To call my son this?

DP and I are expecting our second child. We have a DD already and now expecting a son.

We have really struggled with names and I came up with Dorian which although I do like (and DP is set on) I'm not sure.

What are your thoughts?

The Picture of Dorian Gray is one of my favourite books of all time and even despite the grisly ending I still LOVE the name Grin If you really like it OP then do it!

YouTheCat · 18/07/2017 17:33

I think it's a lovely name.

CruCru · 18/07/2017 17:34

I know a (hulking, great) Dorian. His name gets shortened to Doz or Dozzer. Would that bother you?

everythingissoblinkinrosie · 18/07/2017 17:35

I knew a Dorian (male). Must be in his late 40s now. Nice enough name.

NotYoda · 18/07/2017 17:37

I think it's leaning a little bit towards pretentiousness

kali110 · 18/07/2017 17:37

Love it

NotYoda · 18/07/2017 17:37

And yes, head over to Baby Names. I love it there

RiverTam · 18/07/2017 17:39

I think a lot of people are aware of Dorian Gray, given that's its a classic by the really-very-well-known Oscar Wilde. So I wiukfnt hold out any hopes that most people won't make that connection.

I quite like it as a name, but that's a very negative connection to have.

WaxOnFeckOff · 18/07/2017 17:40

I know an adult male one - i think it's fine. It's not particularly my taste (a bit posh) but I wouldn't be aghast at a baby Dorian.

potatoscowls · 18/07/2017 17:41

Love it. Am an oscar wilde fan though.

DollyLlama · 18/07/2017 17:41

Sorry for posting in AIBU rather than baby names, I was looking for stronger reactions rather than the usual "oh that's nice"

This is swaying me further towards no to be fair!

OP posts:
BendydickCuminsnatch · 18/07/2017 17:42

I knew one, went by Dory.

ConstanceCraving · 18/07/2017 17:43

Sorry OP but it's dreadful. There's millions of boys names out there to choose from!

archersfan3 · 18/07/2017 17:45

This is ringing a bell that there is a very smelly fruit called a Dorian which is banned on the underground in Singapore because it smells so bad (apparently tastes nice though!)? Might be worth checking...

archersfan3 · 18/07/2017 17:46

PS even if the above turns out to be my bad memory I'm personally not keen on it but then our tastes run more to mainstream names rather than unusual ones.

ellestyle · 18/07/2017 17:46

Absolutely awful, sorry. I think he'd be resentful of that name all his life. It doesn't take much for other kids to pick on someone, the school bullies would be calling him Doreen in no time.

MunchMunch · 18/07/2017 17:46

I don't like it but it's not my child and if you both like it then my opinion doesn't count

HolidayTimeAgain · 18/07/2017 17:46

I immediately thought of birds of a feather, quickly followed by Dorian Grey!!!

WorraLiberty · 18/07/2017 17:46

Oh no, I don't like it for a boy or a girl.

MrsPicklesonSmythe · 18/07/2017 17:48

Dorian Gray is a literary classic and it's been made into a film do I don't think that link will ever go away.
I also think of Dorian Green from Birds of a Feather and I wouldn't want people thinking of Lesley Joseph when I said my sons name personally.

Have to say even without those links it isn't the strongest name for a boy.

AlistairSim · 18/07/2017 17:48

I really like it, it reminds me of a character from a Nalini Singh book.

Only1scoop · 18/07/2017 17:49

Green Birds of a Feather and Gray.
Don't like it

HidingUnderARock · 18/07/2017 17:52

Its a nice name and it shortens to a nice name. Its unusual enough without risking the anti yoonique (sp?) lashback.

I would. I can't imagine many people in the playground will associate it with Birds of a Feather.

Walkingtowork · 18/07/2017 17:54

Not keen. He might be known as "Door". Love the book though, read it if you haven't!

Starlight2345 · 18/07/2017 17:54

Birds of a feather name for me too.
