To call my son this?

DP and I are expecting our second child. We have a DD already and now expecting a son.

We have really struggled with names and I came up with Dorian which although I do like (and DP is set on) I'm not sure.

What are your thoughts?

OP posts:
GreeboIsACutePussPuss · 18/07/2017 18:20

I think its a brilliant name.

billabye · 18/07/2017 18:21

Reminds me of durian fruit which supposedly smells and tastes like sewage. So it's a no from me!

TheSeaTheSkyTheSeaTheSkyyyyyy · 18/07/2017 18:25

I like it a lot, OP. It was on our list (although we don't live in the UK so people may have been less judgey about it where we are).

Still think it's cool though.

TheSeaTheSkyTheSeaTheSkyyyyyy · 18/07/2017 18:28

Also remember that the name is not popular, so most people on here are going to say they don't like it. (obviously!) If most people liked it, it would be higher up the name charts because more people would be using it.

That is surely the case for all names lower down the charts... which is why asking for opinions is kind of pointless I guess.

AmysTiara · 18/07/2017 18:29

It sounds a bit feeble to me. Not a strong name but it's only my opinion. Go for it if you love the name.

ToeKneeChestNut · 18/07/2017 18:32

Yuck! Dorian Gray.

I'd be surprised if people in the UK didn't immediately think Dorian Gray or Lesley Joseph's character. Either way, it isn't good!

glitterglitters · 18/07/2017 18:32

I used to know a Dorian when I was a teenager. Hands down coolest bloke I ever met at the time. He was a guitarist in a band as well.

Footle · 18/07/2017 18:34

Durian is the extremely smelly fruit.

Yogagirl123 · 18/07/2017 18:35

Birds of a feather for me too sadly, generational thing I expect! Lol. Your choice OP, you will never have everyone like any name you choose.

darbyshaw · 18/07/2017 18:35

I'm sorry, I think it's a terrible name.

Groupie123 · 18/07/2017 18:36

A friend's son is called Dorian - they call him finding dory at school which is horrible.

Chapterandverse · 18/07/2017 18:36

If you like Dorian Joseph can you call him DJ?

Initial names are common here. We have DJ, JP, PJ & JD in our expanded friends group.

Notknownatthisaddress · 18/07/2017 18:40

@somethingonce

DeLorean LOL. Grin Love it.

Yeah he will get called Doreen at school.

Dorian as a middle name is OK I guess. But that's it.

I know a man called Miriam - he is 50-ish now. It's a biblical name I believe. From about the age of 7, he insisted on being called John which is his middle name. He loathes his name (Miriam) with a passion.

Think very seriously about calling a boy Dorian.

BusterGonad · 18/07/2017 18:40

I don't like it. It has no redeeming features at all! Sorry!

Guepe · 18/07/2017 18:41

I like it.

BathshebaKnickerStickers · 18/07/2017 18:42

My friends have a Dorian - it really suits him. It means SonOf The Ocean - dad is an oceanographer and they own yachts and go on round the world trips

ellestyle · 18/07/2017 18:42

Very pretentious.

TheSeaTheSkyTheSeaTheSkyyyyyy · 18/07/2017 18:46

Not really the same thing. At all. Miriam is an established girl's name (yes, even in the bible) and Dorian is an established boy's name.

VerbenaGirl · 18/07/2017 18:54

Reminded me of Birds of a Feather too! And I haven't seen it for about 20 years!!

Ontopofthesunset · 18/07/2017 18:55

Is Dorian really a girls' name? I know it was used in Birds of a Feather, but isn't it a boys' name? I knew a Dorian at primary school and of course Dorian Grey is a well known bearer of the name. I think it's quite attractive really. There's nothing about the sound that's unpleasant. In the same sort of vein as Damian and Fabian.

Sushi123 · 18/07/2017 18:57

It's awful. Keep thinking.

ShelaghTurner · 18/07/2017 18:59

I think of Dorien from Birds, but I’m a big fan of the show so am biased. But, I think it’s a great name for a boy and no one their age is going to know who the hell Dorien was!

TaliZorahVasNormandy · 18/07/2017 19:01

I thought of Dorian Pavus from Dragon Age Inquisition and I loved that character.

AndromedaPerseus · 18/07/2017 19:02

Dorian is fine much better than the Archie's, Ollies, Stanleys which are old men's names. I always think Dorians are tall artistic sensitive types

Notknownatthisaddress · 18/07/2017 19:04

@TheSeaTheSkyTheSeaTheSkyyyyyy

Not really the same thing. At all. Miriam is an established girl's name (yes, even in the bible) and Dorian is an established boy's name.

It may be an 'established boy's name,' but one of the most famous Dorians of recent times is a woman! Plus it sounds like Doreen, so as a previous poster said, the poor lad will be called Doreen! Confused Many posters are advising the poster against it. This should tell the OP something. People WILL think of Dorian from Birds of a feather - OR Dorian Gray who was a horrible person.

As I said, it's more likely people will think of an old woman when they hear the name Dorian. Frankly, I don't know a SINGLE Dorian who is male. Not one.

I am sure you know loads though. 🙄
