Dd 14, back to school and new rule females pupils are not to pull up tights in front of male teachers

Dd 14 had her first assembly of the year this morning, and head mistress / principle has a list of new rules, one including female students are banned from pulling up/ adjusting their 60 denier tights in front of male teachers as she feels this is inappropriate and it must be done in private in bathrooms. Surely this is crazy?

I spend my winter working days hitching my tights up. It's a marginally better look than the crutch slipping between my ankles. I can't imagine it has ever led to improper thoughts.

We used to adjust the top of our tights by gripping them kind of through our skirts, therefore pulling both materials at the same time to put the thighs/crotch back in place. Certainly no nickers on show or skirts pulled up. Sounds a ridiculous sexist rule.

I actually can understand the school rule, just perhaps the wording could have been better.

I went to an all girls school and our skirts were supposed be knee length and everyone wore tights in winter. It was not unusual to see a girl pulling up her tights throughout the day. Some would just give them a quick pull up at the ankle or the knee if it was a Nora Batty situation, others would pull them up at the waistband if the crotch was getting a bit saggy ... some would start at the ankle, then the knee, then mid thigh then a quick tug at the waistband too.

The problem with the "full adjustment" is that invariably girls were hitching their skirts up to get a good grip on the tights, not so bad if it was just to adjust at the knee, but if they were adjusting the thigh area then they were hitching their skirts right up and it was not unusual to see a flash of another girl's underwear. Also the higher up the school you went the shorter the skirts seemed to get so hitching your skirt up to fix your tights in Yr 11 left a lot less to the imagination than a Yr7 doing it.

Perhaps your DD's school has had male teachers feeling uncomfortable at the possibility of being confronted with a "full adjustment" situation and being accused of inappropriate behaviour when he has done nothing wrong.

"OMG, did you see Mr Smith staring at Sarah's legs when she was sorting her tights out before Maths? Bet he was trying to see her underwear!" ... when in reality Mr Smith has turned a corner in the corridor to be confronted with a girl adjusting her tights with her skirt hitched up to mid thigh and he's looked in her direction. It is very easy for accusations to be made against teachers and it can be career threatening so I don't think that protecting teachers against a situation where they could be accused of inappropriate behaviour is a bad thing, it just should have been worded better.

Perhaps I also should of added this is a catholic school, as I live in Ireland. Not that should really matter, imo it's nothing to do with religion.

Zaphodsotherhead oh yes they checked. Not often. But there would be at least one random uniform check per term. My sister went loopy about one once and ended up with a doctor's note saying she didn't have to any more - that was around the beginning of the end. By the time I left it was getting slightly more sane.

This is exactly what's happens. I worked in a high school and the girls hitch their skirts up to adjust their tights in the corridors

I've seen my own DD do this (just the once mind)

They don't care - the head wants your daughter and the other girls to show some respect and common decency - what's wrong with that?

It's not a pleasant sight seeing a girl hoik up her tights. Happens often in my classes - some girls quite happily do this in front of a class kid teenage boys. I think some see it as similar to pulling up trousers!
Not sure about the message in assembly though.

I very rarely wear tights but when I do, I'd rather pull them up discreetly than walk round looking like I've shit myself. Adjusting them over your knees doesn't require a bloody bathroom visit.

I work in a girls school and I hate the tights adjusting. I'm a woman but you just don't see people adjust their tights in public in the same way girls do in girls schools. The skirts get hitched right up or even taken off. If people are imagining someone tugging at the thighs of their tights a bit because they've come a bit loose that's not what the HT is talking about. I tell girls in my classes to go sort them out in the toilets too. You'd never see people doing it in public which is what a school is essentially. Some of them seem to think that the whole school is one big girls' changing room. I don't see the problem.

For those who think it's OK, how would they like to see a female teacher pull up her tights in front of the class?

When I taught in a boys' school, quite few would, without thinking, adjust their bits in the classroom, or unselfconsciously sit their with their hand in the top of their trousers. I don't think for one minute it was done to offend, but I always called them on it: "Oi, you're not at home now." Done with a laugh they'd always look surprised, then sheepish, and comply.

The girls don't do it for attention and certainly not male teacher attention - it's not a sexual act - it's them feeling the need to pull up tights to knees and lift their skirt to adjust flashing their knickers in the process

Not much different to young ladies yelling 'Sir I need the toilet, I need to change my tampon'

They do it to deliberately embarrass the boys/teachers
