To call my son this?

DP and I are expecting our second child. We have a DD already and now expecting a son.

We have really struggled with names and I came up with Dorian which although I do like (and DP is set on) I'm not sure.

What are your thoughts?

another no as it reminds me of bbirds of a feather and Dorian Gray.

RainbowPastel · 18/07/2017 23:05

There are so many much nicer names.

TeFiti · 19/07/2017 17:39

My son is called Dorian so clearly I'm biased, but I love it! Wink

For us the namesake is Dorian Pavus waves to other Dragon Age fans, also the robot in the to show Almost Human was called Dorian.

People have generally had very positive reactions (to our faces anyway) to his name, of people think of Birds of a Feather they don't tend to mention it, but it has started lots of conversations about Dorian Gray (both books and film) so make sure you're familiar enough with the story to make polite chit chat about it if you do go for it.

Please don't. Unless you are of the class where common names among his school chums will be Wilberforce or Ignatius and he will be known as Sir or Mr (surname) throughout most of his life.

I didn't research it or anything. I know a Doran in real life. I just assumed it is a slightly unusaul boys name.

People who start these threads asking 'is this name ok?' must think (or even know) it's a ridiculous name. Otherwise why even ask?

When I was thinking of names for my children, I wouldn't even have thought about asking people 'is this name ok?'

Firstly because it's got sod all to do with anyone else what I call my children, and secondly, because I knew they were perfectly good, decent names.

As I said, if you have to ask, then you know, on some level, that it's a ridiculous, stupid name, or a name that is going to result in your kids having a hard time all through their life, or getting mocked and bullied.

newnamechange84 · 19/07/2017 21:00

My grandfather was called Dorian. He's despised it so much he made everyone call him Mark 🙄

TartanDMs · 19/07/2017 21:02

I know a Dorian, he's very well respected in his profession. It is unusual but not awful.

SomewhatIdiosyncratic · 19/07/2017 21:20

I think it's fine and my taste is fairly conservative.

Birds of a Feather and Dorian Grey won't be on the radar of school children, and how many will know old ladies called Doreen which is probably more of a great grandparent age name than grandparent. If children are on a mission to tease another child, they will find a way anyway.

tamaramcnamara · 19/07/2017 21:20

Too much reminiscent of a certain novel by a certain 19th century gay writer.....Mind you, I like Oscar as a name, even though that may produce same effect. And Mr Wilde did produce some rather brilliant works of literature.

tamaramcnamara · 19/07/2017 21:22

Wasn't Ruth Joseph's character in BOAF spelt Dorein? or am I imagining things? Or was it Dorien???

DirigiblePlums · 19/07/2017 21:25

I think it's horrible, sorry

buttercup54321 · 19/07/2017 21:31

Birds of a feather. Dorian Gray. I really wouldn't. What about Darrion?

Wendalicious · 19/07/2017 22:43

Sorry I think it's hideous x

DaviesMum · 19/07/2017 22:46

It's up there with wanky names like Hugo, far too try-hard.

HidingUnderARock · 19/07/2017 22:52

I'm expecting Doreen to be a top 10 name sometime in the next 10-15 years :p

ConstanceCraving · 19/07/2017 22:53

You're on fire Daviesmum tonight.

barbarann · 19/07/2017 22:54

I know a 4yo Dorian nn Dory.

It's not the top of my list!

AhhhhThatsBass · 19/07/2017 22:55

My old boss was called Dorian and a fine specimen of a man if ever I saw one. Surname was not Gray luckily.

MoonPower · 19/07/2017 22:59

It's terrible. Sorry but you did ask.

FluffyPineapple · 19/07/2017 23:10

WOW! There are posters stating they know males with the name Dorian. I know 3 female Dorians. Personally I wouldn't name a girl or boy "Dorian" but each to their own...

apostropheuse · 19/07/2017 23:11

I think it's really dire.

BeeThirtythree · 19/07/2017 23:37

Dorian is the name of a good friend of mine, I am not sure if it is a common Romanian name, as he is Romanian.

It does remind some of Dorian from Birds of a feather but I think as he grows up that will be less remembered.

It is lovely that you are looking at literary names...maybe not Edgar! Hehe
DJ, Dory... that sounds cute as nicknames?

What other names have you shortlisted? Are you going for a book/character/word/place that is meaningful to you?

TheSeaTheSkyTheSeaTheSkyyyyyy · 20/07/2017 08:09

WOW! There are posters stating they know males with the name Dorian. I know 3 female Dorians. Personally I wouldn't name a girl or boy "Dorian" but each to their own...

According to ONS statistics, there have been 510-512 boys named Dorian in the last twenty years, and there is no record of any girls being named Dorian in the same time period.

It's also on a pretty sharp increase for boys (from 6-12 per year in the late 90s/early 00s to around 60 per year over the last few years) so I'd expect to see more and more of them in the future.

Khara · 20/07/2017 18:29

Also makes me think of a character from a video game (dragon age inquisition). Mind you, he's a great character.
