Dd 14, back to school and new rule females pupils are not to pull up tights in front of male teachers

Dd 14 had her first assembly of the year this morning, and head mistress / principle has a list of new rules, one including female students are banned from pulling up/ adjusting their 60 denier tights in front of male teachers as she feels this is inappropriate and it must be done in private in bathrooms. Surely this is crazy?

I agree it is discriminatory but only in that girls wear the tights, not boys.

It's such a tough thing to police. It really is. As a school you're damned if you do, and damned if you don't.

Do the girls have a trouser option? I'd have loved that at school but my all girls one went out of its way to have the most hideous uniform ever seen.

The world has gone totally bat shit crazy. I'm not sure if I'm more shocked by the ridiculous rule or the Victorian style attitudes displayed on this thread.

The OP has said that its an all girls school.

I also think with this that it seems to be a form of male scapegoating.

Its a very easy excuse that a head teacher can give and any comeback/complains are more often than not laid at the feet of the male teachers.

Maybe they just need to change the rule to no displaying underwear of any description (which is common decency not draconian)

I think they're definitely wrong saying that girls shouldn't pull tights up in front of male teachers.

Maybe just all teachers? I don't know....without knowing more of the background of why this has happened and the school it's all rather vague.

My school was an all girls school. Rather old fashioned and posh. We certainly weren't allowed to hitch tights up but that was a fair while ago!!!

Uniform is always a divisive issue.

Give it two weeks and there will be the daily mail 'sad face' stories of kids sent home with non correct uniforms.

I can usually see both points of view, except where parents ignore the school's uniform policies then complain.

I see the issues on both sides here. It's a very hard one to resolve as a headteacher

I remember a few girls adjusting their tights in interesting ways in front of a couple of attractive male teachers at my school.

I just mentioned this thread to DH - he taught in a secondary school. He is astonished that such a ridiculous rule was brought into place.

I've seen a male colleague accused of feeling up a girl. Three friends backed her up.

When he was a teacher DH was accused of beating up a male student.

What rule to we bring in to prevent that? Never allow a teacher to be within three feet of any student?

The girls in my school wear very short skirts and often pull tights up flashing most of their pants. There's nothing sexual about it purely a lack of self awareness, however I don't want to see it and nor can I imagine do any other staff male or female. I will happily say something like "good grief I just saw much more than I needed to then" and they will realise, blush and disappear quite quickly. I wouldn't want to say anything as a male member of staff and would be concerned how others interpreted the situation or relayed it. So I don't think reminding the girls about it was a bad idea but the singling out of male teachers was Hmm. Boys adjusting their bits is also another disgusting element of the job!

Why do everyone's tights fall down?! Confused

I wear tights pretty much every day of the year, winter or summer. They never fall down. They have elastic around the waist! Unless you're buying tights that are too small for you there shouldn't be a problem, surely?

I would no more consider the idea that my tights might fall down than I would my leggings/jogging bottoms/knickers/anything else that relies on elastic to hold it up. Seems very odd to me.

School was unreasonable to single it out so specifically but, if there really is an epidemic of girls wriggling around under their skirts to pull their tights up then that's a bit weird. If it's just smoothing out knee to ankle wrinkles I can't see an issue at all.

I work in an office full of men, I always remove myself if I need to adjust my tights. I tend not to if it's just me and the only other lass in the room and that's without me having to hitch up my skirt to do it.

Ask yourself this, if you were walking down a busy street and your teenage daughter hoicked up her tights, would you be happy with that? I wouldn't, if it were my girl.

the general rule is that you are never alone in a room with an individual pupil

Quite a few schools do this now...teenagers are full of hormones!! I have personally witnessed girls walking up stairs and bums hanging out of skirts (sometimes no tights and just a thong usually year 10 & 11s)...rolling them up from the waist to make them as short as possible (this is usually in all girls schools) and the worst a year 9 sat cross legged on the floor in front of a male trainee teacher who got very flustered and I had to remove and have a chat about appropriateness (virtually all the girls in this year group fancied this trainee harry styles lookalike) with safeguarding team. Male students are told not to walk around with hands down their pants or to be aware of adjusting themselves when in public! Unfortunately particularly anything can be construed as inappropriate particularly when it comes to male teachers and female students!! The head is most likely trying to eliminate the possibility of any accusations...it just takes that one little doubt (sat in on governors boards when accusations have been made) from a student or another member of staff and a career can be over in seconds particularly in teaching.

He wasn't alone with the student or in a room with him.

Again - what rule to we bring in to prevent that? Never allow a teacher to be within three feet of any student?

Again, I absolutely couldn't give the tiniest flyingest fuck if she did that.

I don't know why, but when I wear them they fall down constantly. So I no longer wear them.

People have various body shapes, tights come in s, m, l, xl not long thin leg, fat long leg, short thin leg and so forth.

Well I missed the etiquette memo

Well 99.9% of the femail population don't bare their undies in public whilst adjusting their tights - no memo necessary

Whenever such a specific, narrow rule is introduced its because that specific act has recently been an issue

If a child is wearing the correct uniform and there is something 'inappropriate' about adjusting it in front of a teacher there is something wrong with the uniform or there is something wrong with the teacher.

Why do everyone's tights fall down?!

Teenage girls are growing in different directions, they often end up with wrinkles around their ankles. I've only ever seen a teenage girl pull her tights up at the knee.
