To call my son this?

DP and I are expecting our second child. We have a DD already and now expecting a son.

We have really struggled with names and I came up with Dorian which although I do like (and DP is set on) I'm not sure.

What are your thoughts?

Thank you Footle for clearing up the fruit aspect - I'm glad I wasn't totally imagining it!

HidingUnderARock · 18/07/2017 19:10

I know a man called Miriam - he is 50-ish now. It's a biblical name I believe. From about the age of 7, he insisted on being called John which is his middle name. He loathes his name (Miriam) with a passion.

Is his surname Wayne?

Ontopofthesunset · 18/07/2017 19:19

I've never met a woman called Dorian. I assumed it was specially adopted for the TV series. I don't see why people are so against it. I mean, loads of people currently seem to love the Noah which sounds like a girls' name (Noa) and ends in an 'a' which is traditionally female. Why is that nice but Dorian isn't?

Leeds2 · 18/07/2017 19:24

It wouldn't be my first choice.

What other names are you considering?

TheSeaTheSkyTheSeaTheSkyyyyyy · 18/07/2017 19:41

I am sure you know loads though

I don't know any of either sex. That is true of many names though. Just because one famous female character is called it does not make it a girl's name. It is unequivocally a male name. Not to mention the fact that The Picture of Dorian Gray is FAR more famous than Birds of a Feather.

I'm not bothered about the popularity argument, as I said earlier, it's obviously not popular, because it's something like 621st in the charts. My issue was only with the comparison to a person called Miriam/people thinking it's a girl's name.

HidingUnderARock · 18/07/2017 20:00

Surely the one in BoaF is intended as a take off anyway, hence the strange pronunciation etc. The fact its always been a boys name may well have been one of the reasons that it was chosen for a female character to be poked fun at.
I have never watched it btw.

Footle · 18/07/2017 20:04

Thanks archersfan3. I have a head full of random information and it's nice when it comes in useful.

Btw I had two great-great ( or something ) uncles called Julian and Dorian Pygge. I can see this isn't very useful info.

Awwlookatmybabyspider · 18/07/2017 20:08

Its horrible. One of the worse names ever.

Sorry, but you did ask

Hotpinkangel19 · 18/07/2017 20:15

No sorry, another birds of a feather connection here... plus it's really not nice imo .

Kerberos · 18/07/2017 20:17

No. Just no.

And once more no again.

Ontopofthesunset · 18/07/2017 20:52

But why is it horrible? What makes it objectively horrible? I know there isn't really such a thing as objectivity in choosing a name, but why is Dorian horrible? Why are, say, Finley and Aiden top 20 names? Why are they apparently acceptable but Dorian isn't? Fin - ooh, he'll get teased about being a fish. Aiden - sounds like AIDS.

Dorian's like Julian and Lucian and Christian and Damian and Caspian and Cillian and various other male names ending in -ian. It's clearly a long established boys' name.

MidsummerMoo · 18/07/2017 21:05

I think of Birds of a Feather AND Dorian Gray, neither of which are positive associations for a young boy.

Those aside, I don't particularly like the name; think it's a bit clunky-sounding. Where I live it would stand out as very unusual.

BewareOfDragons · 18/07/2017 21:16

It sounds like a girl's name to me because I have known girls called Dori.

hana32 · 18/07/2017 21:16

LOVE Dorian and would definitely consider it for a future DS too!

KayTree87 · 18/07/2017 21:18

Reminds me of birds of a feather too, sorry. What about Doran? Similar and it's a boys name.

Jupitar · 18/07/2017 21:19

I'd assume it'll get shortened to Dory and then Nemo.

I'd keep looking at more names.

It's amazing how much time we spend worrying about what we'll call our kids and then once they're born and named never think about it again.

HidingUnderARock · 18/07/2017 21:28

What about Doran? Similar and it's a boys name.
Is it? I only know it as a surname, although wikipedia also list 4 place names.
Google comes up with a (male) GoT character and a female law student.

ReesesPeanutButterCups · 18/07/2017 21:30

I think JD from scrubs, Dorian from birds of a feather and the oscar Wilde play. Dorian grey was made into a film about 7 or 8 years ago if I recall so may be on more radars than you think.

Velvian · 18/07/2017 21:31

It makes me think of Dorian Grey and he's not a very positive character, which would put me off. Florian?

Andcake · 18/07/2017 21:35

I like it... Did bring to mind grey and birds of a feather but didn't put me off it...a nice unique but real boys name!

SuperBeagle · 18/07/2017 21:52

Dorian Gray is very well known.

It was a prescribed text in high school (Australia).

wapphighwood · 18/07/2017 21:55

There was one in our year at school, he got a LOT of piss take for his name

TheHeraldOfAndraste · 18/07/2017 22:01

I like it but I'm a nerd and love the Dragon Age character.

TruJay · 18/07/2017 22:58

I love the name Dorian. One of my bro's closest friends is called Dorian and boy is he hot Grin

MumsOnCrack · 18/07/2017 22:59

I'd go with Joseph and give him that as a middle name...that's bad enough IMO
