot of guaranteed red carpet appearances in Marchesa by A-list stars, no more worst dressed list comments in the press and the company has gone from strength to strength.
