Ah thanks all - I had a bit of the shame this morning :)

That 45 swastika is good in an awful way :(

Where's Indiana Jones when you need him?

catgirl1976 · 15/08/2017 09:57

Good god. I've just seen the post about that poor woman's funeral. I am beyond disgusted. Her poor family.

PerkingFaintly · 15/08/2017 10:01

Oh god. The thought of violence starting at the funeral...

LuxembergerQueen92 · 15/08/2017 10:02

Banana - apologies - I retract my ginger statement - Orange one it is!
Catgirl - no need to apologise - you backed up your statements by facts
something Trump supporters seem unable to do.

This is a worrying article about the likelihood of America descending into civil war:

InigoTaran · 15/08/2017 10:13

Also have pp seen this anti fascist film currently doing the rounds on Twitter? It was made in 1943! Unbelievable that it's still needed today...

www.theguardian.com/us-news/2017/aug/14/donald-trump-kevin-plank-under-armour-quits-advisory-council-charlottesville

CEO of Intel has stepped down from the advisory council too.

It's good, except it leaves a vacuum for more nazi filled hate.

PerkingFaintly · 15/08/2017 10:29

Does the advisory panel actually do anything useful, or is it just a talking (or lobbying) shop?

I mean, I can see the value of an advisory panel to an administration that actually wants to run the country for the benefit of its citizens. But 45 doesn't listen to anything he doesn't want to hear anyway.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 15/08/2017 10:34

I guess it makes him feel as though he has a mandate.

lionheart · 15/08/2017 10:35

Turning a funeral into a hideous form of protest is a tactic borrowed from the Westboro Baptist Church isn't it?

I've wondered that too Lux but the tipping point has quite yet been reached for the GOP. Maybe it will not be one thing or one issue but a cumulative effect?

It probably won't involve a principle but money and self-interest

cynical

Away from the headlines, something important has happened in the last fews days: for the first time in a long time, Trump lost the narrative.

It's official. There has never been a POTUS as --vile-- unpopular as Trump. Sad! Trump cont.

Shinier coin sounds about right

Rhodiolia · 15/08/2017 10:57

It's not enough to be non-racist, we have to be anti-racist in light of these recent events. www.youtube.com/watch?v=jm5DWa2bpbs

PerkingFaintly · 15/08/2017 11:05

Oh dear. I'm not comfortable that Unite the Right marchers are being sacked from jobs, apparently just for being on the march.

I mean, racist and anti-semitic views are abhorrent and unless they were very good at keeping their shit out of the workplace (rare), then I wouldn't want to work with them. And such views even when kept quiet would tend to inhibit their ability to do a good job as a police officer or school teacher, say. But a cook in a fast food place? And there was earlier a similar story about a mechanic. I'm not sure what the justification is for firing them.

A Twitter campaign is outing people who marched with white nationalists in Charlottesville
www.washingtonpost.com/news/the-intersect/wp/2017/08/14/a-twitter-campaign-is-outing-people-who-marched-with-white-nationalists-in-charlottesville/?tid=pm_lifestyle_pop&utm_term=.4e45c7019683

Of course, if their behaviour in the workplace has been inappropriate towards colleagues, customers or employer, then that's different.

Protesters in Durham Topple a Confederate Monument

lessworriedaboutthecat · 15/08/2017 11:10

Shocking scenes. Actual Nazi's marching through the streets and knocking people down and killing people. Donald Trump should be ashamed of himself not condemning the actions of the Neo Nazi's in the strongest possible terms.

Robert E Lee was by all accounts a decent and principled man who deserved a better class of defender and would have been disgusted to see the sort of people causing mayhem in his name.

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Robert_E._Lee

The people who want to remove his statue are also trouble makers in my opinion. You shouldn't erase history and landmarks just because you disagree with them. Demanding the removal of the statue of a man who for good or ill most Virginians would consider to be a hero is unnecessarily provocative.

PerkingFaintly · 15/08/2017 11:12

Which is an interesting juxtaposition with the post above, about the difference between being non-racist, and being anti-racist.

The businesses are being anti-racist.

We've also seen this before, where it was supposed Communist Party members who were black-listed from jobs.

Mm, will have to think more about this.

PerkingFaintly · 15/08/2017 11:32

There's also a trap around false equivalence, isn't there?

Claiming rugby's better than football, constitutes having different views. "You don't have the same human rights as me," is not just having different views.

You have no need to feel ashamed or to apologise. Speaking for myself, I just didn't want to see you being drawn in to something which could have hurt you more than you already are.

You were great though. Smile

@ilangoldenberg
That senior White House staff are reading about Henry VIII to better understand their own work environment is bonkers

@mattyglesias
The "joke" is that the president's staff thinks he's dangerously unfit for office? Ha? I don't get it.

It's official. There has never been a POTUS as --vile-- unpopular as Trump. Sad! Trump cont.

My answers to your questions below

Is unpredictability a good thing for a leader? Yes definitely from the point of veiw that you don't want your opposition (NK) to know what you are planning.

So, for or against people having healthcare?
The existing insurance based system isn't working, I think it should be up to the individual states to decide

For or against respect for minorities and for women?
It's a free country every should live happily together

For or against respect for civil liberties?
It's a free country everyone should live happily together.

For or against gIving shelter to the persecuted?
People claiming refugee status should be held in a temporary location while their situation is assessed. Everyone one else should follow the visa process.

For or against world stability?
For, but violence does solve problems and something needs to happen to reduce the current world tensions.

For or against science?
I am a scientist and a Catholic.

PerkingFaintly · 15/08/2017 11:51

lessworried, I'm in favour of sometimes moving statues to museums and renaming buildings (and adding explanatory plaques).

It's important to understand history. But we can do that without celebrating or honouring (even passively, by leaving statues up), abhorrent acts. We could debate what constitutes an abhorrent act. But I'm good with stating that slavery is abhorrent, for example, and I agree with Bristol's renaming of Colston Hall: www.theguardian.com/world/2017/apr/29/renamed-and-shamed-taking-on-britains-slave-trade-past-from-colston-hall-to-penny-lane
