DH and I were discussing recent events, including the NK nuclear pissing contest & Charlottesville, on a long car journey this afternoon. He was telling me about a theory on interstellar contact with other advanced life forms which postulates that societies reach a certain level of maturity & advancement and then implode through in-fighting etc before they master advanced interstellar travel and communications. This theory says there have been/will be many advanced societies & lifeforms, but lasting long enough to be around at the same time & able to make contact is the challenge. DH then got gloomy and pondered whether the humans on Earth are approaching implosion/annihilation point. We decided to change the subject at this point...
