To call my son this?

DP and I are expecting our second child. We have a DD already and now expecting a son.

We have really struggled with names and I came up with Dorian which although I do like (and DP is set on) I'm not sure.

What are your thoughts?

Yup, nice enough. I don't have a strong reaction to it but that's no bad thing!

DotForShort · 18/07/2017 17:13

As long as your last name isn't Grey, I think it's fine. Smile

Pickleypickles · 18/07/2017 17:14

So long as your surname isn't gray!

TesticlesInTheBlender · 18/07/2017 17:14

It makes me think of the women next door from Birds of a Feather

Pickleypickles · 18/07/2017 17:14

X post Blush

DotForShort · 18/07/2017 17:14

Sorry, should be Gray.

DotForShort · 18/07/2017 17:15

Pickley, at least you spelled it right (unlike me)!

FlandersRocks · 18/07/2017 17:15

Me too.

Not a fan tbh - especially for a boy.

sonlypuppyfat · 18/07/2017 17:16

I knew a boy called Dorian once, he had a big droopy bottom lip, nice name though

Piratesandpants · 18/07/2017 17:16

All I can think of is Birds of a Feather.

DonaldStott · 18/07/2017 17:16

Dorian off birds of a feather

Then

Dorian Gray, which isn't exactly a pleasant story.

What are your associations with the name?

Floggingmolly · 18/07/2017 17:17

It sounds like the girl's name Doreen. Dull as ditchwater.

Saiman · 18/07/2017 17:17

Not a fan myself. Does remind me of birds or a feather.

But its not my child. So, dont have a strong opinion either way.

Its not awful. But then again, what i might think is awful, someone else may love.

DollyLlama · 18/07/2017 17:18

Birds of a feather was a little before my time, although I'm aware of it as I found a similar thread for the name on MN from about 8 years ago and wanted to see if opinion had changed (the last thread was mostly negative)

And my surname is nothing like Gray Smile

tangledup123 · 18/07/2017 17:19

Dorian just makes me think of Lesley Joseph in Birds Of A Feather (although I know that was spelt differently). I don't like it at all, for either gender.

Donald I am aware of the story of Dorian Gray, and to be honest I was searching literary names when I came across it.

Not everyone is aware of that story though so was more wondering if it stood out in its own right?

OP posts:
Sidge · 18/07/2017 17:21

It's OK. Just sounds a bit, well, a bit wet to be honest.

Sorry, I don't know why it gives me that impression, it just conjures up an image of a feeble, weak-chinned public school boy, all drippy and sappy, in an E.M Forster film.

Gileswithachainsaw · 18/07/2017 17:22

I like it.

Makes me think of Jd from scrubs

MsStricty · 18/07/2017 17:22

As long as you're okay with the name of a literary figure who made a pact with Satan, then I think it would be fine.

DollyLlama · 18/07/2017 17:23

Giles I'm a huge scrubs fan actually and his middle band would be Joseph so JD backwards

OP posts:
Smartiepants79 · 18/07/2017 17:25

I think of it as a female name. Prissy and old fashioned.
With so many other interesting boys names out there I can't think why you would to be honest.

DailyMailReadersAreThick · 18/07/2017 17:26

YABU to post this here when there's a whole board for people to ask random strangers on the internet what to call their kids.

teaandtoast · 18/07/2017 17:30

Aren't most people aware of Dorian Gray?

ifyoulikepinacolada · 18/07/2017 17:31

I don't mind the name, but come on, surely everyone is aware of Dorian Gray!
