DH and I spent our wedding anniversary in a v expensive boutique hotel. I took the body lotion and soap home as I usually would do (sad, but I get v excited about these things!)Yesterday we received a letter from the hotel asking for us to send the 2 items back for the future enjoyment of guests!!! Talk about humiliation! Looking forward to MNetters views

Why in the name of fuck has this been revived after 15 years? Confused

When you go to post on a thread that's more than a year old (or it's been more than a year since it was posted on,) it says 'heads-up it's been more than a year since this was posted on. Why not start a new one???'

Why did you revive this 15 year old zombie thread @Moonopoly ? How utterly, utterly bizarre. Confused

Jedsnewstar · 03/11/2022 22:29

Blinking Zombies.

Fuck a duck.

I remember reading this original thread as I didn’t live far from the hotel at the time.

I was 27.

Now I am 42.

And I am spiralling into some sort of crisis about the fact that I’ve wasted 15 years of my life and life reading stuff that doesn’t matter on the internet.

Me too! My baby (& the reason I joined MN!) is now 15 & will be doing his GCSEs this year!

Tiani4 · 03/11/2022 22:33

Those complaining about another poster reviving a zombie thread, it's a glitch in MN app on some phones at the moment Which is showing old threads in recent thread newsfeeds
And it doesn't show the posts dates at all until pages down into it

Whoever received the post did so accidentally bc of this glitch

oosha · 03/11/2022 22:33

I have stayed in many hotels both at home and internationally over the years and I always take the toiletries; they come in handy when traveling and it’s nice to have different choices at home. I have never been asked to return any toiletries or charged for taking them; it’s absolutely disgusting that in this day and age and after a COVID pandemic that they are reusing toiletries for other guests…..yuck yuck yuck! It’s not even like they were a luxury brand is it.

No stuff from the mini bar and no towels either! I did assume we could take them and I actually felt quite good that I had left the bubble bath and shower gel!!

so it was a actual bar of soap they asked you to return! Gross. Make sure you stick some hairs on before you do.

In this case the thread was revived because the hotel is up for sale, not just randomly.

I stayed at Stratton's years ago, lovely hotel. I won't be staying again, weird to ask for them back. Just make a nominal charge - Gilchrist and Soames is not posh.at.all..

user1477249785 · 03/11/2022 22:40

Yup I also remember this thread from when it was first posted. Probably read it during a sleepless night with a baby who is now a teenager. I feel old.

Nymeria6 · 03/11/2022 22:42

Jesus Christ heard it all now. Wouldn't even bother replying.

Whydoiwearsomuchleopardprint · 03/11/2022 22:43

I always take the stuff u wouldn’t use again like the small bottles of shampoo and conditioner, my reasoning is once you have opened them they can’t be re used again so would be wasted.

ZOMBIE THREAD ALERT - 2007 I do feel old now

Bluekerfuffle · 03/11/2022 22:54

Stupid move on their part, losing potential return customers for a couple of bottles of bath things. I would find it off-putting having partially used products in the room anyway. The small products that are provided new for each set of guests is a much better idea.

Why resurrect this thread after all these years?

I don't get this either. What was the point? @mum2sons hasn't answered the question yet. I did ask her why she revived it. It's got fuck all to do with a 'glitch.' The thread would still have the message on, that it has not been posted on for over a year. So why drag it back up? Confused At least it's nearly full, so it will die of before morning (probably.)

Omg I read your comment thinking “yeh, that’s bad”. Then it dawned on me that I was also 27, therefore also now 42.

Shit.

Holy smokes,.just realised the time jump

Time flies when you're having fun (or wasting time reading MN Grin)

PineCone74 · 03/11/2022 23:16

I would not have taken full sized bottles. Bit surprised at how many people would! When you think about it, with those things costing around £20 each or more, if lots of people take them that quickly adds up to a lot ( even if they get a trade discount). Not sure why people feel they are entitled to them because of what they have already paid. Would people also take them from the public loos in the same hotel? The point about the small travel-sized ones is that they cannot be reused. Also, as someone else has said, imagine the waste if they threw out the contents of every large bottle after each guest. The bottles can be cleaned, the contents are not exactly contaminated, and I say this even as a germ phobe!

Sugarplumfairy65 · 03/11/2022 23:17

mum2sons · 05/04/2007 09:48

they were normal shop size not minitures. I guess I should turn myself in now!

Probably ones that they refill then. Its fine to take minatures, but everyone knows you dont take full size ones

DoYouKenMrsM · 03/11/2022 23:21

We seem to be getting a lot of zombie threads bumped at the moment, but 15 years seems particularly zombified. Why don't people just start their own, new, thread?

Twillow · 03/11/2022 23:27

Of course it's stealing! Honestly amazed you believe it is expected/normal behaviour for guests to remove full-size items. You really don't need a sign to tell you that, just as you don't need a sign telling you not to take the towels home with you.

been and done it. · 03/11/2022 23:29

mum2sons · 05/04/2007 14:14

The letter wasnt rude, quite polite but it does not matter how it was said, the fact that they have asked us to send their soap and body lotion back ASAP is acutely embaressing and has implied that I am a thief (which of course from their point of view I am).Not really very nice when we have spent around £500 at their hotel.

I will send it back. Do the "right" thing in my view. The sad thing is that they may have missed out on lots of business for a couple of bottles of soap. DH is the MD of a large marketing company, their loss.

You obviously have a very good income at your disposal which begs the question why you need to pinch grotty hotel toiletries.
