AIBU?

Harvey Weinstein

Rumours have been circulating about this disgusting man and his sleazy casting couch for years... He has offered a half-hearted apology, but seems rather smug about the fact that his family are supporting him.

AIBU to think his wife is misguided? What sort of example is she setting to her daughter? After all, this isn't a one-off - it is a pattern of serious abuse of women over decades.

And what about the silence from all the big stars that have worked with him
Thinking Nicole Kidman for one

No big star has come out and said anything against him despite saying they are supposed to be fighting violence against women etc after the big little let’s show

Not one big star has come out in support of Ashley judd

They always brush everything under the carpet in la la land

Hulder I have to disagree with you re Marchesa dresses - I think they are beautiful.

However Harvey Weinstein is far from beautiful.
His wife certainly is- he is punching way above there.
Why do woman like Hilary Clinton, Mary Archer etc stay???
Well done to those who called Harvey Weinstein out on his disgusting behaviour.

I'm disappointed in Meryl Street and some of the that big names. They have enough clout and money themselves not to have to worry about being blackballed for not speaking out. Yet they don't. Just like they didn't against Polanski or Mel Gibson or any of the other abusers of women they work with.

No it's not his wife who's at fault here but yes I agree that by standing by him it's sort of condoning his vile behaviour. And I wish other women in Hollywood had come out in support of Lesley Judd. Very disappointed and unsisterly imo. My ex commited fraud and prayed on the vulnerable in order to do so. When I came to.lught I divorced him. Someone who can do such a low down thing is not someone I can respect or want to spend my life with. His victims deserved better, I deserved better as did DD. What Weinstein has done is worse. I'm not sure how his wife can bear to be in his company, scumbag that he is.

I think that the wives who stick around, probably understand it as the husband has an addiction-I guess it is possible to keep loving someone in spite of despicable behavior. It os perfectly possible that Meryl and nicole are saying nothing because they have not had that experience with him. Weinstein is a power player in Hollywood- many will have kept quiet for the sake of their careers and that power may well have been part of the thrill for him. It is the Hollywood casting couch way and has been for years.

Slightly missing the point here, but why as people asking why big names like Meryl Streep and Nicole Kidman aren't speaking out? Why aren't people citing big names like Harrison Ford, Brad Pitt, Matt Damon etc? Surely these men know what's been going on just as well as any of the big name women (assuming they weren't themselves victims)?

Rumor has it that Gretchen Mol has been given a role in a TV show in exchange for keeping quiet.

There is a certain hypocrisy. Rose McGowan was given 100,000 dollars to keep quiet, but now she is angry that others aren't speaking out. They know that speaking out may cost them their careers.

I was always slightly mystified by Marchesa's success. I didn't realise she was married to Harvey Weinstein. It explains a lot. Apparently David Beckham also injects a lot of cash into Victoria's business.

Money, sex, drugs, power. I wonder if the world will ever really change.

It would be nice if men spoke out to

But the reason I mentioned Nicole Kidman is she has worked with Jim several tines but recently she has been speaking about supporting women against violence and other causes
And so have many of the other women

Not it might be they have not had any experience of this with Harvey but I find it difficult to believe not one of them has given his reputation and the open secret it is of his behaviour

I feel they have a responsibility to protect others not as famous as themselves who are open to this abuse

But they won’t as they value the $$ more
Just like they all wanted to work with polenski

Nicole Kidman was married to Tom Cruise not long after she broke through with her role in Dead Calm. That would have protected her from HW.

There is no way he would have targeted any A list women and so they arent going to be daft enough to slander/liable him.
As for his wife I assume it is a marriage of convenience.

It would be great if some of the big name male film stars spoke out.

They never do. Kate Winslet has worked with Polanski and now Woody Allen I thought she would've had more about her.

I couldn't agree with you more. If this was an open secret, as it seems to have been, then male stars must have known about it.
I don't see men speaking out as as a nice to have. I see it as a pretty minimum standard of decent behaviour.

Meryl's spoken out now that HW is safely sacked. What a bunch of hypocrites they all are.

Its an unwritten rule amongst actors etc that they never say bad about anyone they've worked with.Everyone is " a pleasure to work with,an absolute darling" no matter what......you slag someone off and you're blackballed, you dont work again.

Surprised George clooney hasn't come forward with a speech, article, press conference etc. He has an opinion on just about any sort of wrong. He sort of acts like the moral compass of Hollywood when he's not flogging coffee , watches and making unwatchable films.

Same. Just been reading about it and it's horrendous. Could it be because not everyone will know his name so don't grasp how big this is, but as soon as they hear his films they think "OMG, he's a massive high up Hollywood name, I know loads of his films."
I know I was like that until this morning when I read about him.

It IS outrageous that he has done this in plain sight for so long. He is a huge Hollywood name and imagine the rumour mill will have meant that most involved in the industry know about this abuse. Yet it's taken till now for someone to finally out him.

He's a bigshot producer with massive clout using the casting couch/exploiting assistants and now has the audacity to go after the publication in question backed by a lawyer who is supposedly pro women despite him pretty much admitting the allegations. Said lawyer is minimising talking about him being a "dinosaur" and times being different back then when allegations are still taking place into the 2000s.
Sadly he is not the only one. A certain director managed to shut down allegations of him preying on young actors. Hollywood was always thus. The next set of Oscar nominations will be interesting.
Given that Bill Cosby has a second trial, it will be interesting to see whether anyone will try and prosecute. Hope they do.

I've never watched the Oscars.
Can see the amount of clout he must hold though as his films are huge.
Have heard of the "casting couch" culture in Hollywood - hopefully this is the start of making it all come crashing down and flushing them out.

Do you mean the lawyer Lisa Bloom? As according to news reports today she's resigned from working with him.

What I never understand is how the wives cope with the public humiliation.

Regarding HW his wife Georgina was an actress & he wanted to get into fashion (Project Runway) so he apparently created Marchesa for her. Obviously his influence was massive in terms of getting it on actresses on the red carpet. Im pretty sure she went in with her eyes open.
